So my old pal Don Milks called me up the other day. You remember him. Met him in the late 80's, when he was the senior service tech at Adcom. Sold me the brand new Adcom GFA-555 for $200 back then (I hated it and sold it at no profit). Then he moved to Altec Lansing for awhile. Now he's a heavyweight at Onkyo. Been there for about three years. Tells me about an employee sale at Onk, and sends me the list to choose from. Do I want a home theater receiver? Hell no! Do I want to put one in Stephie's room, and replace her Dynaco integrated surround amp? Hell YES! So I am getting a brand new Onkyo TX-SR700 delivered to my door for......$50. Not a bad price for an $800 list price receiver.
My real old pal, Bobby "The Package" Poole, now HE is a home theater kind of guy. So he picked out the top of the line Integra 7.1 receiver, the DTR-9.1SLS. List price either $3,200 or $3,600.
Employee sale delivered to your door price.....$200.
Thought I'd like to share my good fortune (and Bob's) w/you.
See ya!

That said, the budget for spiced rum should have ZERO issues I take it?
Gotta love Onkyo on the cheap, why they get a bad rap sometimes, I'll never know. Clean current, and heavy. My dad always said, if it's heavy, don't eff with it, it's expensive.
All the HT junkies usually dismiss my 'dig ready' oink, due to age alone, yet not ONE **** who has actually heard it has nothing but compliments to throw out.
I wouldn't be afraid to bring her (an oink) home to meet mom, thats for sure.
Cheers,

George. In my world you are one of those high places.:), and you're as close to a friend as I get:( .
Oink or not. This is a prime example of getting a "hook-up vs. mark-up".
Unfortunately value and price are usually independant conceptions. Someday more people will realize this and rethink things accordingly.Make it Funky! -
Gidrah,
You da man.
Mantis,
If you're Dan from long ago, I think I liked you a lot better when you didn't think you knew so much. I think we both know that these items were sold well below what it cost to manufacture them. If you didn't know it before, you know it now.

Damn... Bob's lucky to have a friend like you. Got to compliment you on your restraint. I think I'd be tempted to order one of each.

I bought an Onkyo receiver new in 1988 on the cheap as an employee of Best Buy. I think Onkyo was their premium brand, if I remember correctly.
We bought an identical receiver used in about 1993. One of them died last year, the other is still going strong.
I would find myself hesitant to buy a new Onkyo receiver, however. I've read JUST ENOUGH on different forums that would lead me to think Onk had/has some quality issues. A couple of the consistent problems with particular components are very well documented. It would scare me to buy into that.
I think it is great to have an 'insider' for purchases. When I worked for Chrysler Airborne Systems, I could get cars for 3% LESS than dealers paid (of course, couldn't bring myself to buy a Chrysler).
Mr. Grand didn't offer up to get anyone else a deal, so I guess he was just sharing his good fortune.. although, in general Mr. Grand seems more grumpy than usual lately, so maybe that FU was on the end. Doesn't matter to me.. I couldn't buy anything right now anyway.
However, I would extend the information to all here that I am privy to the location of a Florsheim Factory Outlet and there is also a Russell Stover outlet nearby.. couple of hours drive, but I think I can get you the $10 Assortment Box for like $7. -
I've been flying/working with Bobby Boris Poole since 1978, and I consider myself fortunate to have a friend like HIM. Plus, he's the one who is really into home theater, not me. Let's face it, the one I'm buying is going into a 13 yr old girls bedroom. About 8 yrs ago, Bob asked me to try and sell the Bose 901's he purchased brand new, on the island of Okinawa, in 1968. Originals, not the Series II or anything. One of the great pleasures of my life, was to sell them for more than he paid for them, and hand him the cash. He listened to those things for over a quarter century, for free. Which is ABOUT what someone should pay to listen to those. On second thought, one should be PAID to listen to them. In any event, Bob has one pair of my RTA 11t's, and his about to get married son Brad, has the other pair. Once he got introed to decent sound, Bob took off like an audio comet.
Me owning a $3,500 list home theater receiver, is like a 10 yr old kid owning a Ferrari. It's not going to get used to it's fullest potential. I'm just not all that into HT. Good movies? Yes. Realistic low frequencies? Yes. All the hooplah and **** swirling around the room? No. My HT rig has no surrounds, just an old pair of AR-9's that go as deep as the mid-low 20's, and image like son-of-a-****.
The deal with this sale was:
Everything is new. Some pieces were used for photo shoots and other totally unrelated to audio applications. I am not allowed to re-sell the piece. Some products offered were not even Onkyo products. Don told me to make several selections, as he was not first on the employee list to select items for purchase. The receiver was actually my third choice after a Onkyo 150watt, 10" or 12" powered sub (SKA-150?) for $20, and a Onk dvd player for $15.
As you can see, not much opportunity for me to get anything for anyone else, as we are talking sale as in past tense.
If somebody see's an FU at the end of the original post, then it's there. If anybody DOESN'T see it, it's plainly not there.

Now that was a classic line if I ever read one!:D
I agree, I don't think that someone posting their good fortune is anything to get in a tissy about, nothing wrong with it.
Onkyo makes decent stuff, and I don't think that was the point of this thread anyhow.
I always like hearing about someone else's score, ESPECIALLY someone whose posts I have read numerous times and gotten a lot of information from. Good on ya, George.
Take care guys. Mike -
George,
Yes I'm Dan from a long time ago and I used the sign on name Mantis right from the beginning.
I don't know what you mean by I think I know so much. But for what it's worth,I work in the field and have for years.I'm not the smartest guy on the block but I know alittle about audio and video.......learn from me if you will or pass.....it's suppost to be fun.
As far as the deals you got,you know as well as I do they are well below cost,I never saw prices that low from any company.Mirage offered us really killer deals on there speakers a few years back,it was 70% off retail........that doesn't happen everyday.
Onkyo and Integra are fine products..if you like the way they sound.Personally I like the way Integra lays out there higher end receivers.Integra research is another beast in itself.
faster100,
I know exactly what deals can be had from B&K and Rotel.....HELLO I work in the field......You will not find that killer of a deal like George got with them.....no way no how.Companies have B stock ,they are not even close to the killer deal he got......all in all.So suprised I am not.Dan

there is no way a HT rig with two speakers could ever match the surround sound experience like a true 5.1 channel system. George, you're missing much of the HT experiece in my opinion. I enjoy two channel for music only.. i would never again watch a movie in two channel.PolkFest 2012, who's going>?
Vancouver, Canada Sept 30th, 2012 - Madonna concert  -
I've seen/heard Mr. Grands 'modest' HT rig and to be quite frank, would take it over just about any other 5.1,6.1,123.1 system out there. He isn't missing a THING (unless you count the bad screening of a great Peter Sellers flick).
When you do business with Mr. Grand, you ALWAYS get more than you bargain for.....

On the sincerety scale of 1-10 (ten being highest)....I'd give that pantload about a -146.

Congrats on the buy George! From the Oinks I have heard, they have strong stereo receivers, but weak HT receivers.
Mantis,
Stop talking like Yoda. Your not green....
and by the way, I agree with Troy....about the 1-10 thing.- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -
Thanks for the good wishes fellows, and a special thank you to Dan, for offering to be my audio mentor.
George Grand (of the Jersey Grand's) -
Sean,
You're not the only one who wants to listen to George's system. If I remember correctly, he has some vintage carver speakers (Amazings?) the size of a fridge for each speaker with tons of woofers and long **** ribbons. With 1K watt/chanel, I'm sure that system can move enough air to tickle your balls. I'd love to hear it too. How bout some pics George?
Maurice -
I'm sure I'll stand corrected, but I *believe* he runs Carver Amazing Platinums. Each speaker sports FOUR acoustic suspension 12" woofs , and a SIXTY inch full-range ribbon (that's right boys, the ribbon ALONE will run 20-20).
I'm guessing as far as 'image' and 'soundstage', Webster's says: see George. You can probably add 'retarded amounts of bass' to the list too.
As far as demo, buy a ****' ticket, and head to the back of the **** line, I've been waiting 3+ yrs, no **** cuts, got it?
Cheers,
