Replacements for Polk 6600x Drivers

My son bought a pair of Polk RTA 12b yesterday because he fell in love with my RTA 12c. After hooking them up, the 2 drivers ( mw6600x ) started popping. Changed the R & L channel wires and the same drivers popped. The other speaker is fine. Pulled the drivers out and both have the same issue, the paper cone has come loose from the spider ( if I have the right terms ). Can this be glued to fix or do we get replacement drivers. If new drivers are required, does anyone know what Polk part number would be a good replacement. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Harry

    Hey Harry,

It may be possible to re-glue the spider to the metal cage if that's what you mean. However if the spider is loose from the cone not the cage then it sounds like you should replace them.

On another note I see that you were trying to contact me about the MW 6500's that I have for sale. Fact is I don't know if you could use them instead of 6600x's. I rather doubt it. Perhaps someone else will chime in on this question.

Yes, the spider is loose from the cone. The label on the back of both speakers say they are mw 6600x.

That's not too surprising. The schematics listed here for my Monitor 10's claim that I should have a 6501 mid driver as well. It is my impression that all the monitor 10's have 6500's in them. I know mine do.

    This is odd.

RTA12Bs and early 12Cs have MW6600X drivers Later RTA12Cs havve 6501s. Early RTA 12s have 6500s. The 6600 was made special for the RTA12B and up . NONE of these drivers sound the same. The 6500 and 6501s are more alike. Find some 6600s. Keith

Thanks for the info guys. I've been looking around for the mw6600x but they seem to be like hens teeth to find.

I'm watching these. Unfortunately they don't have a Buy it Now price.
I contacted Polk and they have replacements for 60.00 each but didn't say what the model # was.

The Buy it Now went away because someone put up a bid. Make sure you get these. The ones Polk has now will not sound the same.

I am definitely going to try and get these.
Eric Wong at Polk Audio told me that the replacements they will sell to me are mw6503. I don't know a heck of a lot about Polk but I'm learning. So many types and models.
Hope I get the ones on Ebay.

Funny thing, the speakers that are in the RTA12b cab are MW6600 but in the schematic it shows MW6501. I got replacements from Polk and they are MW6503. I'm getting a little confused...

If you need/want record keeping that is good/accurate.......get some German speakers and forget about Polks altogether.;)
