I think you can learn two things from this thread:

    1) For your benefit, ask for opinions before ordering the computer.
    2) For everyone else's benefit, just don't ask for opinions.

As mentioned above go to Best Buy, hate to see you get burnt on this one.

Please don't go to best buy.

If you're gonna go with a large manufacturer, either: order straight from dell,hp, ect, order dell's refrub stuff (real cheap), or use newegg or buy.com. You can get that pc for half the price or get something really nice for that price.

I think I said that in my initial post. I even quoted a price on there after customizing an Inspirion model. Best Buy carries the big box PCs if you cannot afford the wait time.

    Oh, sorry.

Yes, they do. But they also put a markup on them. I figured if she was already ordering a custom pc, she could afford the time in the mail. Doesn't dell guarantee you'll get your PC in a week or something?

Not sure about time frame. I have a new XPS laptop that I use for a field PC and it is great. I did purchase through direct ordering, and have had no problems minus a hard drive they replaced loaded upon arrival.

What about Tigerdirect.com? Thanks to the good folks here at CP I ordered a laptop from them. Obviously a laptop is smaller than a pc, but it was shipped out the next day (I ordered in the evening) and at our front door 3 days later. This was my only transaction with them but the price, service and the quality was very good. I'll be going back there for future purchases.

    They are good too.

On the subject of laptops, a laptop would be a good choice. Back in the day, the reason you bought a desktop instead of a laptop was that you got more for your money. While this is still the case, it is much less so now. Unless you do gaming, buying a laptop is smart. You can get all the specs you need (better than the desktop) for what she was gonna pay for the desktop. Also you can plug in an external monitor and use bluetooth mouse/ keyboard and it would be used like a desktop. But when you wanted to go somewhere.... woohoo, freedom.

Wow cant believe I missed this one earlier :D

First off Cathy dont hate me for what im about to say...... this is the first time where I have ever seen you act like a female IMHO making a decision that flies in the face of logic and reason.

You have to realize that you "ASKED" for oppinions well you got em, obviously one or two things have occured here one may be that you have allready paid for this PC and you are now trying to justify lackluster parts and performance in any way you can or perhaps you wanted us to be happy for you and say Congrats and now are dissapointed that it didndt go as planned.

You mention that having a warranty is important to you even though on your last PC you didnt need it till after the warranty had ran out and that having it assembled in the USA is important. Well You can buy a Dell that is assembled in the USA that has far better parts for the same or even less money or have one of the fellows here assemble you one that is better for less money.

I am typing this on a $275.00 actually $175.00 after a mail in rebate Dell that was made in 2004 and I have never had one single problem with, not a single virus absolutley zero down time and it is running as fast as the day I bought it. I am on my 4th or 5th keyboard and my 5th or 6th mouse so obviously I spend more time than I probally should online :p in fact the only time this PC has been off it was due to a power outage other than that it has been powered on 24/7 for over 6 years.

Neither myself or the other posters here are trying to make you feel bad we are only trying to help you because we care about you.

Whatever you do Congrats on the new PC.

    REGARDS SNOW
Well, I just pulled off the impossible by doing a double-blind comparison all by myself, purely by virtue of the fact that I completely and stupidly forgot what I did last. I guess that getting old does have its advantages after all :D

Hah. I wouldn't say that. If you want an honest opinion, sure, post. If you've completely made up your mind and are totally and 100% freakishly attached to the item that you are going to buy.. don't. :D

Tennessee does tax free weekend too... and the consumers go crazy. Never seen a bigger lot of dumbasses. People crowding into malls to pay FULL price so they can get 9.25% off. They could just go on any other day and shop sales (20-50%) and make out much better. That's people though.

The value to ME is that these pc's are put together here in Massachusetts. I know that I'm paying a premium for that, and if the first one that I bought 12 years ago had been a peice of crap, I most definately would have gone someplace else for my other machines.

They have been in business here in MA for over 24 years, they must be doing something right.

When on the rare occurance (virus & video card) something went wrong I was able to hop into a cab or have a friend drive me to Cambridge where they fixed the problems. I only had to pay for parts & not labor.

For me it was worth the extra money paid up front to not have the hassles after purchase. And the quality of the machines have more than proven themselves.

They out grew their tiny facility in Cambridge & now reside in Norwood. While I just can't hop into a cab & get to them, I'm not worried about needing to do so since I've only had to go back twice for repairs in the 12 years that I have used them for my pc needs.

Some of you **** & moan about Polk speakers being made in China. Well my computers are assembled here in the good ol U. S. of A! I think it's worth the extra price don't you?

    Tell me what you think.

To be fair you asked and people are giving you an honest answer. If your happy with the purchase, why ask people's opinion's? If your happy with the computer you're getting enjoy it and don't 2nd guess. If being assembled in Mass. is worth double the cost or more for an older processor, etc. then great.

I have a 9 year old Dell assembled in China that has run pretty much 24/7 and not a single solitary issue. I would buy one again and pay about $550 for twice the machine your getting for $850.

Hey Cathy, did you look into Apple at all?

After seeing my neighbors Apple rig he got a few months ago I'm sold, best thing, only powercords to deal with, the entire rig is 100% wireless.

I hate computers but their a necessary evil so the simpler the better for me.

Oh come on man, between dropping those little screws and installing the OS, it's gotta take at least an hour.... half of it is spent at lunch waiting for W7 to load... but hey, their time is worth $300 an hour, right?

Loading W7? PC makers generally load images, takes another five to ten minutes.

Just to add another voice to the choir, that computer was a rip-off. And no, guys, that Pentium G6950 is NOT dated--it's just as obsolete as every other Intel Core i_ dual-core. It's low-end, but it's still a new generation processor.

Still, for the price you paid, you bent over a desk and took it without lube. Some high school kid could have built a similar computer, including monitor, for $600--or less.

Advice to everyone, including other computer junkies: ASK FOR AN OPINION BEFORE YOU BUY. Even if you think the deal's fantastic, ask someone who builds computers first.

Ding. While I agree with the general consensus, this isn't an obsolete machine that is being built. It's cost/performance ratio is out of whack, but the only issues I see are a lack of a dedicated video card (for the price), a PSU that prevents any future upgrades, and Windows 7 32-bit. You really should be getting 64 bit with the amount of RAM you will be running.

EDIT: I have to ask, are they throwing in any extra software that you haven't mentioned? Office, Photoshop, or something along those lines? If they are, that might justify the price tag depending on what actually is thrown in. What version of W7 are you getting, or do you know?

Regardless of how you look at it, the cost/performance does not add up. For the price paid she should be in a quad core rig, with it running Windows 7 on a 700gb - 1tb HDD. Simple as that.
