DB651 - left and right front speaker cut out simultaneously

Installed a new Pioneer deck about 3 weeks ago (BT6200). Ran it with my factory speakers for about 2 weeks (no sub/no amp). Installed these new Polk db651s about 10 days ago. They sound awesome, BTW. Yesterday while driving to work, both fronts stopped working at the same time. Rear speakers still sound great. Called the tech assuming the issue was the Pioneer, however he says that it may be the speakers having shorted out.

I can test this rather easily as he suggested, but wondering if it's likely that it's a short, cause it seems rather odd to me.
