Hello,
I just recieved my new TSi400 towers i'm using for fronts yesterday. I do not see in the manual if I shoul set my receiver as "Large" or "Small" for those 2 channels. Does anyone know what it should be? I set them to large for now.

Thanks!

I have TSi400's as well. I believe the setting depends on the AVR and if you have a sub or not. In my case I have a PSW505 and set the towers to large since my AVR said if they are towers, set to large. Sounds great, no complaints.

    Good luck.

    mudwrx,
Thank you. I ordered a PSW505 last week and it is scheduled for delivery today!

I have a Denon AVR-788, I'll flip through the manual again but its good to know that you have the same speakers and your avr is set to large.

    Thanks!

I'm dying to find out how everything sounds with the sub! I also have a CS20 center channel so hopefully I will be happy with it all.

I think we have a similar setup. I also have the CS20 center. I have FXiA4's for surrounds. You're going to love the PSW505, make sure you give it some good movies to chew on and you'll hear what it can do.

I think the "large" and "small" settings are inaccurate labels. From what I understand, it's more about how low the speakers will go frequency-wise as opposed to physical driver size. I think the TSi 400s will go down to 44hz and the CS20 will go down to 58hz. As such, my avr sees the RTi A7s as large, the CS20 as small, and the monitor 50s as small. So I run the A7s full band and set the PSW505 crossover to 60Hz. I think 80Hz is the THX standard but in my setup, 60Hz seems to blend better.

    I agree you'll love the PSW505 :)

Do you have any recommendations as far as Blu-Ray moves go? I dont watch many movies but I'd like to go pick something up after work today.

PrazVT, thanks for the info. DO you have any experience using Audyssey? My receiver has it - I might just run that and let it complete the setup for me, not sure yet.

    @ Linkon

Yes, I have Audyssey MultEQ XT on my Denon. I usually run it using the recommended 6 different placements.

I find that for movies / TV, it's very effective at room correction.

For 2 ch music, I usually bypass Audyssey because it makes my front towers sound a little weak and tinny.

The only real manual tweak that's required is adjusting the sub gain - Audyssey tends to set it a little low.

I would say try it and watch a movie and see if you like it.

From what I hear (no pun intended), War of the Worlds seems to be one of the best movies to show off a sub.

The Hurt Locker is another good movie to demo on as well - lot of explosions / gunfire through the surrounds

    Praz - thanks again.
I just got all of my speakers and sub hooked up and the highs sounded a little flat so I ran Audyssey. I agree - it set the sub a little low and it made the highs a little too bright. But overall - holy crap!!!! Sounds great!!! That sub shakes my house!! Maybe I should just let these speakers break in for a few days before I start trying to tweak things too much but its hard not too :D

I have about the same set up. TSI 400's for fronts, CS20 Center, Monitor 30 surrounds, PSW505 and Velodyne Impact ten for subs. I have the fronts and center set to small as well as my surrounds of course. My crossover is set to 80. Sounds good to me with movies and music. Good luck.

Low frequency effects are not being directed to your sub if your speakers are set to large. Link below...

"Redirecting the bass to the subwoofer relieves the receiver amplifiers from having to work on reproducing the low frequencies and this greatly improves the headroom. If you happen to be using Audyssey MultEQ for room correction, you will achieve much better low frequency performance because the MultEQ subwoofer filters have 8x higher resolution than the filters in the other channels.

Here is a better rule: All speakers are Small. In today’s complicated AVR lingo that just means: If you have a subwoofer you should always turn bass management on. Always. Even if your receiver clings to the past and automatically sets your speakers to Large."

    http://www.audyssey.com/blog/2009/05/small-vs-large/

I found that audyssey set ALL of my speakers for full band (Large). I found, for my room, these settings were optimal:
    Front 50Hz
    Center 60Hz
    Surround 60Hz
    Surround Back 100Hz
    Sub 120Hz

Low frequency effects are not being directed to your sub if your speakers are set to large.

I think that depends on your AVR - I know my Yamaha and my Denon both have "LFE + Front (or Main)" settings that allow the sub to operate if all the speakers are set to full band (Large).

Otherwise for the TSi 400s and Monitor 70s, I'd agree it's probably better to set 'em all to 'small'.

My Denon has 2 options "LFE" or "LFE+Main". I switch between the 2 options when going from movies to music. the "LFE+Main" definitley sounds better with most music but sometimes it seems to send too much bass to the sub during certain scenes in certain movies so I switch to LFE. I wish there was an easier way to switch between the 2 options :D

Depends on your main speakers. What are they? They should be set to small. Snip and link:

I think audyssey changed them to small when I ran it but I will double check. Thanks for that link, that was very helpful!
