Mark,
I'd be interested in helping out. Some of the DFW area guys have been to the house. They should be the ones to determine if it is to far out of the way for the area. It's a bit of a drive. (That being said most DFW folks are used to driving a bit to get to someplace)
Just thinking as I type....
The folks at the demo's.
I have no issue with CP members and any friends they may want to bring. Since it would be open to the general public as well, and knowing that Polk Audio wants this to be a success, I'm guessing that some kind of screening process would go on. As long as there is something that satifies the folks at Polk I'm fine. Tyler Acoustics just put emails up on the website and then left anyone to contact them. Hopefully there would be a bit more to it than that.
Are the demo's going to be designed for a groups or individuals?
Basically if you were doing groups it would be more like CP gathering where you open your house up for a day and let folks come and go as they please. It would be easier for me to do this sort of open house format rather than individuals on demand. Also, it would be nice to have some local polkies co host open house. That way the folks that are unfamiliar with polk would have more than one person to talk too.
For individuals, it would be easier to have a dedicated room or leave the speakers in your existing setup for the purposes of the demo. That way not as much planning and prep would be needed.
Also, if possible, I would prefer a no kids rule (under 13). Kids aren't going to be buying the speakers, and thier opinion doesn't count for a speaker purchase --- so don't bring them to a demo.
Are the demo's going to be HT or 2 ch based or both?
For the best impressions, some room setup would have to be done. I can do either or both. This again is why I would prefer to set aside one day so I can get all the prep work done in advance. I assume some basic equipment requirements will need to be met also. I'm sure that will come out later. Also, if these are going to be brand new speakers, the hosts will need a bit of time to break them in for the best sound.
Is there going to be a minimum availability requirement?
Is there going to be a requirement to host or be available for x number of demo's per month? This is more of a planning requirement for the hosts and also to get approval for those that have wives that will have to sanction the demo's
Other things to consider....
If this is a true demo, and no sales are going on there should not be any issues with running a business out of your house which might conflict with local zoning and HOA's.
Just for the legal aspect of things, there should be a minimum liability insurance requirement that the hosts should have to meet. Around here most homeowners minimim's for liability is $300K. Not to be a cynic, but you never know what will happen when dealing with John Q.
Parking is really only a concern for group demo days. Some HOA's have restrictions and some condo's can only have so many in guest spots.
Some folks home's might have more than one system setup. Some ideas on how to keep the focus on the new Polk's would be helpful to me. (They might sound better than the existing 2ch setup anyway).
As far as the reward for doing this, I'll leave that up to Polk Audio. I think it should be scaled. Meaning, that someone who gives the speakers a lot of exposure should be rewarded more than a person who just does a few demos to a couple folks.
I think a grassroot demo is a great idea for Polk Audio. It gives folks a chance to talk to an enthusiast and not a salesman. I think most folks always wonder at a salesman's motivation when he is pushing one brand. This way is just a consumer can put his own ears on some speakers with similiar equipment that he might already have.

Any progress with Sound Scape?
I may do a fly by in the next day or two to see what is what there. I will not say anything just look at what they have going on in there.

I know they guys there pretty well. I can talk to them about this idea if it is going to be a possibility in the near future.
Being very Polk friendly, I can't imagine they wouldn't want to have it. -

It was brought up but I haven't heard anything definitive yet. There's still no product until next year anyways so, there's no hurry. The initial stuff will all be press oriented after that so I'm not sure when I'll get the ones for the demo program let alone Soundscape. I'll bring it up again.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint. -
I was planning on stopping in one day this week anyway because I am working downtown and was just going to swing by on my way home one night.

Hi Mark,
I want to thank you again for your efforts and coordination with Polk Audio management team.
I was wondering whether the design has been finalized enough such that Polk would feel comfortable in releasing the preliminary specifications and dimensions of the various models? Would it be possible to pass the question on to the Polk folks?
Thanks.

I posted that some time ago Larry. I'm not sure what thread it's in but I posted the entire press release. Just throwing out the thought, but I am trying to get a GTG for the Midwest folks sometime after the first of the year..any chance that there could be a new LSi model demo depending on attendance and location?"....not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted." Hi Mark,
Thanks for the response.
Here's is the last press release I have seen. Is there another more recent release?
Polk Introduces New Flagship LSiM Home Audio Speaker Lineup
I was hoping that now that Polk is nearing production, that they might be in a position to release a little more of the technical specifications that they routinely list on their website, i.e. frequency response, nominal impedence, recommended amplifier power, efficiency, dimensions, etc.
Perhaps they might be willing to release the preliminary specifications for the various models in the new series in an upcoming newsletter.

bumpity bump.
Mark, are we getting closer?I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie. -

OK guys, there have been some "issues" and "delays" with the new LSiM to say the least but I'm trying to roll the new LSiM forum demos out as I fix, ammend and close the older Polkie, at-home alone loudspeaker demos listed in the Speakers section of the forum.
If there is anyone that wants to join them, please state your LSiM interest here and the other demos...in their respective threads.
Sorry for the delay but we've had all kinds of small logistical issues affect them as well, as a member taking off with a pair for personal use....never to be seen again.
It won't stop the program but it will get more strict.
Thanks for your interest and those that have kept the machine rolling in my absence.

Mark,
I am still very interested in hosting a demo of the new LSi series. I currently have 2 pairs of LSi 9's, a pair of LSi 7's, 1 pair each of SDA SRS 2's, SDA 1C's, And SDA CRS+'s.
I have several amplifiers to demo with. Including an upgraded Parasound HCA-3500, a Parasound HCA-2200 Mk II, and a Parasound HCA-1500a.
I can test them in both a dedicated 2 channel system as well as a full home theater currently equipped with all LSi series speakers.
I am located in Niles, MI and would obviously be willing to have pre screened folks come in and check them out.

Hi Mark,
I am still interested in hosting a few demos depending on the details.
My situation is the same as I posted earlier in this thread quoted below.
Al Ballard provided me with the dimensions of the floor-standing models and it looks like the LSiM707 is going to be too deep to fit inside my shadow box. The LSiM705 probably will fit.
I don't have the dimensions of the center channels or surround speakers, but judging from Russ' photos even the larger center should fit in my set-up. I don't know whether the surrounds will fix inside my columns. (The columns are 14" deep by 18" wide and they currently house LSiF/Xs.)
As I mentioned I have a home theater setup, but I have to send my projector out for repair.
I look forward to hearing from you.
LarryLarry Chanin wrote: »Hi Mark,

I have a dedicated home theater that seats 8. I live in Sarasota, Florida in a medium-sized home. The theater is conveniently located adjacent to our great room and two bathrooms. So we should be able to handle a reasonable sized "crowd" given that we could seat several people in the great room discussing the merits of the speakers, partaking of refreshments, and then circulating members into the theater eight people at a time.
My theater is acoustically treated. It is a 7.1 setup with LC265i in-walls for the surround back channels that can not be replaced by new demo speakers. In addition, I have LSiF/X for surrounds, SDA-1C'S for the mains and a pair of SDA-CRS+ for centers, and I would consider replacing them with the appropriate LSiM demo speakers.
Ideally, a Polk Audio representative, or a local Polk Audio retailer, would be available to assist me in setting up, demoing the speakers answering questions, and restoring my setup.
I am using Parasound power amplifiers to power my speakers, and currently an Onkyo PR-SC866 preamplifier that handles the lossless formats and has Audyssey room correction.
Here's some information on my setup:
Now you see them? Now you don?t
Larry's Home Theater
In addition to being interested in obtaining more details about the logistics of the demos, I am very interested in learning more about the specifications of the soon to be released LSiM series. In particular, I am interested in knowing whether the LSiM series is reasonably timbre matched to the LC265is LSiF/Xs that I have. Also I would want to be reasonably sure that the new LSi M 707 tower speakers are as adept as my SDA-1Cs in reaching reference levels, and likewise with the LSiM 706c Center Channel Speakers in replacing the SDA-CRS+. In other words, what will the efficiency and power handling limits of these new speakers.
One other consideration is that my SDA-1Cs are designed to be placed close to the front wall and they are not too deep since they are placed inside an acoustically transparent shadow box that is 16" deep. My surround speakers are concealed in columns that are 13" deep. So I would need to know the dimensions of these various speakers.
Thanks for coordinating this concept.
Please feel free to contact me directly at lfchanin@verizon.net.

P.S. This web page may be of interest.
It took us forty years to build this speaker.
You should wait a few more weeks to hear them -
Mark,
I have a friend that owns an Audio shop here in NJ, but he does not carry the Polk line. Do you think a location such as his would be appropriate for the Lsim demo? I'm sure there are some pros and cons, but was wondering if you thought it would be a conflict of interest. If the idea has some possibiliteis, let me know and I'll run the idea by him.

Hi Mark,
Can you confirm the information presented in the following thread stating that this series won't be released until July and all speakers in the series won't be released at the same time?

Thanks.

I finally de-lurked and registered yesterday, so I know I'm "too new" for any of the normal in-home demos. (I got turned onto Polks when my father brought a pair of Monitors home in ~1982 and bought my SDA-CRS+ new in 1988...but the clock doesn't start until you start participating...) At the same time, I'm in the process of finishing up my basement non-dedicated HT/listening area and eventually hope/plan to put the LSiM 707s down here anyway...
Current Polk speakers as noted below in .signature. Basement AVR is for now only an Onkyo TX-SR309 5.1 while I negotiate with the Chancellor of the Exchequer for funding. Planning for a good AVR with pre-out, and discrete amps for 7.1.
Basement has significant extra soundproofing (RSIC/GreenGlue/double 5/8" on ceiling) and the house is in the middle of the DC/Baltimore/Annapolis triangle. If this program goes forward and there's a need for a site in the DC/Baltimore area, please let me know.
--Rip (CNWDI)Current polk speakers:
Family room 5.1: TC265i R/L, VM10 Center, RC65i surrounds (couldn't match the TCs)
Basement non-dedicated 7.1 HT: SDA-CRS+ R/L, 255c-LS Center, LSiFX surrounds, RC80i in-ceiling rear surround, plus Wharfedale 12" sub (some day I'll get around to building 15" F-20 sub).
