Reading the coverage, I honestly can't believe the "no data and voice at the same time" restriction still exists on Verizon. For a phone like the iPhone that's a really big deal; I don't "talk" on my phone all that often but it definitely happens that I am talking and want to use the internet too.

Thats because the GSM network phones have two radios.. 3G and EDGE... you can do voice on EDGE and data on 3G simultaneously.

The CDMA phones use one radio and can't do data at the same time...

    Here it is!!!!!

Its not true. It can't possibly be. I won't believe it until...oh wait....restricting the market with one carrier was retarded and this was inevitable?

That's what I've been wondering Bob, where did you read that?

A few places, but here it's spelled out :

    http://gizmodo.com/5730618/verizon-iphone-can-act-as-a-wi+fi-hotspot
It sounds like you'll activate the hotspot feature using an app which will be included on the Verizon devices, but of course you'll have to keep in mind that Verizon does not allow for voice and data usage simultaneously.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Retarded might be overstating it, considering Apple just dived into the mobile phone market cold, with one product, and became one of the largest providers within two years.

Didn't say it wasn't successful, but they still capped their success unnecessarily. From a business standpoint this made little sense.

If I'm a shareholder I'd be a lot happier with making my product available to more customers, at least the largest providers. I'd have purchase an iPhone if it was on Verizon, and while I considered switching to AT & T, I never did....because well, its' AT & T.

He didn't say that. Eventually there will be a 4G capable iPhone on a 4G network.

This phone is not 4G capable, so you'll have to wait at least six months (Apple does iPhone upgrades in June / July, traditionall) or a year for that, AND buy a new phone.

And AT&T's stock is down a whopping 1%. Not exactly tanking :)

I just don't understand how more people aren't turned of by the 'can't talk and data at the same time' restriction.

Maybe I'm just the exception, but I do talk and data simultaneously ALL THE TIME. I use my phone as a wi-fi hotspot (using my 3G coverage) so that I can get on with my laptop and do conference calls at the same time, could not imagine losing this feature.

I was just telling someone a couple weeks back that we would switch to Verizon the day that they came out with the iPhone (they already have plenty of android phones for me to choose from but need an iphone for the wife), assuming that since this is 2010 the data/voice restriction was a thing of the past. Now it looks like I'll be sticking with AT&T for at least the forseeable future.

I've been with AT&T for 12 years now and haven't had any problems, but I have noticed during the last couple months the data speeds in my area have dropped somewhat (voice is still fine), and was considering a move to Verizon with their faster speeds...looks like that'll have to wait.

Now I'm holding out hope that millions of people will bail to Verizon and that this will free up some network bandwidth on AT&T and maybe my speeds will improve.

Okay, he kept mentioning 4G as if were relevant to this thread, so I thought maybe this phone was 4G and it slipped by me.

They must not mind the extra radiation while talking on the phone.

as I understood it the iphone 4 was going to be the second 4g phone for verizons network.

I do not mind not surfing the web and on the phone at the same time maybe because I am normal and only want to do one thing at a time on my phone.

Verizon launched their 4G LTE network over a month ago. Its not hard to ascertain that with the inclusion of Apple's iPhone in their offerings, that at some point Apple will release a 4G iPhone for Verizon's network.

Maybe he thought the iPhone 4 was 4G, but he didn't say that earlier.

I would say no, since you can buy macs all over the place, such as Best Buy and iPods at Walmart.

A friend of mine has a Droid Incredible on Verizon, and we tested this out recently. He called me (while I was still in the room) and we were able to open up the browser and browser while still one the phone call. I really don't think i'ts a limitation still.

If you guys were connected to WiFi, it doesn't count.

My iPad is on Verizon....what on earth makes you think the iPhone isn't coming? Lol.

Hahaha, well it isn't even "on" Verizon though, it is connected via WiFi to a mobile hotspot. The iPad is technically only "on" AT&T. The iPhone required a replaced radio which is how it is different.

My wife and I will be switching to iPhones when they are released, and are already on the list. IMO, it's a great interface and very user friendly in most aspects. Say what you want about Apple or the iPhone, their product works well for a lot of people, and I'll be happy with the switch.

What exactly makes a "world phone" to you? A pretty good chunk of the world uses GSM (the technology AT&T uses) and Apple sells iPhones all over the world. The AT&T iPHone has a SIM card, that you can pop out and put a different one in for international use.

I thought a world phone meant it supported cdma and four gsm bands... I am probably wrong.

If it uses a SIM, it's world capable. North America and the Europe market are two different animals. We chose our phone route long after they chose theirs'.
