vibration and microphonics in XO caps

Is vibration and/or microphonics an issue in internal crossovers?

I have plenty of small, otherwise unusable pieces of Dynamat Extreme available as leftover from Dynamatting my drivers. Would it be worthwhile to put a small piece on any of the caps, inductors or boards? Or would that actually be detrimental?

I noticed either foam tape or is glue in use in a lot of the original boards-I'm assuming that was intended to address the same issue?? or is that just used to secure the parts from flopping around?

Is hot gluing (sp?) components just as good a solution?

Thoughts?

In my personal speakers, I mount the components to 3/4" MDF via zip ties and hot glue(sparingly on resistors). Then bolt the MDF boards to the cabinet.

Dynamat may be ok on caps, but I would keep it away from everything else.

I've wondered about this too. It seems like the components are still subject to vibration even with glue and tie-wraps. Why isn't it common practice to mount the XO externally?

I'll do that later when I really have some spare time. :o PtP with some nice new foil inductors and higher end caps and resistors.

What really got me curious about this was mainly the caps. I have a soup can 91µF film cap here, that essentially rings when I wrap my knuckles against it. Its also present in smaller film caps, just not as obvious. So that got me wondering if that can have any negative affect on anything audible.

I'm sure I'll never know for sure, but really wanted to be sure I didn't add to any issues.

So I'll continue Hot Gluing as I have been (minus the resistor), and add a small scrap of Dynamat to the caps where possible.

    Thanks Mike

I guess the question is how much of an impact does vibration cause to make it worth doing???. I just read a recent thread on the external XO and believe the general consensus was the hassle of the extra external wires and such was a negative factor.
