DSW Micropro 2000 overheating when idling

Hi friends! My first post here.

I have a DSW Micro 2000 sub. I absolutely love it for classic music listening, but it runs very hot when idling, i.e., when the soft power switch is off, and the rear power light is yellow. When in use, it actually runs very cool. I have to physically switch the power off every time when I finish listening, otherwise it would produce a horrible burnt plastic kind of smell that fills the room.

Is this the normal behavior of this sub, or maybe something is wrong with my specific unit? I tried to look at the manual for information, but the manual says the sub should runs very cool even in idle. Most of time I could remember to turn off the hard power switch, but every now and then, I forgot and came back home with that annoying smell to deal with, and the heat sink on the back of the sub was so hot that it could literally fry an egg.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

C.I.

No, I'd definitely say that's not normal. Call Polk on Monday at the number in the top right corner. If it's under warranty, they'll take care of you. Those are great subs and mine have never had that issue.

Oh yeah, welcome to CP! :)

Thanks for the information. It is good to know that this is not normal. The sub is only 3 month old and is within warranty period. I will call Polk on Monday.

I also found out the subwoofer still draws 0.6A current when switched off, which rounds up to a continuous 70W power consumption. I guess that is why all the heat was generated.

My Micropro 1000, which is the same amp as your 2000, draws .34 amps and 25 watts when idle. If you got your .6 amp reading from a power conditioner display it might not be accurate. I think the minimum value that my power conditioner displays is .6 amps. I got the .34 amp reading using the Kill-a-watt meter.

It sounds like a bad voltage regulator....just do what you're planning on doing, you'll be fine.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

Thanks all for the replies. Just a little update.

I called Polk customer support. A replacement amplifier was sent to me immediately, and I got it today. Called customer service again and was given the instruction to switch the amplifier.

The repair was very easy and was done in about 20 minutes. I have deliberately left the sub idling for several hours and just checked it a couple of minutes ago. No smell anymore. It gets warm, but not hot like before. Kudos to Polk for the excellent customer service!
