We left the house a bit later than usual around 715am. We get to a 4 way stop, to the left of me is a minivan who got there before I did and behind him a honda fit. The van leaves the stop sign then I proceed to turn right only to notice the the Fit is right behind us, guess he thought he got there before I did. All of a sudden he guns it and starts tailgating us. At the nex stop sign I turn left at which point I am quite far ahead of the fit. Again only to notice he is tailgating us again, so I tap my brakes which makes him slam on his and fish tail a bit. We get to another road where I signal and turn right. He follows, again to the point where I cannot see the from engin hood of his car, I tap once again. He then tries to pass us with no luck as there is an other SUV in front of us. He then sped up and passed us, as soon as he got right in front of us he slammed on his brakes I swerved narrowly missing him, we were driving the limit on that road which was 80kms, while avoiding him, we went to the on coming trafic lane (thank god no one was there). We fish tailed then hit gravel then we fish tailed again on the gravel then flew into a field, (it had just rained last night and this field is unkept) we did two doughnuts, fish tailed again 2 x then finally regained control of our SUV, the entire time I thought we were going to flip. I gave it gas to get out of the field and ditch. The fit was long gone by then. We caught up to him in order to get his plates. We then pulled over and called 911. Apparently the SUV in front of us had also called 911 to report road rage incident. Cops came she was very nice. We completed the report. Sat for a couple mins to calm down then drove to work. Our SUV is covered in mud/tall grass. At this point I don't know if there was any damage to our truck.
My wife and I are ok a little shaken from this. I just don't get idiots like that, we could have been killed and he would have driven away.

Sorry rant over...I feel a bit better

I am glad to hear you are alright.

From you account however, it would appear that the better option would have been to let the fool go rather than play bumper tag with him. Eventually he will find himself on the wrong end of a semi truck and Darwin will have prevailed, but for your safety, it's best not to play.

Very true, I know I have learned that I will not tolerate idiots like this and either slow down or just pull over.
He had no intention of going around us till he did that one time. He was content tailgating us.

Now i'm not sure if our truck has suffered any damage. It doesn't appear to be it drove fine on the way to work. I'm not sure if I should just bring it it for a once over, just in case.

Agree with this 100%!! Playing with him is just going to piss him off more and who knows what will happen with jerks like that. While I never tailgate on purpose I will admit I used to react the way you did until one day my young daughter asked why and suggested just let it go because "daddy, what's it going to prove if you act like a jerk too?".

But, recently I did follow a lady (who tailgated me and cut me off when she finally passed me) to the local mall and when she got out of her car asked her if she learned to drive like an a@@hole or did it come naturally. Made me feel better :)

    Thank you every one.

On the lighter side of it, this was the first time in 4 yrs our SUV has seen off roading (not that it was extreme by any means). At lunch I'm going to give it a once over again to see if there are any leaks of any sort.

I have driven in some countries where the drivers leave me scratching my head, Cuba- Dominicain republic-Costa Rica and Mexico, yes they drive like maniacs, but they are not rude or aggressive.

I am sorry that my spelling was bad but the adrenaline was still pumping when I was typing that.

As I mentioned, I have learned that it is not worth it. I wil be sure to pull over and let them go on their merry way.

We all hate the HTA 172 in Canada, but damn - first case when I clearly see that the guy should and will be charged with STUNTING. Loss of license for a week, loss of car for a week, up to $10,000 fine. Put careless driving charges on top of that.

Good to hear that you are ok.

People are insane. Obviously the best choice is to just pull over and let the nutjob pass and harass someone else, but sometimes in the heat of the moment that's not as easily done as said. I almost never get road rage anymore.... and this kind of situation si the one exception. If someone is raging AT ME and doing something to threaten my safety is the only time I lose my cool behind the wheel.

Gave the vehicle a fast once over didn't notice anything leaking. I don't think there is damage. It's not a tank, but it is an suv so I'm sure the tall grass and couple doughnuts didn't hurt it.

I never liked driving in Ottawa at the best of times, let alone dealing with an idiot like that. I used to go there quite a bit when my sister lived in the Glebe. She now lives in Quebec 45 minutes out of Ottawa. When I did go to visit we would just park at her place and walk or take a cab.

Anyway, glad to here you guys made it out of this situation safe.

Sounds like my daily adventures on the road.

Tailgaters suck. It's bad in an SUV but even worse in a pickup truck. I was rear-ended once by a guy who managed to hide an entire Oldsmobile Eighty-Eight behind my tailgate. It was dark out so that added to it but I had no idea he was back there. I started to slow for a stop sign by downshifting and I felt a huge jolt and see him swerve off to the side.

I had another girl in a Honduh Civic following me so closely that she couldn't see around me. I was moving to the right to pass a vehicle making a left turn. Just past the vehicle making a left turn was a car parked on the side of the road. I had enough room to get around the left turner and the parked car and continue traveling. Well, Little Miss Honduh didn't see the parked car and when I moved left to avoid the car...she didn't. She plowed right in to the car. I was going to keep going but figured I should stop. So I did and she went ape-poo on me and blamed me. So I said OK and called the police. Told cops what happened and it was corroborated by another witness even though she attempted to blame me completely.

I hope the cops got the little **** who was behaving like that. Far too many times do I see such shenanigans on the road and there is never a cop around. It gets worse in the summer because the kids are out of school, a bunch just got licenses and they are all bored out of their minds.

Just got off the phone with our dealership we are taking it in after work just in case. Also called our insurance broker to let them know what happened and gave them the police report# again to COA. They will get our guy as we were able to get their plate #.
I was just talking to my wife who said he was a middle aged balding man and his wife was in the car. I remember the wife as they passed us before making us go off the road. She didn't seemed phased that her idiot husband was acting like an A$$. Like holding on or yelling at him.
The police officer did tell me the file will go to the traffic divison and they will be knocking at his door. He will most likely get fined for aggressive driving and road rage. As for going to court who knows. I'd be happy with just giving him the fine but I'm also willing to go to court if need be.

Dude, a fine? He caused an accident and left the scene. He should get more than a fine. That's a bonafide crime here.

The officer told me (at the time) there was no damage to the vehicle so it is not considered and accident. Another reason why we are off to the dealership after work. As of right now it's road rage and agressive driving. I am grateful the SUV in front of us call 911 as well it's just more ammo for us even if they don't show up to court as we called it in about 5 mins after they did.

Glad to hear you're ok, JF!

My advice, don't wash the car and take some pics.

Jstas, we don't mess around in Ontario a whole lot. First DUI is a criminal offence and I watched my sister get a $400 reckless driving ticket for crashing my car. She was following too closely, the brakes needed work, it was raining, and there you have it. She was trying to make a yellow light and the guy in front was trying to stop.

Well I hope to God that there is some appreciable damage just so they can screw that guy to the wall. Not that I'm wishing pain and suffering on you but if it takes a bent control arm or wheel or something, as long as there is an insurance claim so the cops can go after him and throw him in the clink, I'll be happy! Cars can get repaired, people, not always and that guy showed a complete disregard for others around him.

Well here in NJ, just because he left the road in an uncontrolled manner trying to avoid someone who clearly was using his vehicle as a weapon or roadblock with malicious intent, the cops would have been knocking on his door and given him the chance to exercise his right to remain silent.

NJ has also been cracking down on aggressive driving lately too so there would have been no leniency for him at all.

I just think it sucks that the guy can be such a total ****, endanger everyone around him and behave like that and all he'll get is slap on the wrist and a fine.

Hell, tell me what dealer you're going to. I'll drop the service writer a "Benjamin" and have him "find" something broken just to take the guy to the cleaners.

We think alike! Although I never get the road rage anymore, I do have a propensity to react to some **** who is threatening my safety.

I have to admit back in the old crazy days (before cell phones), I used to drag people out of their cars not caring about the consequences. . . those days are long gone, thank God.

Willow glad everything turned out okay and no-one was hurt. I hope the cops catch the POS and nail him with any and every citation that applies.

That's what pisses me off the most, is that they caused the issue, saw us going crazy in the field and took off, what if we had been seriously hurt or killed. He should have stopped to see if we were ok. I don't care about the truck what so ever. I was sure we were going to ram him when he cut us off and then slammed on the brakes. Part of me think that is what we should have done, just have rammed him right up the A$$ and destroy the back of his FIT.

Sounds like the same **** that hit me with her car tearing up my knee, hip and tweaking my back, with an 8" long 2" wide brush burn from my calf to my knee, and had the guts to tell me to watch where I'm walking. That was three years ago and we are waiting to go to jury trial. UGH!
