Perhaps your other half can request another batch of 5?Trying out Different Audio Cables is a Religious Affair. You don't discuss it with anyone.:biggrin:

I'll keep that option open for a future project:D.Your 2 and the 5 samples will give me 7 so I'll just add one to my Digi Key order. -
For curiosity, I registered with National Semi and tried to order some samples free.
They now charge for S&H fees for the samples. 15 years ago, they sent samples to any country without a cent for S&H for any sample request.
But the S&H is not much at all. It's only what you would have to pay to the Newark or Digi-key for S&H.Trying out Different Audio Cables is a Religious Affair. You don't discuss it with anyone.:biggrin: -
I signed up and my order is confirmed but is "under review".No S&H charges indicated yet but I think Kelvin paid a small fee.

Yes I paid S&H. Under $10.00 if I recall. I also had my son order some samples and ended up with 10 total. I use 6 in the Carver dropped and squished one by accident and should have 3 left but can only find two for some reason. I'd send them your way Fred but I'm planning on upgrading an old Entech number cruncher DAC I have.
As for the C-1, it sounds fantastic. Even without the caps done. Smooth and detailed with seemingly bottomless controlled bass extension. The phono section just shines on low output MC or on MM. I currently have my Kenwood 2055 (with the faux marble base) hooked up with a Grado Prestige Gold cart and it really sounds nice. I just missed out on an ebay auction for an AT OC9/II which I'd love to try in the MC section but for now my Sony MC3 (new old stock) sounds amazing. That old Sony moving coil was a fantastic find and just can't be beat for the price. $179. It just blew my old Denon 160 away in detail and extension. It was a gamble buying it as it was new in '86 or so but the rubber on the cantilever was still good and really sounds fantastic. Boron cantilever and nude fine line stylus 10-50k hz with >35 dB channel seperation. Too bad they never lasted. Sony really did make some good stuff way back when.
Whoops, I hijacked my own thread. Sorry me.SDA-1C (full mods)

Did he get to assist dad with this project?:mad:Ouch!Nice little DAC.Many moons ago I DIY'ed a DAC using that same Crystal CS8412/4329 chip set and a BB/OPA2604 for the analog section. It sounded very nice IMO.
Yeah the phono section in particular will benifit greatly from the lower noise of the 4562.
Yes, my son did assist me and appreciates the difference the upgrade made. I have discovered the Crystal 4329 which is a 20 bit/ 48kHz dac is pin for pin compatible with the 4390 chip which is 24 bit / 96kHz. I've got one coming from China that I bought on ebay (hoping it's not fake) The burr/brown may stay as I'm not positve the two op amps are pin compatible yet. Need to do more research. And yes, the lower noise of the 4562 is very (not) noticable. One other thing I've noticed though, badly mastered LP's sound even worse now. My set up now is very revealing of both good and bad recordings.SDA-1C (full mods)

Yep the 4390 superseeded the 29, and IIRC correctly was co developed with Meridian who used the these Crystal DAC's in their highly regarded CD players of the 90's.However your CS8412 input reciever IC will limit you to 16/48.
The LM4562 will be pin compatable with any of the BB dual opamps such as the OPA2604 and 2134. -

Is there any upgrade to the CS8412 that will allow the 4390 to work at it's full potential?SDA-1C (full mods)

The good news ,comparing the data sheets of the CS8412 and 8414 show them to have identical pinouts. The bad news is that you will likely need to change the designation of the mode pins to get it to operate at the desired 24/96k.
Also a simple mod to the PLL filter will be needed.(changing the value of one resistor and one capacitor).I believe Aries and BrownDog will have the appropriate 28pin DIP-SOIC adaptors. Sourcing the 8414 may be abit tricky as it is apparently out of production. -
I've found a couple of 8414 adapter boards on ebay. One has the chip already soldered on to the adapter and another comes as a kit with adapter pcb, chip, and pins. They are both from China (or Hong Kong). What do you think Fred?

Nice finds. It's hard to say for sure if the IC's are legit but the date codes would indicate they are NOS.I'd bet they are the real deal but at the price it would be worth a try IMO.I would opt for the assembled one unless your very comfortable with your soldering skills and want to try your hand at SMD.
