raiders of the lost MW6600X

I've posted in the wanted forum that I'm looking for a replacement driver for a SDA1 project, but to no avail. So, I thought I could look for a replacement driver still in a cabinet. The problem is, I don't know which speakers in the Polk lineup used the MW6600X. If someone has this information, can you please help. I only need one, and I will likely sell the other parts on CP!

If they are (1984) SDA 1's wouldn't the mid woofers be MW6501's ??
newbie308: Polk generally printed the WM model number and manufacture date on the back of the mid woofers. Have you removed a driver and taken a look?

I have one of the drivers in my hand, and on the back label is stamped MW6600X. These are the 1983 SDA1 Signature speakers. They have two SL1000 tweeters, four MW6600 drivers, and a passive sub woofer. Unfortunately a previous owner must have slipped with a screwdriver and punctured the surround on one driver. Since I'm trying to restore these, I'd like to replace the dammaged driver. I havn't been able to locate one, so I was hoping to find annother model of Polk speaker that was known to use this driver. I thought maybe I could dismantle annother set of speakers (early Monitors?) to get what I need for the SDA's!Sources: Technics SL1200MKII | SME3009 Tonearm | Monster Alpha 1 MC cartridge | Oppo UDP203 disk player | Nikko NT-790 analog tuner | Musical Fidelity Trivista 21 DAC | Preamp: Threshold SL-10 | Amplifier: Threshold Stasis 2 | Speakers: Snell Acoustics C/V | Kimber 12-TC bi wire speakers | Analysis plus Oval 1 preamp to amp | Wireworld Eclipse 7 DAC to Preamp | Wireworld eclipse digital IC Oppo to DAC | Audioquest Quartz tuner to preamp |

The parts list calls for MW6501's, 2 SL1000 tweeters and 4 MW6501's.

The 6600s were developed of the RTA 12B and used in early SDAs I had a pair of 1983 SDA1s and they had 6600s in them I even mentioned it to DK You have to be careful about going by Polks parts lists. For example they show all RTA12 and 12Bs with 6500s and 12Cs with 6600 and 6500 Yet every single 12B I have had has 6600s and MP response to a review of the 12B by Off the Record talks about the new 6600X driver being developed for the 12B. It is even mentiond in 1982 Lit. Point being he has the right drivers but the later ones could have come with 6501s. I prefer the 6600 in the 12s as i have compared them both but never did it in the SDA Keith

So when you mention "Signature", are these SDA 1's or SDA SRS 1's.
I thought Matt's signature was only placed on the SRS (Signature Reference Series), or were early 1's an exception?VTL ST50 w/mods / RCA6L6GC / TlfnknECC801S

According to the literature on this form (Link check post #7) they are a Transitional Model that came out between the SDA 1 & SDA 1A.“The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.” ~ Mark Twain

Do you have any spares that you would be willing to sell?
Sorry, no. I'm keeping this last spare for myself. They pop up on eBay every so often--that's where I got a trio of them.I say they are signature series since they have a brass badge below the tweeters that say "signature series" and have M. Polk's signature on them. I read a few old posts that discuss the SDA1 A having vents below the tweeters and this badge is where the ports would normaly be. However there are no ports drilled when I looked inside the cabinets. The other thing I read was how to convert a SDA1 A to SDA1 B by removing an inside horizontal baffle. That baffle is not in these cabinets.
Wrong. It was a SDA-1 to 1A conversion. Polk did some at the factory and others were sold by Polk as part of a DIY kit. You had to open the cabinet a bit more to fit SL2000 tweets and plug up the port holes. In addition, you had to remove a horizontal baffle (the vertical baffle was to be kept in). In addition, you had to further stuff the cabinet and modify the crossover and rewire the midwoofers.polkaudio Monitor 5 Series II

It looks as though my 2 channel system is comming together nicely! My gear is neither new or high end, but it is what I can afford right now. I'm waiting for Sonicaps and Mills resistors for the SDA's crossovers, and I don't know if standard 14ga 300v tinned copper wire will be suitable for connecting the speakers to the crossovers. Once I have completed the rebuild of these speakers, I will be ready to plug it all in and throw the switch. Here is a list of what I have gathered so far:
SDA1 Signature speakers with upgraded crossovers
Adcom GFA1 amplifier (not sure if I'm going to use this)
Adcom GTP500 II preamp with tuner and remote (definitely going to use this)
Thorens TD280 MK II turntable (will do for now)
Carver TFM35 amplifier
Im open to suggestions for: interconnect cables, future turntables (and cartridges).Sources: Technics SL1200MKII | SME3009 Tonearm | Monster Alpha 1 MC cartridge | Oppo UDP203 disk player | Nikko NT-790 analog tuner | Musical Fidelity Trivista 21 DAC | Preamp: Threshold SL-10 | Amplifier: Threshold Stasis 2 | Speakers: Snell Acoustics C/V | Kimber 12-TC bi wire speakers | Analysis plus Oval 1 preamp to amp | Wireworld Eclipse 7 DAC to Preamp | Wireworld eclipse digital IC Oppo to DAC | Audioquest Quartz tuner to preamp |
