Anyone make ice cream?

I just started fooling around with a cheap ice cream maker and my first batch was "interesting". Since I'm kind of hooked, I wonder if anyone here has any tricks up their sleeve or any suggestions? It's an el cheapo outdoor model - nothing you would find in Kitchen Stadium. So I'm probably already at a disadvantage there.
Would prefer some recipes for a solid base - along with suggestions for preparation. Anything that comes to mind really.

I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore

A tblsp of vodka in a batch it lowers the freezing point just a bit making the icecream more smooth with out changing the flavor.
Also find a recipe calling for using a real vanilla bean (they can be kinda spendy though but its worth it) instead of vanilla extract in the base it adds lots of flavor. -
Cool. If anything, my last batch was too smooth - having an almost frozen whip cream consistency. Used half-half and heavy cream (no milk), as the recipe was for a sweet cream base. I seem to remember home-made ice cream having a wildly different texture. Almost more "icy" and certainly more tasty.I never had it like this where I grew up. I never made it before but I have an idea. Add Rum and you can do a Rum and Coke float! I had one of those a few years ago and it was pretty good.Sunfire TGP, Sunfire Cinema Grand, Sunfire 300~2 (2), Sunfire True Sub (2),Carver ALS Platinum, Carver AL III, TFM-55, C-19, C-9, TX-8, SDA-490t, SDA-390t

I tried making home-made once--it was soupy, I couldn't get it to freeze enough. When I was a kid, our neighbors hand the old hand crank jobbie, and theirs always turned out GOOD.Source: Bluesound Node 2i - Preamp/DAC: Benchmark DAC2 DX - Amp: Parasound Halo A21 - Speakers: MartinLogan Motion 60XTi - Shop Rig: Yamaha A-S501 Integrated - Shop Spkrs: Elac Debut 2.0 B5.2

Used to make it all time until the big salmonella scare about using raw eggs.:frown: We made some super-concentrated espresso and added it to the vanilla recipe that was in the Rival owners manual/recipe booklet, turned out better than B&J or Haggen Dazs, way better !
