I can't get cable modem or dsl where I live. Too far out but I am considering DTV sat broadband. Any1 have experience with this DTV service?

greg,
welcome to the fast lane! buckle up and watch out for incoming traffic!:D
Henry,
DTV DirecWay is ok, download speed is comparable to cable/DSL. Upload speed is the bottleneck. But, for your surfing needs, it will do the job nicely.I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie. -
H - My buddy at work had Satellite and was not super pleased with it. He was in same situation, but now has cable modem. It seemed to be quite weather affected, but that's just one person, so take that for what it is.
Cable Modem is the shiznit....well T1 is the shite, but its too expensive, even for a residential T1.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint. -
For dishnetwork sat broadband it was pretty pricy..around 65 bucks/month if I remember correctly.suds, suds and more suds!

I was told by others the upload was not good. Thats a problem for me.Originally posted by dorokusai

YUP!
I have also compared PCS 3G services which is fine both ways in my network. I'm considering actually purchasing the service then writing it off. "Believe it or not?"
Packet Pipes were my biggest issue but was worth the effort expanding. My netwwork is averaging about 90kBs/sec across the subscriber base.

hence it is good only for surfing....beats dial-up. It should be considered if you are absolutely certain that cable modem or DSL is not an option. Call your local DSL provider (i.e. Verizon), most likely it's in the work.I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie. -

I personally like the hardware firewall option. You can snatch yourself a decent Cable/DSL router w/built-in firewall and also be able to share that fast pipe with other computers in the house. I got the Netgear MR314 wireless router and it lets me have a fast pipe to the desktop PC, or I can roam the house w/the laptop and still get great download speeds in the kitchen.

Gotta go with Tony here....buying a router is a more effective way to have a firewall. Buy a router with a WAP (wireless access port) and if you ever decide to get a laptop, you will be able to go wireless for about another 40-50 dollars. (Depending on the wireless card.)
Congrats on getting rid of Ma Bell. Trust me you will be a downloading fool for the first month.
Also head to http://bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/ and llet us know how fast you are really running. Here are my results....no I am not lying.
Details
Your raw speed was 1683478.26 bits per second which is the same as:
Communications
1.7 megabits per second
How communication devices are rated. Kilo means 1,000 and mega means 1,000,000. Examples include 56k modem and 10Mbit Ethernet
Storage
205.5 kilobytes per second
The way data is measured on your hard drive and how file sharing and FTP programs measure transfer speeds. Kilo is 1,024 and mega is 1,048,576.
1MB file download
5 seconds is the time it would take you to download a 1 megabyte file at this speed.

Not necessarily. Most routers and broadband connections are on 24/7. Provisioning of IP's is based on how your ISP has their DHCP server set up. Some of them never change, some change daily. Generally, if you leave your cable/dsl modem on all the time, the IP shouldn't change. You risk changing the IP if you turn off your equipment for a long time (i.e. go on vacation for a week and come back).
