L.A. Stakeout

I moved to L.A. in my late 20s...generally, I like it here but aside from the traffic one of the more annoying things is the near-weekly occurrence of police helicopters circling about. Typically, this might last 15 or 20 minutes. When they're overhead, the noise is such that you feel they're about to land on your rooftop.

Well, today has been exceptional. I first started to hear a helicopter above us at about 2:30pm local time. Now, its about 5:20 and its still circling overhead. Noting that this was longer than usual, I headed down to see what the fuss was about. Well, there's an intersection with a 7-11 on the corner right across the street. I noticed that there were about 7 police cars and they had blocked off the main boulevard (Barrington Ave). I stayed on my side of the street, but during the 10 minutes I was down there I saw them cuff a guy, ask him a series of questions, jot the answers down in a little pad, and then release him. Just before I headed back up I saw four more police vehicles speeding to the scene: two regular police cars with two white police vans sandwhiched in between.

When I came back to my apartment complex I overheard one of my neighbors whose place is closer to the street remark that a gun shot was heard. Maybe the 7-11 was robbed? Well, whatever the case they're still looking for the suspect(s) and have determined that he/they are sitting tight, having blocked off traffic in all directions.

Anybody else been close to a police stakeout before?

I hope they find the guy(s) of course...and I hope it happens sooner rather than later. The helicopter flying overhead at this low altitude is driving me batty

eh not really. Once had a been walking home from a house party and had a guy ran past me and my gf at the time and pushed us out of the way. Next thing 3 cop cars are flying past us and one stops and ask if we've seen a guy and point in his direction. We walk down the block to see the cops take off on foot and then they see the guy and tackle him to the ground.

apparently he shot someone and was trying to run from the cops...on foot.

    Yeah.

A few years ago, we had a renter (we don't get a lot renters here) who's son created quite a bit of problems for our quiet little neighborhood hoa (one dead end street with two cul de sac's). we're a pretty tight group so we got the cops involved quite frequently. One of their requests was to call if we saw suspicious activity and to not be afraid to politely ask people we didn't know if they needed any kind of help.

One day one of the neighbors saw a vehicle with a person in it that looked out of place in our neighborhood, so she asked if she could help this person. The person flashed a badge, told her to go inside her house, and that she'd know when it was alright to come back out.

He was right, about a half hour later, more cops showed up, and the cops went in and dragged the kid and one of his friends out of the house in handcuffs. The family who rented the house moved out shortly after that.
My equipment sig felt inadequate and deleted itself.

At least they didn't wake you up in the middle of the night.

I was living down the street from Phil Spector the night he shot his date in the face. All the news helicopters decided to hover right above my house! It started at about 2:00 am and lasted for hours.

    It sucked!

I called the police to complain and they said they had no jurisdiction and that I should call the FAA!

They would come back and hover at different points during the trial and it became a real pain the ****.

Many years ago, my roommate and I were out eating dinner and were heading back to our apartment only to find the path blocked by a SWAT van and several patrol cars so we went to the movies instead. Strangely, it never made the news nor did we care enough to ask our neighbors.
