Polk Audio 10" DSW Sub Problem

My Polk Audio 10" DSW has developed a major problem. I'm trying to figure out if it's the amp, or the driver.

The sub sub emits a loud popping/crackling sound instead of bass. I've looked at the driver and I don't see any physical damage.

Thanks for the help.

The sub doesn't pop if I remove the cable.

I'll try hooking it up directly tonight and see what happens.

I hooked up the sub directly and to my sat receiver and I get the same thing. Real scratchy, loud, popping bass. I tried another sub and that worked fine.

Does this sound like the voice coil, or the sub's internal amp?

Is there a way I can hook it up to bypass the internal amp?

    Thanks for the help.

Sounds like a problem with the amp. Most likely the reason that you don't hear the problem when the sub is completely disconnected is that the auto power on isn't getting tripped. Try unplugging the line-in connection after you start hearing the noise to be sure. Or attach another input and see if you get the same sound.

Does the volume of the sound change when you adjust the sub's volume control?

Would you characterize it as a loud buzzing/crackling sound or just popping/crackling?

Yes, the volume of the noise changes as I increase the volume on the sub. The sound is the normal bass, just very distorted sounding. If I unplug the line in, it stops. It's like the sub is producing bass at the proper times, it's just very distorted sounding. Kind of a popping/crackling bass.
