So I swapped the iPhone out for a Droid...

Between the Aria and the iPhone, you made the better choice. The aria is so neutered that it's pointless.

With flight mode enabled the market doesn't 'know' which carrier you have so it just shows you everything.
thats kind of what I figured, just wanted to clarify...it is pretty nifty...haha.

well i went ahead and ordered a IPhone 4. it was a real toss up between the IPhone 4 and the Samsung Captivate. I mean, I'm sure I would be happy with either phone. Both are considered tops in their OS. I mean, there was nothing one phone had over the other phone that tipped my decision in anyway... other than there are more 3rd party accessories available for Apple products than there ever will be for a Samsung phone.
Android 2.1 is very cool.. i'm sure 2.2 would be even more so.
this will be my first Apple product and my first smartphone.

Wow, you took the plunge, huh Al? It'll be interesting to read your impressions. My contract w/Verizon is up in a few months & I'll be looking around. Good luck!"Wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then." Bob Seger

I think you'll be happy with the iPhone 4. I still think that's the better phone for most of the people out there, as most people don't really care (or don't know) about the restrictions Apple has on their market place, sure it's something for us nerd-types to **** about but in reality how much does it really matter. Either that or they're people like me who just jailbreak to get around alot of that, although out of 20 or so people I know who own an iPhone, I'm the only one who's jailbroken.
I should note though that jail breaking your phone will only get you so far. There are some fundamental differences between the two OSes and the way the two companies think, and alot of that 'design' cannot be overcome just by jail breaking. You gotta pick the one that you agree with more conceptually, and for the majority of people out there that is Apple.
The Captivate isn't hard to use, but any time you introduce a whole bunch of customizable options you're going to complicate things a bit, there's just no way around that, and for a lot of people the trade off between complexity and control just isn't worth it. -
Apple makes great products, no doubt, and the build quality of the iPhones is first rate. I'm just one if those guys that has always has a great disdain for iTunes. I always resisted buying an iPod, even though I knew it was a great product. When I wanted a portable music player, I went with Creative. I guess I was a little put off when I got my iPhone by being forced to interface with it via iTunes. That, and the lack of ability to customize the phone to MY preferences. But, it is a quality device that has revolutionized the mobile phone industry. My son has always laughed at me, saying that I had a love/hate relationship with my iPhone. We'll see how it goes with Android. (I'm realizing that it's not so much the phone, but the user interface.) Yeah, the Samsung hardware is pretty nice - just not quite up to Apple design and build quality.

Here's a reported fix for the weak GPS issue: http://www.intomobile.com/2010/07/21/t-mobile-samsung-vibrant-galaxy-s-gps-issues-fix-tutorial/
I have not tried it yet. -
Another question... if some apps are already installed and some settings are configured to my liking, does rooting reset everything to the default, or initial, state?
-
No it does not, all it does is give you superuser rights. Installing a new ROM would overwrite all that

Anyone know how Mac compatible the 'Droid phones are? I have a BB Storm right now and to say syncing it with my iMac is a PITA is an understatement. I am a Verizon customer and with the rumors of the iPhone coming to my carrier I am tempted to wait for that but if the Droid is fairly mac compatible the Droid X looks REALLY tempting.2-channelBelles 22A Pre, Emotiva XPA-2 Gen 2, Marantz SA8005, Pro-Ject RPM-10 Turntable, Pro-Ject Phono Box DS3B, Polk Audio Legend L800's, AudioQuest Cable throughout.

What is it that you're wanting to do? There isn't an iTunes for Droid really, all you'd be doing is copying media to and from in an explorer type window. I don't know how it works with Mac though.

Contacts, calendar events, music and upgrade the OS on the phone.2-channelBelles 22A Pre, Emotiva XPA-2 Gen 2, Marantz SA8005, Pro-Ject RPM-10 Turntable, Pro-Ject Phono Box DS3B, Polk Audio Legend L800's, AudioQuest Cable throughout.

I sync contacts and calendars via my GMail account, and all that's done OTA, so can't comment there.
Transferring music should be straightforward like copying to any usb drive.
hacking the phone though will be much more difficult, as most of the tools that you'd need like the Android SDK are Windows apps only.
If you're on a Mac you'd likely be better served by just holding out for the iPhone, it'll be a much better experience. -

Considering Android runs on Linux kernel, making the SDK Windows only would have been a stupid move. It's available in all 3 major players; Windows, Mac and Linux. All the apps will be Java only, no native code allowed. If you really want full control, Maemo/Meego platform is that.

Cool, did not see that, all the guides and such I've seen only had the tools in Windows.

Thanks guys. Here's to hoping the rumors are finally true.2-channelBelles 22A Pre, Emotiva XPA-2 Gen 2, Marantz SA8005, Pro-Ject RPM-10 Turntable, Pro-Ject Phono Box DS3B, Polk Audio Legend L800's, AudioQuest Cable throughout.

can someone with a Verizon android phone answer a question for me? Do you really need to pay the higher priced $45/month data plan in order to access exchange email accounts? Next year I might consider upgrading to a smart phone, but won't do it unless I can definitely check my work email (exchange server) on the $30 a month data plan.

Can you access your email offsite with a web browser? If so, no all you have to do is put in the email address and password and it will retrieve your emails.2-channelBelles 22A Pre, Emotiva XPA-2 Gen 2, Marantz SA8005, Pro-Ject RPM-10 Turntable, Pro-Ject Phono Box DS3B, Polk Audio Legend L800's, AudioQuest Cable throughout.

yes, but I meant for something more integrated, where my phone would alert me to a new email. Is there an app for that??
-
Yes you would get the emails on the handset.2-channelBelles 22A Pre, Emotiva XPA-2 Gen 2, Marantz SA8005, Pro-Ject RPM-10 Turntable, Pro-Ject Phono Box DS3B, Polk Audio Legend L800's, AudioQuest Cable throughout.

You're not understanding him, he wants email notifications. Phantom you'll need the more expensive plan for that

You're right. I didn't know what notifications were, had to look them up.2-channelBelles 22A Pre, Emotiva XPA-2 Gen 2, Marantz SA8005, Pro-Ject RPM-10 Turntable, Pro-Ject Phono Box DS3B, Polk Audio Legend L800's, AudioQuest Cable throughout.

really? wow. I'm kinda surprised. It seems like there's an app for everything. I guess it sorta makes sense though, you don't want to be giving out exchange email login/pw to just any old app maker though.
I just don't think $45 a month is worth it to me though -

I have yet to figure out why the charge extra for "business email" which seems to me to be MAPI client access essentially. I realize syncing with Exchange is different, but why wouldn't they make it possible via their basic data plan pricing? Why charge extra?-Kevin

verizon charges for every possible thing they can for as much as they can. period. If they were not the absolute best in coverage in my area I would switch. -
yes, but I meant for something more integrated, where my phone would alert me to a new email. Is there an app for that??
I have the standard email plan (NOT the $45month plan) and an app called Nitro Touchdown (I think it was around $30) to sync with my work email. I get notifications for new emails, calendar invites, tasks, etc.... -

If you think the BB is a PITA, I would definitely pass on the DroidX as long as you can hold out for the iPhone.
