You know, EMT's and paramedics do have protocol to follow. If they were not called to the scene, they do not necessarily have the permissions necessary to treat if the situation is non-life threatening. I know we had that at the EMS unit I ran with. We had to get permission from dispatch and the doctor advisory on treatment before we could do anything unless the patient's life was in clear danger. Besides, we ran two crews on duty cycles so when one crew was on break, they were not allowed to take the ambulance. No ambulance, no real ability to treat or transport or, well, a radio for that matter. How do you call an ambulance when you don't have a radio? Let's all say it together kids! "Call 911".

The only reason we had that was because of assbags making knee-jerk assessments that they are wholly unqualified to make and then suing the bejesus out of us for HELPING someone. Kinda bass ackwards if you ask me.

Nobody in the media has any clue what goes in to being an EMS professional or volunteer. The only way you will ever know is if you do it. A bunch of loud-mouthed dingers on the Internet are just that, loud-mouthed dingers. There is no possible way anyone could make an accurate assessment of that situation without being there.

It's not karma, he didn't get what was coming to him. The only certainty is that there are 3 lives that are no longer with us and that is a sad thing. What's worse is that you fools are going to sit here on an audio forum, having zero applicable training, and come down on the people for what you perceive as negligence. Yet, at the same time, these EMTs were likely hobbled by rules put in place to protect them from the very same fools who are screaming negligence. Why? Because it's those fools who scream negligence who warranted the protocols in the first place. Only fools will sue the guy who just helped them out and likely saved their life.

Ed, I'm sorry your friend is gone. I'm sorry it happened under such circumstances. I've been there and actually had to testify in court in a wrongful death case because a drug addict refused to let us in the house when he called 911 for his over-dosing friend. The friends parents actually sued us and the police department for negligence. Both the EMS unit and the police were exonerated of any wrong doing but it got smeared all over the papers. There were all kinds of threats, nasty notes and things thrown at the squad building and there was a very heated town council meeting over the whole thing. It truely sucked getting strung up for following the rules and protocols the town we worked for insisted on putting on us to "protect their rights and privacy". I hope everything works out in the end.

Oh and BTW, dingers are the immature douchenozzles that are in to EMS, fire fighting and police just for the fancy uniform, flashing lights and loud sirens. Thankfully, the police screen pretty well because you don't want losers like that having guns. But EMS and fire are usually fairly short handed constantly so they will take what they can get that is at least passable. Hence you end up with dingers who are just in it for the flash and glory. Of course they are victims of pride as well and feel a need to post on the Internet about every call where things didn't go as well as they could have and offer their "expert" opinion on how it should have been done correctly.

    Yeah, I hate dingers.

Let me set the record straight. I did not know this person. I have 3100 coworkers. I do know alot of people but not all of them. I did work as an 911 dispatcher for a few years.
They're trained EMTs working on a computer terminal with no access to emergency equipment. All they can do if confronted with an emergency is ask for someone to call 911 and patiently wait for help to arrive. They were asked to help a patient they did not have direct access to. The patient had an Asthma attack not a seizure as reported.

There was alot of misinformation reported that got blown out of proportion.
These two EMTs/dispatchers were suspended for 30 which is a standard practice in FDNY for any of their EMS employees who undergo investigation for misfeasance.

His death along with the death of the pregnant woman were two separate tragic events.
My issue with the media is that they keep trying to portray this person as evil who got what he deserved. In my 20 years involved with the Emergency services, I have yet to know one person who does not do this job to genuinely help a person in need. It's certainly not for the pay or for recognition since we don't get enough of both.
