Synopsis
BLACK SWAN follows the story of Nina (Portman), a ballerina in a New York City ballet company whose life, like all those in her profession, is completely consumed with dance. She lives with her retired ballerina mother Erica (Barbara Hershey) who zealously supports her daughters professional ambition. When artistic director Thomas Leroy (Vincent Cassel) decides to replace prima ballerina Beth MacIntyre (Winona Ryder) for the opening production of their new season, Swan Lake, Nina is his first choice. But Nina has competition: a new dancer, Lily (Kunis), who impresses Leroy as well. Swan Lake requires a dancer who can play both the White Swan with innocence and grace, and the Black Swan, who represents guile and sensuality. Nina fits the White Swan role perfectly but Lily is the personification of the Black Swan. As the two young dancers expand their rivalry into a twisted friendship, Nina begins to get more in touch with her dark side with a recklessness that threatens to destroy her.

Interesting take on a universal human theme--duality, contradiction, paradox. The twisted and contorted gaze that every human wrestles with inside their own self.
I haven't seen this but I'll definitely be checking this out...sorry for the overly reflexive digressions above.

I think some of you are getting a little too distracted by the ballerina stuff as if its some kind of chick flick. Maybe it ultimately will be, but I doubt it. Looks like it gets pretty intense. I'm intrigued by the evil chick (Portman) that's sproutin' wings out of her back.
What Aronofsky has done so far has been pretty good. -
She's preggers now, too.

saw this last night. It was just alright. Didn't love it or hate it. Portman was pretty damn good, and Kunis was gorgeous.

Watched this pile of garbage twice over the weekend and still can't figure out what the hell was going on through most of it.
If you insist on watching it, download it. Don't even pay for it with cable.
Oh and the Portman/Kunis scene was not all that exhilarating. The way all the nerds have been raving about it for 2 years now, I thought it was going to be soft core ****. It wasn't. It was just some shots of Mila Kunis licking Natalie Portman's stomach and Natalie Portman writing and gasping for breath like a dying fish on her bed.
The movie sucked. It was honestly "Swan Lake" where the "swans" (or at least the chick who turned in to a swan) were all replaced with ballet dancers performing "Swan Lake". The acting was pretty good. But the movie sucked.
Although, Winonna Ryder's character stabbing her face with a letter opener and screaming "NOTHING" was pretty creepy.Expert Moron Extraordinaire

Thanks for the bow shot. I hate watching long movies just waiting for something to become interesting, and then having to finish due to time invested, and then only to see credits rolling and me getting pissed for wasting two hours of my life when I could have been doing something else. Then again, some movies are slow to start and then become awesome midway through.
The girls are pretty. I see that all the time outside my window, all year long. I'll watch transformers 3 over and over again for the hot chic, but at least it has some action. I saw a youtube clip of the L scene. mmm. Just as a counterpoint (so that someone else considering watching it doesn't automatically assume it was a bomb), I thought it was superb. Saw it while it was still in theaters. Gives an inside look at the world of ballet and the stresses that it entails. More than anything else it is a character drama, following Portman's character as she is consumed by her obsession to do her best, all the while not really knowing what her ultimate motivation is, driving her to the brink of madness. If you're expecting soft-core **** or action, you will be disappointed.

I'm going to second the above opinion by Syndil. I think pretty much everything Aronofsky's done has turned out to be nothing short of stellar. wife acceptance factor
a/k/a SAF spouse acceptance factor (to avoid gender bias)
In the context of this forum - Large speakers tend to have low WAF. Mine would have very close to zero WAF, but Mrs. H is a saint. She has, however, opined with a straight face that she figures she'll employ one of mine as my coffin when that time rolls around....

That is cool!
yeah, SAF is better. Spouse, or Significant Other Acceptance Factor
SOAF!
Geesh, going on twenty hours of beer withdrawal and look what happens. My wife just brought home some Sam Adams Sampler last night, all gone, but all good.
By the way, the first time I heard of WAF was on this forum. It's a great term. I've since seen it elsewhere, but it is a great term to speak of when talking with friends and debating the success of certain ventures and you don't necessarily need to advertise the debate over WAF.Polk Audio SDA CRS+ crossover 4.1TL by Trey/VR3 (Rings and custom stand by Larry)-Polk Audio SDA SRS2 crossovers by Trey/VR3Parasound HCA1500aYamaha rxa-3070 with musicast-Celestion SL6S presence,- sl9 surround backNHTsuper1's surroundMagnepan SMGParasound 1500pre- Sofia "Baby" tube amp - Monitor Audio Silver RX2 Marantz 2230/B&Kst140Technics 1200mk2 Gamertag: IslandBerserker I am but a infinitesimally small point meeting the line of infinity in the SDA universe -

What a load of malarkey!
It had nothing to do with an "inside look at the world of ballet". If that had anything to do with the reality behind ballet then "Top Gun" is a freakin' documentary.
It was about some chick going batpoo insane and if I got anything from it, it wasn't ballet that drove her that way, it was her mom and her over-protection. But the movie jumped around to so many cut scenes from Nina's screwed up head to reality it was impossibly hard to follow because the contrast between Nina's reality and her fantasy was so stark and vast.
The movie was poorly done. I imagine that with different directing or better screenwriting it'd be a less film but at least it'd be understandable. Not even relatable, just understandable.
The movie is garbage. Chicks will dig it because even though their life has absolutely nothing to do with ballet and its "world" and they know nothing about it they will still identify with it and love it because it made them emotional.
At the bottom of it all, a movie is a story. Telling a story can have you confused by reality through out the story and then tie it all together at the end. This movie did not do that and even though the dumb broad died (you don't know that for sure because they cut to credits after the dumb broad mutters "I was perfect.") at the end, we are supposed to believe that Kunis' character played two parts in the story, Nina's foil and a physical representation of Nina's own, trapped psyche. However, all you ever see Kunis' character do to dissuade your belief that she actually is undermining Nina according to Nina's own fragile psyche is Kunis' character's weak denial of gettin' it on in her bedroom, laughter that Nina had a wet dream about her and then tells her (at what would be the story line climax) that she was wrong about Nina and she was pretty great. But, if you followed the broken and meandering story line through all the cut scenes and the hodge-podge of mental diarrhea that was the screenplay, you'd only believe that Kunis' character was lying and trying to undermine Nina still. Because of that, the story is unfulfilled. There is no ending there is no ah-ha moment. You think there is but the plot is not clear at all.
Does it have to be clear? No, it doesn't be. But given the imagery in the movie, I really don't get the intent that it was meant to be unclear. Because of that, I think, at best, this movie is unfinished. At worst, it's a pile of garbage that the director tried in a valiantly lame attempt to fornicate with the audience's mind. That mark was missed though and the "arrow", so to speak, flew wide of the mark and just disappeared off in to the distance.
But that said, the acting from Kunis and Portman was top notch all the way. Both were very convincing in their roles.
