Would you like a brand-new $800 universal player for under $100.00?

This sale item was mentioned several days ago in this thread over at stevehoffman.tv.

I was on the verge of picking up this $100.00 Sherwood Newcastle SD-871 universal player (I believe regular shipping is under $15.00) before the Pioneer Elite came along. In light of the Pioneer Elite universal player going out of stock, I think this universal player could be a worthy substitute and it could be in the same league as the Pioneer in terms of performance. While I can't prove it, it has been mentioned online that this particular Sherwood Newcastle universal player was the template for Denon's 39xx series universal player of the same era.

Disclaimer: Again, no affiliation....just reminding you guys/gals of another potential good deal.

anyone have an opinion on how this would compare to the Denon 2910? I want a decent universial player, but I have like 7 SACD/DVD-A's combined hahaha. I figure the 2910 is good enough for once a month i use it, but could justify a $100 if this was a respectable upgrade...

Is the Denon 39xx significantly better than the 29xx?

Yeah, I couldn't resist for that price. I ordered one a few hours ago. I currently don't have SACD playback in my bedroom, so this will be a nice addition and a backup for other units.

Hmm. very tempting. I am thinking that this matches my AVP-9080 that I got a few years ago.

Yep, it sure does! Hey your counter looks just like mine. ;) Still enjoying it I presume? That is still one of the better sounding procesors I've had in my rig over the years. If the Sherwood universal sounds as good as the 9080, I think I'll be quite pleased with my purchase.

I think these higher-end DVD-based universal players will see significant discounts as Blu-ray players become more mainstream. I think most of us are buying these players for the ability to play SACD/DVD-A and/or better playing quality of CDs. The mainstream consumers don't care about this particular aspect of these players.

FWIW, Onkyo also has a DVD-based universal player on the market called DV-SP506. This player features Burr-Brown 1796 DACs (same DAC used in many top-of-the-line universal players) and can pass DSD in its native form through its HDMI v1.3 output. It will also do direct DSD to analog for SACD using its analog outputs. I have this player and it rocks big time. It's currently going for above $200.00 online, but I suspect it will get discounted by the time Black Friday comes along. I got mine last Black Friday for below $200.00 shipped. So watch out for this model as well.

I think one of the most important aspect of using multi format player as a dedicated 2 channel source is the analog session and a good dac and ability to shut down the video session.

Pioneer DV79Avi does that but I am not sure this Sherwood unit can do the same or not.

I also think Onkyo player would rocks too but waiting for the big time discount.

As for Bluray players, I will wait to hear what people says about analog session of the upcoming oppo BDP-93.

The Sherwood has a 'pure audio mode' feature as well. BTW, I think you mean 'section', not session.

The "pure audio mode" sealed it for me.. figured it was worth $100 to try out the Sherwood.. Never hurts to have another DVDA/SACD player around.. Especially considering I bought the Denon 2910 new for $800 back when it was new..

I took the plunge. At 100 bux it's a no brainer for a backup. I am curious how it will sound compared to my BDP-83SE.

Your probably fine. I never received a confirmation email either, but I printed out my order page for reference. When I checked my status (using order # and email) and it said 'waiting to ship'. That has changed from yesterday when it was 'processing'.

I ordered one about an hour ago for $105 to my door.
Like the man said..."It's a no brainer"
It worked out good for me. My DVD player has been acting up lately and not wanting to read a large % of discs. I can have this do double duty for A/V both.
I have a Panny BDP-65 but it really sucks and takes forever to load up. IT boasts 2 sec load time which it does but after that you need more patience than I have.

I ordered mine over the phone.
I asked about confirmation and I was told I'd receive an email confirmation later today when it was shipped.
He checked the area I live in and since I'm in Indiana he said they'd ship today to my area.
It seems like a good deal. I hope they sound good. IF not, it should be a good dvd player

Anybody have any opinions if this would be a step up, down or a parallel move compared to my Pioneer Elite DV46AV?

I have 2 DV46's right now, so I don't really have a need for an additional player, but ...

This is just a guess since I have never even seen the Sherwood. I'd say the Sherwood is a step up on the DV46 and I will even think the Sherwood can go toe-to-toe with the Pioneer Elite in the other thread.

Looks like another great deal. I would love to see internal pics of this if anyone wouldn't mind taking some when they get this unit.

Rumor has it (and I've seen documentation that goes along with the rumor) that the Sherwood unit has the same basic internals as the Parasound D200 and Halo D3. If you search with Google images, you will find some German forum site with internal shots of the D3. Sadly, it is not all that impressive. Small switching power supply for the whole unit, not much else to comment on. Lots of empty space.

Its about what I'd expect in a $300-500 unit, but I really feel sorry for those who paid thousands for that Halo unit.

I think this Sherwood may be a decent sounding unit, and a good deal for the price, but I don't expect it to be a reference player.

I really think that Pioneer Elite (79avi) in the other deal thread was a much better player for only $50 more.
