Well let's see, soccer is the biggest sport in most foreign countries but these countries have no NFL team or can even watch NFL games with the exception of the Super Bowl so you win that argument based on those facts.

Even when they can see the Super Bowl, they still choose soccer over it.

I prefer football, basketball, and baseball over soccer, but I know this more of a cultural thing versus the quality of the sport.

Small correction - football (the sport where foot actually kicks the ball for most of the game) is the most popular sport pretty much everywhere, except for Canada and USA. I may understand Canada due to weather reasons, not sure about USA. Although, it's most likely the most growing sport in both countries.

If someone would judge the sport by just today's game (see above, someone already did), then it definitely was not the best game by far. On the other hand, Germany - Uruguay game was awesome!!!

Yes, yesterday's game was awsome, 2 teams playing a clean game with neither giving it up until the fa..... whistle blew;)

And I don't think there's any question about how fast it's growing in the US. It's been a couple of years now since it was reported there were more kids in summer soccer than Little League. When I was that age, you couldn't find a soccer team to play on. Great team sport, keeps you in shape and any size person can play.

How come those tough soccer players can't play in the snow or the cold?:D:p Don't compare it to baseball, they play in the cold, wet, blistering heat but not in the rain . . . you can't grip the ball and it screws up the game.

Well I've been hearing that for the last 20 years here and it still hasn't taken over the four major sports at least in this country. As stated above it may be more of a cultural thing but I think soccer is to keep the countries from going to war! LOL!:D:p

I'll agree with you there, soccer has taken a front seat to a lot of sports at that level. It's a lot easier to get kids who aren't athletically (no sarcasm here) inclined to play in more games than baseball (and God forbid mommy's greatest fear these days) football, basket ball and hockey. Plus with everything but basketball it is a lot cheaper to equip a kid for soccer.

This was not the final any casual fan could watch. The game was extremely boring until the last few minutes when there was finally some chances (and of course the goal). Though there was some games I enjoyed (both guana games come to mind, especially one against Uruguay.. crazy), this final game reminded me why soccer will never match the four professional sports in the US... It was more boring than golf and I HATE watching golf.

I don't know Bro, the descriptions above of all the hitting and spiking and dirty play may have made this an interesting game for the passer-by.;)

Sounds like a hockey game or a football game played with Ray Lewis.

They do play in snow and cold in other countries, depending on how their soccer season is structured, just not in Canada (because our major team(s) are playing in MLS, which is American :p).

Ah I see! Not being a soccer fan I wouldn't know that. Thanks for the info as that changed my mambie pambie perception.:)

Actually Joe, the WC this year was held in the middle of winter. (June in Southern hemisphere=winter) Some of the games were 32-40F with constant windchill putting it below freezing so I wouldn't say that they don't play in cold.
There is no genuine justice in any scheme of feeding and coddling the loafer whose only ponderable energies are devoted wholly to reproduction. Nine-tenths of the rights he bellows for are really privileges and he does nothing to deserve them. We not only acquired a vast population of morons, we have inculcated all morons, old or young, with the doctrine that the decent and industrious people of the country are bound to support them for all time.-Menkin

Well I can go along with you on Nascar & Tennis but Baseball, the tension between pitcher and hitter, especially in a pitcher's dual (which most people find excruciatingly boring) just keeps me on the edge of my seat. I love the strategy employed in each pitch by both the pitcher and batter.

I couldn't agree more. I've never understood why people find baseball boring. Especially pitch by pitch. It's truly a chess match between batter and hitter. I'm so glad we are finally in a pitcher's year. Give me a 1-0 game any day of the week.

And I love soccer for many of the same reasons. Take that for what it's worth:p
I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore

I think in both instances there is beauty in the "game within the game." Maybe you need to have played either sport to see that beauty, who knows.

I was rather disappointed in the Dutch coming out like an angry HS team instead of actually trying to play the game, so I'm glad they lost.

I tuned into quite a few matches and I enjoyed it for the most part. The last game was beyond boring though and I would have preferred they go to shootout so you could actually see some damn action on the goal........

The things that I don't like are the BLATANT overreacting that happens......all sports have it, but I saw people almost doing flips becuase they were hip bumped (and before their body reacted, their faces were 'dire pain' grimmaces)........looked like some of the biggest babies I've ever seen 'playing hurt'.......

I just watched the first 30 minutes or so of the U.S. vs. Spain Confederations Cup 2009 Semi-Final a year ago. Haven't watched that match since then.
You guys probably don't recall me raving about that tournament a year ago in South Africa.
Wonderful, wide-open match, back and forth. Altidore scored a great goal in the 28th minute, rolling a defender, knocking a bullet off Casillas' hands into the net.
Spain were starting probably 9 or 10 of the same guys who lifted the cup this year. Torres was fit, Iniesta was about the only key player missing. Fabregas in for him.
    Same old stinkin vuvuzelas.
U.S. this year were missing key players injured or out of shape, and just don't have the depth of players.
    U.S. won 2-0.
Spain were humiliated. Wouldn't even shake hands except Torres.

James the above bolded is what led me to believe they didn't play is the cold or snow but now I know better. Thanks, Joe:)
