speaker setting small or large.
i've been tweaking my system yet again. my front stage is nothing to brag about so i'll leave the name of the speakers in question out. anyhow. i'm trying to figure out if setting my speakers to small is giving me the best from my center and l and r speakers. i have subs and i know that the subs should handle the bass and the lfe. so who sets their speakers to small/large and why?

It depends on the design of the speakers as well as how they're setup. If you route power from the receiver to the subwoofer to the speakers, then you should set the system to Large. If you are running from the receiver to the speakers and route signal from the receiver to the subwoofer, you'll typically use the Small setting. The real issue, to me, is that setting the receiver to Small means you have an additional crossover in the mix--which may degrade audio quality with some loudspeakers.
If/when connected to a receiver, I run my SDA-1's and Monitor 5's on "Large" mode, since both are full-range speakers and the fact that I don't own a subwoofer.polkaudio Monitor 5 Series II

I set my fronts as small, and let the sub handle all that power-hungry lows. If I had a separate amp I would probably leave them as large._________________________________________________

Im running my fronts small as well due to the fact the my AVR is my weak. And the sound is flat with weak bass in Large.

I am running my RTi12's at small eventhough it was against my way of thinking. Even with my Parasound amp at 205/w I still did it. In my opinion a good sub or two will produce better bass than any towers can. I switch back and forth between small and large and it convinced me.:D
Here is a interesting article that made me even think about it.Try it and see !

Set them both ways & give a listen. Go with whatever sounds best to you. Bear in mind though that very few speakers are truly "full range" & will benefit with a sub (or better yet...two). Here's a nice article to read & do a search on the topic for more info. http://forum.ecoustics.com/bbs/messages/34579/128214.html I have my mains set at 50Hz & the center & surrounds at 70Hz.
