New York City. Like I mentioned before, I can't get around much on account of my injuries, but in time I suppose I could get myself to something like a J&R or PC Richardson.

Yeah, some of the smaller shops will take the time to set things up for you and swap around items. Only if you find the time though.

As far as the whole amplifier thing goes. Not all AVRs have quality power resulting in non-quality sound. Pre-outs give you options down the roads. You don't "need" them but its something you should look for because it typically isn't going to cost you extra. Down the road you might find you like tube amps vs solid state. Or pure Class A solid state amps vs AB, B and D etc. I guess this stuff is something you may never do but who knows. The hobby is new to me but I can't wait to hook up some different types of amps to my AVR to hear how they sound.

    fallennomad..

Most BBs do not have even their AVRs set up properly. I've heard that same Yamaha (and I'm not a fan of Yammie lower models) with the same speakers and it sounded better than anything else next to them (bookshelves). Which is not to say that you'd be happy with entry bookshelves.

The extra amp power is MOSTLY necessary for LSIs since they present a 4 ohm load that MOST AVRs CANNOT handle properly. So if you went with LSis--pre-outs are necessary. That series really needs GOOD power to open up!

The HK is the AVR254...look for it on HK's ebay site...but you won't ALWAYS find it. It's a waiting game of sorts?

J&R carries Rti and LSi lines...I'm sure you could demo some there?

I'd stick with Zeros suggestions, though, if you have a tight budget!

    Good Listening!

I guess I will be heading out to a J&R sometime in my near future! In the meantime, I just want to thank everyone for their help, I learned a lot :D

Good point about the pre-amps...better to be prepared for the future.

I just read something about full-range speakers. That sounds like a safe bet: I wouldn't have to rely on the sub for mids and lows like it happens to worse speakers. Is that something I should look for, or is that just overkill?
