Carver TFM-42 noise

Hey guys, when I turn on my amp I get a loud humming noise. The volume of the noise goes up and down, but it's pretty loud overall. I switched it out with a tfm-25 I have and the problem is gone so I know it's the amp.

So the question is, is there anything I can check? If not I'll have to put it away for a while as I can't afford to have it serviced anytime soon. Thanks in advance for any help/advice. Chris

Probably a power supply related issue. Unless you know what you are doing, have the schematics and various test equipment, there's nothing you can service yourself.

Jesse is almost certainly right on the money, but just in the off chance it could be a ground hum issue if the power cord has a 3 prong male end try a cheater plug just to see if that could be the issue.

Well, I just pulled off the impossible by doing a double-blind comparison all by myself, purely by virtue of the fact that I completely and stupidly forgot what I did last. I guess that getting old does have its advantages after all :D

no need for the cheater adapter the TFM42/45 only have a 2 prong plug. Could also be one of the cap's is bad my TFM45 had a buzz that when sent to service was a bad cap I had them replace all that shared the same circuit as the bad one

This amp was serviced at Rita's by the previous owner last June and had some caps and resistors replaced and a few other internal touch ups. Just missed the one year warranty haha. It's worse than a hum, It's like a loud feedback sound. Not the high pitched screeching feedback but still feedback sounding. This is with or without the preamp on and with or without music playing. Of course I didn't screw with it too long out of fear of damaging my speakers.

Either way Ohskigod, I always see people being referred to Rita's for Carver service. http://http://www.ritasvintageaudio.net/

I believe he charges a little more, but he's got orginal parts that no one else has and from what I hear, he does a better repair job.

Jesse is correct Rita is good but she just does not get as deep into it as Roland will. I have had some to Rita more than once for the same problem shipping is not cheap and my time without my gear is BS. Roland will do it right the first time with the finest parts which just might be way better that OEM. You hear it on here all the time a lot has changed in the Cap making for the better in the last 25-30 yrs.

    +1

I have used Rolland twice and in both cases very happy with the work.

I am not so sure that Rita's prices are any cheaper now but I always felt better sending my stuff to Rolland.

Try switching the polarity of the plug.
