My tv got smoked last week, along with a few other things, by a lightning strike, and I need to replace it.
It's going to be 40", 1080p, 120hz(hopefully) LCD.
As they say in Chicago, vote early and often:eek::D

Each brand has some good ones and some bad ones. Any idea on a budget? What type of room? Bright windows? Dim basement?

I'm still a Panny Plasma guy. I see lots of these new LCDs that are supposed to have realistic blacks, but the plasmas always look better to me. Smoother, more realistic, better motion (yes, even with the 120 or 240Hz LCDs). If you are doing any off angle viewing (more than 10 or 15 degrees R or L of center), then plasma will trump any LCD. LCDs loose contrast and color accuracy as you go off center.

Prolly should have mentioned WHY it cant be >40": Nothing else will fit the entertainment stand. As far as budget, eh <$700? It's replacing a 5 y.o. 32" 720p lcd.
    I don't need super highend.

How far away are you going to sit?
    What is your budget?
Tell me about the room you wanna put it in?
What about wall mounting or on top of furniture?

I gotta tell you from experience and not to mention I am ISF certified. I prefer Plasma every day of the week due to the fact I can calibrate a plasma where as LCD does not come in most of the time. Not to mention terrible off axis viewing sucks and Motion blur is terrible on all LCD sets. They try to get it close with higher refresh rates but it don't come close to a quality Plasma. Still to this day , Pioneer Elite last models still can't be beat.
Look into the best Panasonic Plasma you can afford or the new LG Inifini series. They are also very nice. THX models are IFS Calibrate-able.

Time to think about a different stand. 40" is very limiting. If you eyesight is poor, a larger image will be even more beneficial! 50" plasmas are often coming in under $1000 these days.

Pauly, Toshiba just introduced a 3D TV which does not require glasses. I am very curious... But I don't like Toshiba flat panels - everything looks too cartoon-ish, even after calibration - the colours are way oversaturated on them.

Why do people still consider Kuro the best thing around??

Last series of Pioneer plasmas used Panasonic panels and were excellent TVs. Then Pioneer stopped making plasmas and sold Kuro technology to Panasonic. The 2010 Pannies come with Kuro technology - it's called Infinite Black.

So if you are to buy a modern Panasonic plasma (G or V series) you will get next-generation panel (compared to Pioneer) WITH Kuro technology.

My son bought a 46 inch LG LED 240hz TV and it is awesome. I love my Sony 52 inch LCD as well. I have two Philips LCD TVs and I really dislike them. Price was good though.

Thank you all for participating. I ended up going with a Samsung 40" LCD 60 hz, 1080p. It was on sale @ BB for $675, which is $225 LESS than what I paid for my 32" 5 years ago:o
They had some tv's set up with split screens, showing the difference between 60 & 120 hz......Couldn't see it?
Like I said, my eyes suck:p

I've got about 3/8" on either side of the tv. If I had gone with the Sony, it may not have fit:eek:

And no, the PQ isn't as bad as the photos look. My camera was set on 'simple' mode

LOL, that was part of an 'upgrade' I made at Tweeter. Really long, and confusing story.

And no, Leroy, those are Def Tech Mythos STS's. Those are my front's and my Monitor 60's are the backs, then I've got a PSW303 under one of the end tables for a 5.3 set-up. I was just listening to Roger Waters In the Flesh dvd, and I LOVE my set-up.:D
