Ipods Suck

So, I updated my Ipod Touch today with the 4.0.2 or whatever it was, then all of a sudden it will not reboot.
I have tried everything, had to send it out for repair.
Kind of upset...I used that on my rides to work.
I am curious why updating my firmware bricked my ipod?
Anyone have any ideas as to why it happened....or any fixes if it does happen again? I don't like sending things out...and would love to avoid it if I could.
Thanks.

Yes, I did. I have sent it out for repair, but they had no clue why it happened. I have looked a bit online and can't find anything...just was curious if anyone has had the problem like I did.
Or if anyone knows some quick fixes. The lady said I bricked the Ipod somehow, but we couldn't figure out why.
Like I could restore it but when it came for it to reboot it just didn't want to do it.
It was rather odd...to be honest.

The title of your thread may answer your questions. My 4 kids have owned 4 each since the iPod's inception and all have failed multiple times. I feel we've poured money down a rathole, with only the prospect of next years newest $300+ offering providing a short term solution. They are like crack as my kids feel they can't live without them.

Very true. I enjoy my Ipod alot, not to mention my wife bought it for me as a present and she was kind of upset that it didn't last much like I was.
Anyway, I appears that they do not last long like the Nanos did.
I had an Ipod Nano a 2 gig one, silver to be exact. I put that through and back, and then back again.
I bought it online from a guy for $40 back when they were coming out with Ipod Videos...he had owned it for about a year. It came in really nice condition. I used it for a year and a half, no problems. I dropped it, soaked it in water, swam with it practically... we even took a hammer to it, and a screw driver took off the metal casing and it still worked. Infact, it still works to this day, it is just a pain in the **** to do much since the screen does not work, but I still get great sound from it :D
Anyway, shame the touch was not like that...I mean I took car of the Touch, bought it a case and everything....

Consider how many times they were probably dropped and a number of other things. Any electronic is susceptible to hardware failure, but I doubt all 12 iPods in your family had manufacturing defects leading to failures.

I always get a kick out of how many of my friends break their cell phones and then **** about them. I ask them what they expect when they drop them or step on them....

Sucks you're dropping lots of money on the iPods....have you tried to buy Zune or something similar?

I had a Zune, I liked it quite a lot, but bought the Ipod due to the compatibility with almost everything....mainly, my car stereo could not play Zune....
But overall, aside from the resource sucking, memory and ram eating software they make you use that slows your computer into submission....it was not that bad at all.

Sorry for the derail, but I found this place very helpful when an update killed my wife's 5th gen iPod video. I ordered a new hard drive and they sent all the necessary tools and instructions to perform the swap. Highly recommended.

Or look at the older square-style Shuffles. Even a Nano is $150-180. Beats the **** out of $200-400 Touches. (if you know what I mean ;);)) Either way, if your kids can't handle technology, don't endlessly buy it for them. Either the tech's bad or the kid's irresponsible. And I'm saying that as a teenager myself--I've seen all too often that my peers will drop or throw or do any number of Really Stupid Things to get something new. I'm a bit biased as I went to a rather pricey private school for a few years, but it was simply ludicrous what they'd smash or throw 20' in the air and watch it and laugh as it breaks. Pocket tech is quite tough--it has to be. Cellphones and even iPods can take a remarkable amount of abuse.

I had one a 1st gen nano (maybe 2nd can't remember) and it just this month stopped working. Will still power on, its just the click wheel doesn't work anymore and I beat that thing to death, every day to class in below zero weather, to getting sweaty in the gym every day and it finally died about 5-6 years later I can't complain.

The problem the OP has can happen to anything really. Only happened once with my old ipod but just did a reset and it was fine.

Yeah, I guess Ipod just keeps making them with less care....the lady offered me 1 more year of apple care for 79.99 when I could not fix it. She said, if it happened once; it could happen again.
    Kind of discouraging you know?

I wouldn't say they make them with less care, they're just more complicated and more fragile. People talk about older things being more durable, they were also nowhere near as dense or compact. YOu want new technology, that's the price of it.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

My 60gig 4th is still working great as well. I'm not surprised to see kids iPods having a much shorter life. They put them in their back packs then toss and kick them at school (I see it everyday), not to mention general dropping of them just because they are kids.

One of my fellow teachers had her daughter buy her second Nano, because she abused the first one. Funny thing with the second one, it looks brand new after 2 years.

I have only owned refurbed Ipods and they are great for the price; they are perfect for travel and the gym. I never cared for using my iphone to listen to music because of the drain on battery. when I upgraded to 3.1.3 on my iPhone 3g, it lost wifi. It was out of warranty, but they replaced it for free (even though it was beat to crap). I wouldn't ever send my phone out for repair. Just take it to a store.

apparently, 3.1.3 broke a lot of iphones

My iphone 3gs is still on 3.1.2 because I cannot trust apple with their updates.

I heard it "broke" the jailbreak... not the phone/mp3 player. It just unjailbreaks it... like most updates do. However, idk why anyone would update to 4.0.2. The only thing it did was stop the jailbreak (apple is so stupid in this respect)

We bought our daughter an ipod Touch a few months ago. She uses it, hours and hours a day...takes it everywhere. As far as I KNOW it has not been 'dropped'--I gave her a bit of tough talk on taking care of a 300 dollar unit. When I was her age I had to lobby for a 10 dollar 11 Transistor AM radio so I could listen to tunes from NYC? My most prized possession as a kid. How times have changed.

I was in a Dept. Store today where I heard 'Dad here's a ipod touch...it's only...' A young teenage girl.

I hear you I-sports...kids can be pretty reckless. My cheapo MP3/4 device (50 dollars/4 gigs) is now almost 2 years old and still running?

My daughter saved up birthday money and did extra chores for months to save up for an IPOD touch. I bought her a case. She is also on it constantly. No songs yet. She seems to just play games and surf on it. She has been asking me if I can help her update it but now I think I won't. I would hate to turn her prized possession into a brick.:(

You might wanna update it while it's still under warranty. If it turns out bad, they will simply replace it. I'd rather have a unit that can be upgraded without fear of it being screwed up...besides, getting a brand new one is always cool :)

Now, if it's jailbroken, obviously don't take it to 4.0.2 until there is a new jailbreak

I've had an old archos 20 gig player for years (like 6) and it worked until I busted the LCD... it still works, you just can't see what you're doing.

I, however, have had to replace my iphone (either 3gs or 3g) 5 times in the last 2 years. I don't really think apple makes quality, but they usually support it. I've only had to pay for a replacement one time... and when I called CS, they said the store shouldn't have made me pay for replacement that time. The only good things apple has going is, customer service = "here's a new one" and they take old technology and throw it in a very nice looking package :)

Well, I just pulled off the impossible by doing a double-blind comparison all by myself, purely by virtue of the fact that I completely and stupidly forgot what I did last. I guess that getting old does have its advantages after all :D

That's something I've heard quite often. I received my 4th Gen iPod Nano 16GB like 2 years ago as a freshman in college. The screen is almost pristine, the edges are a little chipped (thank Steve Jobs for aluminum), but it's overall still in good working condition. I'm thinking of replacing the battery sometime soon, but it's not a huge priority.
