They're confused now. Even more so than before.

Good job. You might also want to move the FRs closer together. This could lower any IM distortion and blend the waves a little better.

    IMHO and readings:
Drop any extra electrical connections. Zobels (notch filters) can be good, but usually do more harm than good for OB/IBs. Let them puppies sing.
Attach an extra blanket across the back. This should help with bass as the baffle is kinda small.
Try putting them on a their side, top, etc.
A little foam between the whizzer and cone ($.98 tweak) should tame most mid-high problems.
A couple of coats of thinned Damar (Dammar?) will benefit most cheap FRs, but I wouldn't dream of trying it on Fostex, Jordan or Lowther. It's available at most craft stores. I've got mine.
GM is "the man" for all things FR. There are deffinately a bunch of others there though. Thor, Hitsware, eehaah, Godzilla (that's why I'm Ski over there), Steven Brown (who just sent me an e-mail regarding 12 - 8"ers), Jim Griffin (the line-array guru), etc.
Mix and match all your gear to get the lowest noise and crank it up. Use whatever sounds quietest for demo purposes.
Placement! With the open back it is especailly paramount.

Have fun! This is what it's about. Once you're hooked you'll get the extras that you never thought possible.

    Good luck,
    Ski

    Liv4fam,
I don't know what he is building....he must be bored or just having fun.......whatever you know........

    faster100,
If I recall on another thead.....Russ made a dickhead song correct???Looks to me like he supports dickhead things....he's probably eating this all up with a smile.

    Ok,

If you don't know what he is building, why not either pay attention and maybe learn something of if it doesn't interest you, move on. I find this very interesting, actually. When I get home, I'd like to experiment with this myself....

As far as Russ goes, this is a fairly serious post, IMO. As far as dickhead things, would that be like when Russ was unemployed and you and your partner ridiculed him for being unemployed through no fault of thier own?

Lastly, all I did was point out the facts about your opinions of the DQ-10. You've never heard them so you really can't make an intelligent statement about them.

So, I take it you didn't close on the house on the 21st?

Good morning (or Night I guess) TD...

Just fired up the DQ's testing some ebay stuff and sounding verrrrry nice... Had to move them against the wall due to space limits in my test area. Imaging is off a bit, but the bass... much more oomph there as I guess would be expected.

Anyway thought Russ might want to play with his project's distance from the wall some. Have you ever put yours tight to the wall?

    Troy,
Answer me just this......Is it ok for you and Russ to be dickheads but not me???

I asked you to stop with the house thing and you couldn't respect that..I talked to Russ about being unemployed,I have him my respect something I feel you lack.

My house is a very depressing time for not only me but my family. We are going to get legal help.I called for a meeting with the builder and the realitor......there are 7 couples involved in our side of the street. There is 11 more houses(which I was just told lastnight)going in on the other side of the street.I thought I was going to be 9...
We have had more closing dates then I want to talk about.I'm sick to my stomach. You must really hate me to want to kick me there constantly. That makes you a complete **** jerk off.
It would be like me making comments about your wife..but out of respect I don't go there. It's not in my nature to pick on people where it hurts the most.Your speakers......and carver gear......**** it,it's **** gear....at the end of the day gear isn't what matters..who really gives a **** as much as I love this hobby,it hold absolutely no water to family.

If you want to talk about my house with concern,I'm fine with that.....don't try to **** me with it.

I'm only going to ask this of you one more time....leave the house thing out of it.Pick on my spelling,Intelligence,my system,or anything else, leave my horrible experience with building my first new house out of it.

As far as this thead........Russ is having fun building his speaker plate, thing or whatever it is.....DIY projects aren't my thing....so what.I don't have the time to get involved in those activities....he does.If it blows up the skirts and smiles come out......I say do it up.It's funny looking admit it.It's a plywood sheet with drivers cut into it.I talked to Russ about speakers he was building I had a completely different vision.I'm not going to support it or knock it.....I'm simply going to leave it alone.

It is amazing what a difference the right amount of 'space' can make. So far, about 2/2.5 feet from the rear wall. They dont seem to be as picky with the side walls.

If I pull them out to 3-4 ft, everything starts radiating sound, the sound is 'all over the place'. It's cool to hear it, just to hear, but nothing you'd want to get intimate with.

Flip the ship around the other direction, and put them within a ft of the rear wall, bass tightens up, but the soundstage absolutley collapses.

    Cheers,
    Russ

Yup... and as big of a factor as it is with the DQ's, it's even more so with the maggies. Again makes sense since the DQ woofer is enclosed whereas the maggies are swide open... as are your little play projects.

Funny thing is the CA's manual says to put them right up on the wall.. haven't done that with them yet.

Damn battles are flying through every thread now... Think I'll propose sometihing over in Off Topic...

    Dan,

I apologize, I didn't mean to hit a nerve. I assumed that you were closing on the 21st. My apologies.

    Back on topic....

I've found with the DQ's that in my room, about 15" works best for spacing. Anyting closer and the imaging and soundstage really starts to head south...

I guess I should've stated new. That rig would be damn near impossible to beat for a grand. It might be possible, but it would be very dependant on preference, demo material and room size/acoustics.

The only reason I would challenge you is because this looks like something I might build and you scoffed at it.

Russ... open vs. infinite... ya, I think I called your design "quasi-IB"... true IB has the front of the driver COMPLETELY isolated from the rear, like having the driver face into a room, but the rear opens into the garage or attic or basement. A cabinet that is 4x Vas... have to be a pretty small driver or VERY large box.

I know you aren't.. but don't sweat the naysayers. Anyone with cash (or credit) can *buy* a great system... in fact, the S&V "System Showcase" or whatever it was called used to be a big joke.. nothing more than some guy with too much $$ having paid an installer and carpenter. Same problem with Bob Vila's brand of home improvement - hire it done, money no object.

I could have $5000 speakers in my house, and could still spend an afternoon listening to a $5 pair of garage sale speakers.. just to listen... just because.

In high school, I was a projectionist at the local drive-in, and we made a pair of "Bose 901s" out of extra drive-in speakers.. 4" round full-range .... 9 of them... screwed into plywood... They were less expensive than real 901s.

Anyway.. three cheers for the DIY spirit. Building speakers provides great perspective on what you're actually getting and paying for with commercial speakers... and where you're wasting money.
