A close high school friend of mine is a an author, she just published a novel about the main character from Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter called Hester: The Missing Years of The Scarlet Letter. She took a sample of her prose from the novel and the site came back saying she wrote like Stephen King!

I have that one on the bookshelf, but haven't gotten around to reading it yet.

981 pages of text plus an additional 104 pages of end notes (388)...and this for a work of fiction. I've heard that one should keep two bookmarks: one of the text, one for the notes. Not quite ready to take the plunge yet...

It was my old roommate's favorite book (and author). He would occasionally pick out certain relevant sections for me to read during late night drinking/discussions and that was really about enough for me. I have a hard time getting through a 200 page book let alone that monster. The text is tiny too!

EDIT: I should mention, that roommate majored in 'creative writing' and received a Masters in the same. His goal in life was to be a writer. Unfortunately, he never had enough drive to finish any of his works and seek to get them published. He now works for a staffing company.
For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore...

This is really cool. I put in an unfinished short story I had sitting in my documents, and it said I write like H. P. Lovecraft. Given that I count him as a major influence to my fiction, I took it as high praise. :)

Put in a lab report I did for school, and it apparently resembles Dan Brown. He must be a rather dry fellow.

Threw in more of my short stories, and they come up as either Lovecraft or Arthur C. Clarke. :)

The more writing samples I put in, the more Lovecraft results I get. It simultaneously makes me happy, and makes me want to try to vary my writing style a bit more.

One of my shorts came back Chuck Palahniuk. Apparently it was grittier than the rest :D

You don't watch much TV James.....his horror tales have been scripted and shot!

..Shakespeare and Dan Brown...that's pretty much in line with what I said above. Now there's a pretty pair.

James Joyce....EARLY or LATE, because they ARE quite different. For the late Joyce all you need is a Thesaurus, ONE event and about 30,000 different words describing it. It's actually pretty easy to simulate Joyce...but very very difficult to actually write like him?

Ding! Ding! We have a winner! This is the best post in this thread so far. The program can't even identify an ACTUAL author that's included in its parameters?? Probably written by a tech who doesn't really know much about literature?

But it is fun, nonetheless! Nice thread JSTAS. Where do you dig this stuff up?

That's an interesting story about your roommate. The fact he didn't do what he wanted does not make him very different from the majority of human beings. A better question would be 'what kind of human being is he now'? Good, happy, kind, compassionate or the opposite. In the end most will not realize their dreams but the life they lived is really their 'legacy'. The reason I ask is because I know a lot of people like this and some are some of the best human beings I've ever met?

Agreed! He was the epitome of cool.

However I wonder how a shaved headed Christian Bale with a mole pasted to his face would do as Kojack. He really goes all out to play a character.
