How much space needed for LSi9 Bookshelf Speaker

I just purchased Polk Audio LSi9 Bookshelf speakers, and am currently building the bookshelves to hold the speakers and other equipment.
I looked at the manual and have info on the proper height, but I am wondering if it makes any difference in quality of sound depending on the distance the rear of a speaker sits away from the wall.
I may want to add an inch or two to the width of the bookshelves IF it makes a big difference in quality of sound. Are there any guidelines on the recommended space a speaker (the back) should be placed away from a wall?
Thanks for your input;)

I can't speak to the 9's, but I've had the 25's for a while. I was frustrated as hell with them when they were in a small bedroom, then moved to another small bedroom, then moved to an apartment.... lalalala... I finally have them sitting in the large room 8 feet apart, 10 feet from seating area with 4-5 feet of space on either side and 3 feet from the walls...
now they sound much better.
I have a feeling you will find that the more room you give them, the better. -
Typically, the closer to a wall a speaker is, the more bass response will be heard. Try moving the speakers a few inches from the wall at a time and listen. When you like what you hear, stop.Turntable: Empire 208
