PSW505 too much for small room?

Hi,

I am new here, and I would appreciate any comments or advice about how to upgrade my HT set up.

I have a small room about 15 x 15 feet, I already have setellite speakers (Boston Acoustics, FR:35 -20K Hz) and two 8 inch subs: one BA (35-200 Hz) and one Polk PSW111(32-250Hz/150 watts). The bass output is tight and musical, but I would like to get to lower frequencies, below 30, and to get more powerful sound for movie watching, which I can not get right now.

I was planning to replace the old BA sub, by a ten incher, but the models I have checked so far don´t have the frequency response I am looking for. I was planing to settle for a Def Tech Prosub800 (20Hz) or a Prosub1000(18Hz), when I read reviews of the PSW505, that I can get in the internet for a fairly discounted price.

My question is; If I replace the two small subs with the PSW505, would it be too much bass for a room this small, would it overkill the sound of the satellite speakers.

Any recommendations? (Please bear on mind that I am a casual user).

Thanks

    WELCOME TO CLUB POLK!

The simple answer is "NO" your room is not too small for a PSW505. It will work fine in that sized room. You just have to tweak it a bit but that's easy enough! It's also a very nice HT sub for those very effects you are looking for. Hits louder and lower than anything else you have.

    Good Luck.

    Welcome to CP!
I had that Polk sub and it was great for HT. The walls will rattle a little so if you have neighbors in a apartment or condo that might be more of a consideration. But my no means is it too big for your room....enjoy!:p

    Hi JCA,

I own the Polk PSW 505 and am really enjoying it. It has its own volume control, so experiment with the tweaking (volume, placement in the room, etc ...) that cnh recommended, and have fun with it!

I agree too that it is not too big. I am in a 15X20 room, maybe a little bigger. On days I am not into all the bass I use the volume control on the back.

By the way I am new too!

polks older subs make alot of port noise on HT stuff due to the ports not being big enough to accommodate the air turbulence of loud sounds below 30hz sounds, getting a psw505 would not be overkill at all. the lower you can go the less port noise with the older polk subs, i have a psw10 and anything below 30hz causes port noise. also there is no such thing as overkill on a sub, the less the sub has to exert itself the lower distortion and port noise you will have.

Thanks a lot everyone for your comments, I appreciate it, now I feel confident that the PWS505 will be fine for my HT.

While I did my resarch about what sub would work for me, I also came across some models from Mirage (PrestigeS10), HSU (STF-2), Velodyne (Impact-12) and Klipsch (Synergy Sub-12). All had good specs, but were out of my budget. I singled out the 505 as a good value, considering cost and features.

    Thanks again for the help!

    Hi JCA,

I also liked the subs that you just mentioned, but like you, they were out of my price range. I have no regrets with the PSW 505 (that doesn't mean that I wouldn't consider upgrading some day). Let us know what you think of it when you get it.

    Best Wishes,
