Do subs have to match with the speakers?

Does it matter what type / brand of sub I use with my Monitor series speakers or does it sound a better balance if you stick with the recommended sub?

No it doesn't have to match. The more money you spend the better.

Speaker companies make matching subs to most of there speakers. Over the years I have found that matching subs play nice in ones system.
Now on the other hand I have mixed and matched many times and found better quality subs to blend in with just about any quality speakers.
Velodyne is a sub company I have a lot of experience with and found them to mate with everything I ever paired up with them. Sometimes they are not the most musical especially when you also carry Rel , but I find them to be the best well rounded subs on the market. You can't go wrong with any of their subs.
With Monitor series Polk speakers , the PSW line of Polk subs will work great. No reason to get all crazy and spend a lot. Under 1000.00 will be great.
The comment about more you spend you get more ,with subs that's very true. Not many budget subs can come close to the performance of the bigger higher priced models.

My personal quest is to save to world of bad audio, one thread at a time. -
I would have to say yes and no. It all depends on your speakers.
Yes it will matter if you have small speakers that say only go down to lets say 150hz then you should find a sub that reach up to at least 150. You would not want to have any audio holes in your music.
If you have fuller range speakers and just want the 30hz and down to rock the house then no you will not need to worry about matching the sub.Sunfire TGP, Sunfire Cinema Grand, Sunfire 300~2 (2), Sunfire True Sub (2),Carver ALS Platinum, Carver AL III, TFM-55, C-19, C-9, TX-8, SDA-490t, SDA-390t -
+1, Size does matter and satellites can be a bit more temperamental then most full range floorstanders which can be crossed over much LOWER.

No.
Apparently I have to post more BS because I can't just answer your question to which the answer is "No". Don't think that you have to spend more either, that's just plain out a fib. No in a short answer. You could even have a DIY and be fine.

Nope, go with best fits your budget and room. The brand doesn't have to match.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

The only reason speakers need to be matched is because humans are more sensitive at mid-range and high frequency so it's preferable that all speakers in you system have the same midrange and tweeter.
With sub woofers - they reproduce frequency that's mostly outside of the range of your speakers and additionally it's all low frequency where timbre matching is not important. Like people suggested go with the best sub you can afford, because while you might have an urge to upgrade your electronics or even speakers, once you get a nice powerful musical sub, there is no reason to ever upgrade. -
