    http://www.pcworld.com/article/167424/google_voice_5_reasons_to_use_it_5_reasons_to_think_twice.html

    To me they are.

    1. Privacy...don't really care. Soon enough you're going to be getting advertisements for Bose speakers on your cell phone because you were on a polk forum.

    2. Advertisements...I love how the list of reasons to think twice is mostly hypothetical. I dont have any and GV has been around for a while

    3. Google Voice goes down. It might suck for someone calling me...but I can still call out. This could be a downside for a business, but everyone has outages...even cell phone companies and home line companies. I guess this somewhat compounds that, but I havent had an issue.

    4. There's no extra step for Android users...which I was referring to in my original post. Yes, if you have an iphone, you have to open the app before making a call from your google number. Downside of having an apple product. I cant get autotune for my android, I dont start a blog about it (although some people have)

    5. This could be bad, but its not like you stop getting calls at your old number. You can update as you go and not miss anything. People calling the regular number are still going to get through to you. I could see this as a problem for a small number of people, but not me.

The only other bad thing I would say about google voice is about twice a month it doesnt work when I call out. For whatever reason, it says cannot connect...usually when I dont have a strong connection (but not always...its pretty random). But I can still call out through my regular number.

I love mine droid!!! Was waiting for the iphone but when it did not come to verizon I said screw it and bought a incredible and my gosh I love it. My only con I find is the crappy games for the droid and the better apps for the iphone. Other than that I love it.

Well, we as stupid Americans continue to allow "locked" phones while the rest of the world is allowed to pursue the the free market. There are more than enough citizens to pressure the FTC to make laws against locked phones.

But we allow carriers to continue to over charge us, well mostly At&T and Verizon, and have monopolies on certain phones.

So in the meantime I will stay with Sprint, unlimited calling after 7pm, any calling to ANY cell phone free, regardless of time, and UNLIMITED DATA USAGE all for $70.00 a month. I feel sorry for all the new AT&T customers.

They do not. I asked the same question of a friend of mine who just bought an Incredible, and we tested it out (he called me on his phone, put me on speaker, and then went and did web stuff, and we had no problems).

I agree with you on AT&T though. I've been with them since it was CellularOne and haven't had a bit of problem.

Are you sure your friend wasn't connected in a WiFi network? I'm pretty sure that with the CDMA system you can't talk and surf at the same time. You need 4G CDMA for that to work. My understanding is it's inherent to the CDMA 3G network and not a limitation by Verizon or Sprint's 3G.

    I could be wrong but....

While we're here and considering the lack of response to an earlier post asking....

....Anyone know of an Android app for a calendar or reminder that allows reminders down to the minute? If I need a reminder for 3 hours and 37 minutes before a meeting, then that's what I need. A jump from a 3 hour reminder to a 12 hour one does me no good.

    Thanks,

This is kind of disingenuous. The rest of the world may not have the same model as us, but that also means they don't get carrier subsidies. I guarantee if you polled most Americans and asked them if they would rather a) get a locked iPhone for $200 from AT&T but be tied to them for two years, or b) get an unlocked iPhone that they could use with ANY carrier but it would cost them the full $600, 99.99% of them would choose option A. I know I would.

Maybe that makes me a stupid American, but bite me.

Hey Wes...I don't think you're going to find a reminder between 3 hours and 12 hours. I'm using Nitro Touchdown on a DroidX and it has the same time gap.

....so I've had the DroidX (Verizon) for almost 2 weeks, and I've found it less than impressive so far. My last phone was a Blackberry....understanding that they are built for different purposes and different consumers, I'm thinking about going back to a Blackberry.

    Ringer
So if I want to switch from Vibrate/Silent to Ring, I have to go into Settings? Really? So if my phone is locked, it is 7 steps to unlock, change settings, and lock my phone again. Hopefully I'm just missing an obvious screen icon or setting that allows me to change the ringer in some other way....

    Email
A "Smartphone" that was released knowing that it has issues with Exchange Servers.... the fix on Motorola's own site is to download Nitro Touchdown's 30 day trial and hope that they get it fixed in the meantime. Otherwise you have to purchase the Touchdown license to continue getting corporate email on the DroidX. Not really a big deal...many people like the Touchdown App and it isn't that expensive for what it does. Personally, I'm not a big fan...it seems to drop settings and meeting invites are impossible to manage. I'm also a little bitter about the time I spent trying to get my work email to sync on this phone before finding the "known problem" on a message board.

    Battery Life
This is what I would consider my biggest issue...the battery lasts less than 8 hours with what I consider "light" use (compared to what I would use the Blackberry). If I actually make any calls, consider this thing's day over. In talking to friends with iPhones, they have the same issue and just consider "charging time" a normal part of the day...so I will disregard this complaint as an uneducated consumer on my part. At least with the DroidX I can carry a spare battery....hell, maybe this will finally be my great excuse to buy a fannypack for all of the extra batteries and chargers I'll need to get through the day. Maybe I can get one of the fancy ones with a loop for my water bottle and keys.... Oh, BTW, YES...I did check and adjust all of the phone settings that drain a battery....the screen brightness is on the lowest setting and impossible to see while outside during the day. Very useful feature....

    3G Mobile Hotspot
Very nice and very easy to use. It works much easier than a tethered Blackberry for internet access in airports and hotels. Unfortunately, the phone battery drains at the same pace it charges while this is turned on.

    Impressions
The Android software is definitely cool. Widgets are useful and the flexibility to organize them together with icons on 7 different screens is great...however, I have very few widgets (in fact, 3 screens are currently blank) and I'm already complaining about battery life. I've downloaded several apps and I'm pretty excited about the NFL Mobile app from Verizon. Then it occurred to me...how the hell is this going to work when I'm at a football game this fall and want to check scores on other games? Unless I plan ahead to make sure the phone is FULLY charged before I walk into the stadium (very unlikely with the way I like to tailgate), there is no way it will last through the game. Do I really want to make sure I'm carrying a full battery around all the time?

With the Blackberry, I could make calls, text, browse the internet, had a Yelp App, Facebook App (to stalk, but never post), Scoremobile App (for football and hockey scores/spreads), and could consider it good for the entire day with little thought. The DroidX as a replacement does each of these better (well, except for make calls), but is quickly taking over my entire life. When I really need it, it let's me down. Take last night for example...a colleague sent me an email with the restaurant name/address we were going to meet at. When I went to open the email and map the restaurant, my phone was dead. Here I am with a sexy new phone scrambling to find the closest Starbucks so that I can drag out the laptop....

Is this really how smartphone users live?

I have the original Motorola Droid...

    1. Ringer: When I power my phone on, if I drag the right-hand slider to the left, it turns on/off "silent" mode. Or I can unlock the phone and just hit the "volume down" button until it gets to vibrate or OFF. Pretty simple.

    2. Email: I don't use Exchange so I can't offer any input on this issue.

    3. Battery Life: My battery typically lasts 2 days. I send maybe 20 text messages a day, maybe make 4-5 calls, and check e-mail with it constantly. If you go into Settings=>About Phone=>Battery Use you can see exactly what has been chewing up the battery. You might need to turn the screen brightness down a little bit, or adjust the sleep timer, or maybe turn off Bluetooth if you don't use it (I keep mine ON).

    4. 3G Hotspot: Really nothing to say here, as it's more a complaint on the battery life from #3.

    Yes

I do have an issue with the sync to Outlook though...the speed dial numbers where I have a "wait" or "pause" inserted (typically for conference call lines and voicemail) do not work right. I haven't had a chance to fix it yet, but probably just have to go back in and manually insert these numbers.

I just got an iPhone 3gs because I had a renewal and it was only $99. I usually dislike4 apply products, but after using the sub- $100 phones, the iPhone was my favorite (considering I am limited to AT&T offerings). I don't use all the data and fancy apps, never have, but it works great as a good old phone. And I love the texting interface, which is very important to me because I text much more than call. Being able to have a phone/ good media player is one is nice.

There is a lot of good review info here - but my favorite part about the HTC incredible is the way it linked all my contacts from facebook, gmail and my exchange server at the office - it was easy and effortless -

I tether to Ubuntu and it works great - no software to install
plug and play - 3g laptop connection - gotta love Linux!

Its camcorder takes really good video

It is great for sharing and communicating

The traffic and navigation (GPS) built in aps are easy to use and very functional

Crazy freaking fast; I pull up websites and navigate effortlessly

All in all: Getting this phone revolutionized how I do what I do.

    Its a life changing gizmo.

look into purchasing the advanced task killer app. That helps.

I take mine off the charger around 7:30am and depending on usage, and im a pretty heavy user, it dies around 8:30. At work, I keep a USB to microusb for my phone, so I can always charge it off my laptop. You can also buy additional batteries.

Also, turn your wifi off when youre not using it as that helps as well.

Thanks Cody. I'll try the app for a few days to see if it helps. I managed to turn off WiFi the 1st day I got this thing and haven't turned it back on since.

On the other hand, I think that you helped reinforce that a smartphone isn't made for someone who is away from a plug all day. Last week (my 1st full week with this phone) it wasn't so much an issue when I was either traveling with a car charger or able to leave my phone in the room while I sat at a blackjack table. This week I'm in DC and traveling by cab or foot to the FDA and FCC buildings, restaurants, etc.... I'm not staying anywhere for more than a few hours and really don't wanna be that high maintenance jackass that needs to plug in a phone all the time....however, it's really not cool to be unavailable by mid-afternoon just because my sexy new phone is dead.

From the CNET review of the Captivate:
More apps are available from the Android Market, but once again, AT&T has blocked the ability to install third-party apps on the Captivate by removing the Unknown sources option under Applications settings. This is quite annoying, especially when other carriers don't put the same restrictions on their Android phones.
Thanks AT&T. I guess this is what makes "rooting" necessary, huh?

There is often confusion around sideloading apps and rooting your phone, yet the two aren't necessarily related.

    Sideloading Apps
Sideloading is the process of installing an app that's not in the marketplace. There's a huge developer community out there, and they are always working on and introducing new apps. Most eventually hit the marketplace, some do not. Sideloading gives you the ability to install them by downloading the file directly and installing outside of the marketplace.

AT&T has this restricted to the point where I can't open up the browser on my phone and download an .apk file and install it. You CAN still sideload apps, and it's very easy to do, the only caveat is that the easy method requires you to do it when your phone is connected to your PC.

    Rooting Your Phone
Rooting is done only to give you full access, also referred to as superuser privaleges, which allows you do do more advanced things like using a custom ROM on your phone. There are also some apps that require this level of access, but that's the same for every carrier, not just AT&T. So rooting your phone is more about the device itself, not the carrier. I suppose you could buy a phone that's already rooted, but the guys up at work with the Incredible and the Evo from the other two carriers did not have root access when they bought their phones, and I'd assume most of the phones you buy are like this.

    App Market Restrictions
AT&T does place some restrictions on what apps are viewable in the marketplace, not sure if they're the only ones who do this. A good example is a tethering app, AT&T wants you to pay them for tethering service, and in order to do that they need you to use their app. However, there are apps out there like PDANet that allow you to tether without paying AT&T, and these apps are not available in the market when you do a search if you have an AT&T SIM installed.

The airplane mode trick though is a simple 5 second workaround for this, so it's not a problem really.

Another thing I forgot to mention about rooting...

Most carriers install some carrier specific apps (like AT&T navigator, MobilTV, etc). I consider all the to be garbage and so I removed it, you'll need root access for something like that.

Also, the Captivate has a Samsung loader and GUI installed. There's nothing wrong with it, but I prefer the look and feel of LauncherPro. I'd already rooted my phone by the time I got around to install that, so not sure if you'd need root access for that particular app or not, but it's worth checking out.

Whats that? I googled it but didnt find anything specific.

Airplane mode disables wireless and bluetooth functions on the phone so it is safe to use in flight for games, music, etc. It still needs to be turned off during takeoff and landing just like any other electronic device.

You put the phone inti flight mode which disables the carrier link, then turn on wifi, then connect to the market and download the apps you want and then just disable flight mode when you're done.

With flight mode enabled the market doesn't 'know' which carrier you have so it just shows you everything.

This is my first post from my new phone...

You guessed it - I'm on a Captivate now! Thanks for turning me on to this! Oh yeah, my first comment - I'm dropping my appeal for a mobile version of this forum. Apparently, all l needed was a better mobile browser! Goodbye iPhone, hello Android!
