PS3 died, need guidance

Yes, I know this should be in gaming, but this is a multipronged question (you will see why in a bit) so I figured I'd just go here instead of the multi post route.

As I said, the PS3 dies suddenly, doesnt play. when you turn it of and on, you get a quick yellow light then a flashing red, apparetly this is one of the manifestations of what they call the YLOD (yellow light of death). but wait, doesnt this stuff only happen to the XBOX? uh...apparently no, this happens alot.

I will say I NEVER use the PS3 for gaming. no games out for it I like, have been patiently waiting for Gran Turismo 5 to come out for YEARS but I only use the PS3 for Blueray.

because of that, I have little stomach for paying Sony 150.00 - 175.00 to fix it. screw them!!

I have researched 2 options,

1) there is someone selling a YLOD repair kit for 35.00 bucks, says it can be fixed with household items.

2) take the 150.00 and just get a dedicated Blueray player.

I need your opinion, and what Blueray player should I get if I go that route. I'm looking bang for buck, I dont need a 1000 blue ray player that is 1.8% better than one much cheaper.

any help would be appreciated, as I would like to have a functioning blueray player by Polkfest

Your roughly 100 bucks or shy of the BD80 which is a much better player than any Sony PS3 out there. Go for a dedicated unit and be done with it. PS3 is great for what it does, but there is better out there.

My kid's PS3 succumbed to the YLOD.

They found a Youtube link to do a repair which required disassembly and cleanup of the thermal grease.

It worked just long enough for them to recover their account info.

We ended up getting a new PS3 Slimline.

    YMMV....

Have to disagree, for $150 it's a no brainer just fix the ps3. Nothing in its price point can touch it for blu ray playback. I own the oppo 83 and ps3 and PQ is equal. The ps3 has fast load times, excellent pq and the firmware can be updated automatically.

I just received my PS3 back from Sony last week due to the YLOD. Less then a 2 week turn-around so I was happy.

During that time it was out for repair I went and bought the s370 for $150. It's a great bare-bones machine. Equally as fast as the PS3 with equal PQ and SQ. Load times are super fast, even with Kick-****, less then a minute. I read reports of 10+ minute load times on other players with this disc.

Your out $150 either way. Fix the PS3 for that price or go get what I got, a 370. I'd seriously steer clear of other brand players in this price range though, the net is loaded with people having disc playing problems (or not playing discs at all) and very, very slow load times.

I agree with this whole heartedly. I had the PS3 which I never used for games either and ended up dumping it in favor of the Oppo BDP-83. I think the PQ is much better, but I guess that's subjective. You could also spend the $35 for the DIY repair and have a good back-up.

If you have to ask about repairing your PS3 I think it means you don't really want to.

went with the oppo bdp-80. I care not about upconverting DVD's and apparently that is the major diff between the 80 and the 83.

    thanks for the help gang.

Tougher call since you're not gaming. I'd just get my PS3 repaired if it happened to me, but I've yet to lay eyes on the better Oppo BD player...

Glad you solved the problem. Out of curiosity..I've NEVER heard of the YLOD....

About HOW LONG a run does a PS3 have before that because I know people who've had theirs for YEARS and I just bought a PS1 to experiment with the CDP...and though the spindle shows some signs of wear the unit works fine and you KNOW how OLD that is? Does or can anyone vouch for the Oppos reliability? I know it's a good machine. But does anyone really know how long it will last at this point?

Also, looks like you have a PROJECTOR...and so do most of you who see the OPPO as a better player....I'm sure that ONLY when you PROJECT an image much larger than 40 some inches can you 'even' see a noticeable difference between an OPPO and a PS3. Is that what we're 'really' talking about here because, as you know the PS3 has a super CELL processor in it? Guys at MIT link those CELL processors together to create mini-supercomputers?

Knock on wood...my PS3 is a couple years old....runs great, looks great on the 46" screen --as good as anything else would on it.

Carry on. Actually, I should think about a PROJECTOR myself..because my room lends itself to it....I have a clean wall of about 8.5 x 11.5 that's screaming for a screen! Something to think about!

How far out of warranty are you. If you are barely out of warranty I have heard of Sony fixing it for free. They are afraid of losing people to xbox.

I have had my PS3 for many years and never had a problem. This is actually the first time I have heard of the YLOD. I don't game except for maybe twice a year. That said, I think if mine went down I would definitely feel the need to fix it. I like having the option to game AND the wireless capability, streaming, etc.

Maybe in the next revision of the Playstation they'll just remove the error light altogether, like Microsoft did with the 360.

different situation for me. i'd probably pay sony the $150 and **** and moan for days to come. reason for me is that i stream from my computer and the net via the ps3. great entertainment hub and a damn fast-loading blu-ray player.

if the bd-83 is that much better, and usually you get what you pay for, then for me, ignorance is bliss because i don't have that kind of cash to drop on a 5th bd player for the household.

I think getting a stand alone player is the way to go. Check out offerings from LG and Panasonic. Netflix and other streaming services are golden .

I got rid of my Ps3 as I didn't use it for what it can do. I'm much happier with owning a stand alone player.

I have one game for my PS3, and played it half a dozen times over these past 2+ years, it's that Drakes Fortune.

I will say this, playing a game with that amount of detail on a 96" screen with full surround sound is pretty awesome, and while I'm no gamer I still like to play once in a long while. One more reason why I had to get my PS3 fixed.

Many aren't interested in the new 3d but it's nice to have a player that does it all.

It's good to know that I'll be 3d capable, but I'm not even going to consider it until it's glasses free at a price I can afford, so I suspect by that time my current ps3 will be long gone.
My equipment sig felt inadequate and deleted itself.
