Finally upgraded from my Blackberry Curve to an iPhone ("blemished" 3GS 16gig from the AT&T store for $50, actually perfect shape).

I'd appreciate some suggestions for worthy apps to download from fellow users.

I recently made a list of apps for a freind of mine who got an iPhone, so here's that list :

Anythign that says "lite" or "Free" is probably a limited free version fo an otherwise paid app. A lot of times there's no reason to upgrade, a lot of times there are. Up to you.

    FREE :
    MUSIC :
Remote - control your home iTunes library with the iPhone.
Shazam - hold it up to a song playing at a bar, etc and it will tell you what the song is.
    Pandora - Pandora
TuneWiki - tells you info about songs, and also shows the lyrics karaoke style to most songs so you can sing along.
AOL Radio - streaming radio app
Ocarina - useless but cool app that turns your iphone into an instrument.

    OTHER :
SayCheeze - camera replacement with some nice features (auto-upload to facebook, tap anywhere to take instead of having to find the stupid shutter button, etc)
Accuweather - way better than the stock weather app. There's a lot of choices in the weather category, YMMV.
Grocery IQ - Grocery List App
Sportacular - the best free Sports App I've found
Lose It! - calorie counting / exercise app
TrailGuru - log your hikes / walks / bikes / runs
    Twitter
    Facebook
    FourSquare
    LinkedIn
    Skype
Bump - bump iphones iwth people to share contact info. Neat idea, never used it.
TripIt - a neat travel organizer - forward your travel itineraries to this special email addresses and it organizes your ****
    Kayak - app for kayak.com
WikiMe - finds wikipedia entries about things nearby
    Google Earth
MapQuest 4 Mobile - turn by turn directions (the built-in maps app won't do them)
    PayPal
    Amazon.com
    eBay
    Craigslist
Comcast - if you have a DVR you can schedule recordings via the app; if you have their home phone service you can get your voice mails. Pretty neat
myWireless - AT&T's app for managing your bill
DropBox - share files between computers and your iphone w/out synching
Stanley Level - use your iPhone as a level

    FOOD:
    Yelp
    OpenTable
    UrbanSpoon
    MenuPages

    TV & Movies :
    IMDb
    Netflix
    Hulu Plus
    Redbox
    Flixster

    GAMES :
    Qrank - Daily trivia game
Paper Toss - the most boring idea ever made into a fun game.
Megatough Photo Hunt - Like the games you play at bars where you find the differences between two pics
Labyrinth Lite Edition - A good game to show off the accelerometer of the iPhone
iAqua Lite - Kind of a Dr. Mario type game.
JellyCar - a fun game where you drive this jelly car around through puzzles. The physics and sound effects make this game worth it.HomeRun Battle 3D Free - Um, hit home runs.
Sneezies Lite - Seems silly, but kind of addicting in a mindless way
    Arcade Bowling Lite - Skee-ball.
    Rolando Lite
Pipe Mania Lite - A classic puzzle game where you have to fit pipes together
Geared Free - Puzzle game where you fit gears together
Up There Lite - lean the iphone back and forth to guide a baloon.
Tap Tap Revenge 3 - a lamer guitar hero
    Sway Lite
Creeps! Zero - a castle protect game
    reMovem Free
    Moron Test

    PAID :
    MUSIC :
FluxTunes ($.99) - an iPod app replacement that lets you use gestures to control music. Like, swipe left anywhere on the screen to skip to the next song, tap to pause, etc. Way better than the standard iPod app which is near impossible to use while driving.
BeeJiveIM ($9.99) - an IM client. It's something outrageous like 10 dollars, but I tried the free options (Fring being the most popular) and just couldn't deal.

    OTHER:
Gas Cubby ($4.99) - track your fuel / maintenance.
Star Walk ($2.99) - stargazing app that actually shows you what you're looking at.

    GAMES :
Words with Friends ($.99) - Scrabble game.
Cut the Rope ($.99) - fun little physics type game
Trainyard ($.99) - Puzzle game. Addicting
Chuzzle - like a Dr. Mario
Fruit Ninja ($.99) - random timewaster where you cut some fruit as it flies through the air.
    Quordy ($2.99) - Basically Boggle.
Angry Birds ($.99) - Best 99 cents you'll ever spend
Flight Control ($.99) - odd little game where you land planes.
Movie Challenge ($1.99) - Movie trivia game.
Solebon ($1.99) - Every solitaire game imaginable
Peggle ($2.99) - Kind like plinko... but better. I'm so addicted to this game.
Boxed In / Boxed In 2 ($.99 each) - neat little puzzle games
Enigmo ($2.99) - addicting / frustrating puzzle game.
Megatough Monkey Bash ($.99) - another bar game adapted to the iphone.
    Drop7 ($2.99) - Kind of a Dr. Mario.
Spin Super Shape Puzzle ($.99) - another puzzle game
    Flick Bowling ($2.99) - bowling
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Also, be sure to take a look at the 150,000 **** apps, joke, fluff apps...since it looks like bobman managed to make a list of all the actually useful apps there.

Also, I have to emphasize the Angry Birds suggestion. Over 100 levels (I believe) and hours of re playability make that game a must have.

My first suggestion would be to jailbreak it.

I don't use many applications, but a decibel meter is good to have and same with a turn by turn nav system that doesn't require service to use (I use navigon).. I usually have some sort of remote control and VNC viewer.

I suggest just going to the app store when your laying in bed, on the toilet , chilling listening to music , sitting just about anywhere like the doctors office or waiting for your food.

Apps are fun and some are very very good depending on how you plan on using your Iphone.
I personally use my Iphone for everything like daily planner , notes , GPS , TEXT , online tech info when I'm on a job site , the list is endless I use it to as a alarm clock which is fantastic I can wake up to anything I want , it's awesome.
Once you own a Iphone , you will find so many uses other then just calling someone and surfing the net.
    I don't know what I did when I didn't have one.

My personal quest is to save to world of bad audio, one thread at a time.

    Another vote for Angry Birds.
I also love the Remote app, in combination with the $10 MonkeyTunes. It serves as a remote control for MediaMonkey. I can cue up FLAC tunes through the stereo via iPod Touch.

    Others:
    Netflix
    DirecTV
    Logitech TouchMouse
    UnblockMe
    Rafter
    TanZen
