SACDs not playing on Sony DAV-C450 - quick fix ?

Was recently given a used C450 system so I thought it was good time to finally get a few SACDs, unfortunately when I pop in the CD/SACD hybrids I got on Amazon the get recognized as CDs...

Anyone had that problem before ?

I looked at the manual (http://esupport.sony.com/perl/model-...pl?mdl=DAVC450) but there is nothing about selecting the HD layer of an SACD, unlike on the DVP-NS999ES (manual : http://www.givemefile.net/smanuals/d...file/1326.html) that I saw being discussed here.

Since there is some hiss in the speakers when the volume is above 0 and some "stripes" in the picture when I play a DVD (RCA or YUV) I'm thinking I might open it up...

Too bad I was looking forward to enjoying SACDs, thought I would be able to do that with my PS3 but when I bought it in 2008 they had alread removed the SACD capability.

Thanks !

    Thanks for the welcome.

Unfortunately there is no option to select the CD/SACD layer on a hybrid disk I could find and the manual isn't showing any either : http://tinyurl.com/2gx646k

I guess it would select it automatically if it was working properly...

Well it's internal. Having said that I opened it up to see if I could clean the lense but it's a mess in there what with the 5 disc changer and all, put it back together, no change.

er...it's an "all-in-one" system containing both the player and the receiver, here is the link to the manual I posted above : http://tinyurl.com/2gx646k

Thanks, that's a thought, but looking at your first message above I could not use optical out into my C450 to use it as a receiver, how does one play hi-rez SACD layer (s) via analog ?

There are settings in the menu. Just at a quick glance under playing discs, you have settings for multi channel and 2 channel. Make sure you go over all settings as per the manual.

Yes but that works only once it's recognized the hybrid as a SACD and that's not happening for me, oddly enough there is no way to force that if it doesn't work automatically. At this point it looks like I'm better off getting a cheap separate player as suggested by keiko but need to figure out how to connect it to my receiver is optical isn't an option.

Some players don't or have a problem with hybrids. Yours maybe one of them. If you get a seperate player, you have to connect 5 analog cables to the receiver. Meaning you need a receiver with analog inputs. Unless your going to spend some coin for gear that can do it by hdmi, but I find that unlikely given your situation. Hi-rez won't play over a digital toslink connection. Lots of choices for SACD players that offer decent playback for a couple hundies. I use a Pioneer 59 avi. You can buy these used for around 2 bills, great dvd upconversion, great sacd playback too. You would still need a receiver with analog inputs though for all 5 channels.

Thanks, analog inputs then, are they generally via RCA ? Won't work with the C450 in any case, will get a DVD cleaner disc to see if it helps.

Wonder why SACD sign can't pass through optical, a protection scheme maybe?

Makes sense and you do need to got to "analog" at some point anyway to listen to the music ;-)

    Hehe ;-)
Bad news here, the cleaning DVD didn't help with the SACD situation, I guess a new laser would be in order, probably not worth the trouble given the average audio of the system anyway according to reviews.
