I can't get my printer to print a .pdf file with windows 7 64 bit. I have re-installed acrobat reader twice. I've tried other .pdf programs. I've re-installed the printer drivers. I'm losing it here. Someone please help.

    Can you be more specific?

In word, that printer shows up and you print, correct?

In Acrobat, what happens? are you unable to select the printer, does it say that it's printing and then fails, or ????

How far in the 'print process' do you get?

Does the print screen even come up prior to printing? (The one that allows you to choose portrait/landscape/# of copies etc)

Check the security settings of the doc it may not allow printing.

go Ctrl+D then click the security tab, Look under "Document Restrictions Summary" that should tell you if printing is allowed. If it isn't your screwed i don't anyway you can print a restricted pdf.

If that's the case, and the document is small enough, you can use print screen to capture each page, then create a new PDF and OCR it. Or there are some OCR programs that should be able to copy the text without going through the screenshots, ect.

I'm sorry, I omitted the important part. Any .pdf doc I try to print I get the error message "Before you can perform print-related tasks such as page setup or printing a document, you need to install a printer". And yes, it will print any other type of document. I have tried changing the default printer to the adobe PDF converter and to the Microsoft XPS Document Writer but nothing works. Adobe even has a Win7 64 bit specific driver that does not work. Thanks guys.

Have you installed any updates recently (for anything)? Is this your first time trying to print in Acrobat?

When you reinstalled the printer drivers, did you use the installer file, or did you go into devices and printers and manually remove the device?

Do you have an original file that you possibly converted to this PDF?

I have had this problem where the PDF is viewable, but won't print correctly. Creating a new PDF worked.

Ah, I read on and see your problem is unique and quite strange grasshoppa....

I googled that error message. It seems to be fairly common with adobe programs(though I've never experienced it). It seems to happen either after an update, after a new printer install, or if a default printer isn't set (which is odd, because I thought in Windows 7/Vista there is ALWAYS a default printer, even if its the XPS document writer).

The general solutions are setting a default printer, completely removing and reinstalling the printer drivers, deleting print spooler files and restarting the spooler, or finding a different printer driver.

yes, unique to me. googling = good.

He's tried most of the purported solutions it seems.

Maybe get it out of pdf format if that's the one freaking out.

One thing I've noticed in the past with Adobe Reader (especially when it is in a browser), sometimes if you try to use the print icon, it gives an error, but if you go File>Print, it works fine.

No, you don't want the defaut printer to be adobe PDF converter, you want it to be your Canon. To Adobe, print means to make a document, not necessarily a paper one.
Just make sure in the Adobe print dialog that the Canon is the printer it is sending it to.

    Canon as default...no work
Using print from file menu....no work
    Everything above tried.....no work

Ready to gouge eyeballs out with a windows 7 retail box and a couple of canon cartridges. Frustrated is a serious understatement.

Have you tried DIFFERENT drivers (meaning, not the ones that Canon thinks are best suited)?

Have you tried a generic driver? Have you tried a different PDF program? Have you deleted the spooler files out of Win\sys32 and restarted the spooler in services.msc? Have you removed all printers, restarted, then added the printer manually, while manually selecting the .inf file for the driver? Have you tried booting with BARE MINIMUM services/applications to see if anything is interfering?

That's unfortunate. I've had no problems with Win 7 64bit. I've installed it on 4 machines so far with nothing issues other than having to upgrade to newer versions of a few applications.

Yes, no, need more informations, yes, no. Will try a couple suggestions later. I have to go to a ball tournement in a few minutes. Where precisley are the spooler drivers and how do I restart the spooler in services.msc?

    Thanks again.

BTW I've tried cutePDF and it didn't work either.

You think it's Adobe's 64bit version of Reader? I wonder if he downloaded the 32bit version and tried that.
I feel for you, Kelvin, I'm no big fan of Adobe, ftm.

Ok, I've finally fixed this. Here's what I did. Uninstalled the printer, uninstalled Adobe reader, then did a repair install of Windows 7, reinstalled the printer, reinstalled Adobe Acrobat reader. Everything works like normal again. Clearly something in Windows was preventing it from working properly. This was after trying every suggestion listed above and several others I found on the web. I did a system restore, scanned for virus' spyware and malware. This really the only major problem I've faced with Win 7 so far. Thank you all for the suggestions and input. I almost lost my mind over this one.

I just had the same problem after installing a new printer in Windows 7. I read this post and managed to find a very quick and easy fix.

All you need to do is open your Adobe reader, click Help, then click Repair Adobe Reader Installation. I was so glad I didn't have to do all the steps that Fongolio did!

Hope this helps some fellow Windows 7 users.

I still can't get windows updates to work properly though, I was getting blue screen of death after they were installed.......
