MP3 volume

I got some new headphones for MP3 player and have to push the player pretty hard, using up battery power faster. I knew the phones would take some extra umph.
Can the volume on audio be increased when transferring music to an MP3 (or when burning to a disc for that matter)?
thanks

Please note that increasing the MP3's volume isn't actually going to save any battery life. The player's amp will still have to put out the same amount of power for any specific volume regardless of the input level.
