Dude, after reading this thread, you need to go to a hospital. There is other stuff besides infections that can come from this. 2nd degree burns are usually accompanied by fun stuff like sun poisoning which is an allergic reaction to sunlight. Anyone can get it, some are more susceptible to it. But if you don't get it check and treated, it can lead to Anaphylaxis which is a hypersensitivity reaction to an allergen. it can bring on Anaphylactic shock which is exacerbated by the already low-blood pressure you have from the sunburn and dehydration. It very well can kill you. It was one of the top condition that we were taught to recognize and treat when I was in EMT school and more heart attacks, strokes and flat out deaths get brought on by such things as heat exhaustion, sun poisoning and similar conditions in the summer months.

All the suggestions of alcohol...bad idea. You're already dehydrated, that'll just make it worse.

Take yourself some ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB), it's an NSAID which is a Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug. It relieves pain and reduces swelling and inflammation. It works very well for relieving the pain of sunburn. Drink lots and lots of water. Use cold compresses (towel wet with cold water) and either Aloe, Noxema or one of the other drug store topical remedies until you can get to a doctor. If you feel light headed to the point where you think you are going to pass out or if you feel nauseous, get to a hospital immediately. You will likely be OK but even if it feels better, you should still go see one. Sunburn is a radiation burn and it's just as serious as if you got set on fire or something. Don't fool around with it. Your health is more important.

The vinegar is excellent in the early stages of the burn.
I'm as caucasian as it gets and burn easily. I've used the vinegar on numerous occasions with good results.
My last serious burn was last summer. I burned so bad that my blisters were seeping fluids.
Vinegar and Eucerin Intensive Repair lotion as prescribed by my physician did the trick.
IF your burn is that bad the ER isn't a bad idea at all.

I am impatiently waiting for the Wood Guru's advice on this issue :p

Lucky for me I have never suffered a sunburn of any type but I did see a fellow once that was headed to Hawaia for a vacation and went to a tanning place to get a insta tan and came out looking like a Lobster I had to bite my tounge to keep from bursting into laughter :p he loooked something like this fellow here  except redder.

    REGARDS SNOW
Well, I just pulled off the impossible by doing a double-blind comparison all by myself, purely by virtue of the fact that I completely and stupidly forgot what I did last. I guess that getting old does have its advantages after all :D

So far I've had two pieces of skin removed from my stomach due to skin cancer. In the next couple of months I'll probably have some more removed.

Did he make it to the doctor? Needs to.

Some of the suggestions may be helpful but some others were not. Anything that will dry the skin is not helpful. Toothpaste or alcohol would dry the skin, which is the last thing you want to do. It needs to be kept moist. The top and dead layers of skin will have to be scrubbed off to prevent scarring. You don't want scabs to form. The new skin will grow from the inside out.

I spent six months fixing my right arm after a hot water burn caused 2nd and 3rd degree burns from my shoulder to my wrist. Took my shirt off and the top layer of skin came with it. Not a good day. First time I ever had morphine. Skin graft on 50% of my forearm. On the 2nd degree burns, the nurse used silver creme, vaseline and bandage...between the soakings in clorozone and scrubbing.

Good luck with it and wear a shirt in the sun.

Well, I basically went to work. Bought a can of solarcaine cool aloe have been spraying that on all day, majority of the blisters are gone, only have a few of them a little smaller larger than the ----> O
Much better than the count I had before.
So, it seems solarcane is the best method. I am going to see if they go away by the morning tomorrow. If by mid afternoon they have stayed stable or have gotten worse I will be going strait to the ER and getting some of that silver cream mentioned.
If however they have gotten small I think I will get some of the medicated solarcaine and spray that on in between the spraying of the solarcaine cool aleo just to fight infection. So far non have popped....luckly.
    Wish me luck.

So far all is going well. It appears that the blisters are going down in numbers and in size, my arms have taned, and my shoulders are know redish brown instead of pink. It doesn't hurt to have move them as much as it used to.
I am on the road to recovery...I hope.
When all the blisters are gone, and it seems the skin is no longer red, I will start to put some vitamin E oil on the shoulders to fight scaring and such.
I think that Solarcaine stuff is doing the trick....

So I was mowing lawns all day for my college I go at for some extra cash, I was so tired I just went on to bed. Well, I woke up and I have a pink sunburn and it is blistering on my sholders and actually quite painful, it has hindered me from sleeping for a few hours.
Asking if anyone knows any immediate treatments I can do so that I may sleep...
I tried putting some of the wives intensive care lotion and aloe vera stuff....but it doesn't help the pain one bit just makes the bed all gooey.
    Thanks.

I stand corrected on emu juice. I think I will just stick with vitamin E oil.
As for noxema? It burned a lot. Did make it feel better, but not worth the pain...no way.
Will report if there are any changed or if this gets better more. Hopefully, by monday I will be all better like a few have said.

tan, maybe some. but wait a couple more days and enjoy all your dead epidermis in your bedsheets and on your pillows when you begin to peel. lol.

couple years back whilst body boarding in san diego i decided it wasn't in my nature to get back to shore. had my back to the sun for hours and hours. my ego disallowed sunscreen. long story short, i couldn't move a few hours later. red like a lobster worse than that chick on "the heartbreak kid". i had water blisters all over my shoulders and back. couldn't roll in bed at all. couldn't stand to live at all even whilst dead stationary. oh, and a few hours before i tried to go to bed that night i got the worst dizzyness i've felt since the last particular time i was drunk. i ran...hobbled up to the upstairs bathroom and puked my guts out. that, my friend, is sun poisoning.

my sis had the solarcaine. helped some. then she had some banana boat gel that seemed to ease some discomfort. went to work the following monday and i made fun of a coworker and he threw a small bunched up lenght of 16 gauge wire (like 2 grams worth) and it tore my skin and created an open sore. days of discomfort continued after this sunburn took place.

wearing clothes SUCKED. good time to join a nudist colony. well, one whose habitat dwells in the shade because the second a uv or ir ray hit my skin, i screamed bloody murder. anyway, it all went away and i moved on. i've heard an undertaking such as this can cause one to be more prone to getting skin cancer later on in life. somehow i don't doubt that. still, i'm out getting tans in the summer. only i try to span my time in the sun over an entire weekend vs all at once. i burn and then tan the same night. this has been a bad habit that i've pretty much broken away from.

anyway, you'll be fine. it's already happened. just get over it and don't let it happen again. oh, and enjoy peeling 6" sections of skin off in the near future. you can store them like the way goldmember stored his scabs he peeled, if you so choose.

Yeah, I plan on avoiding as much peeling as I can. I have bad ones before, nothing like this. I kept them covered in aloe and no peeling, I imagine this will be a different story.

That is exactly what I bought. Works like a charm. I have been using aloe vera whan I'm not at work and lathering that on every time it dries, then when I am at work. I use Banana boat aftersun spray on aloe gel and the solarcaine.
As of now I am in the itching like crazy phase. Driving me crazy because I know the moment I itch it I will get a world of pain.
Anyway, I know someone sugessted Vitamin E. How much of that should I use on my sunburn, is that after it is gone or?
    Thanks.

Dude, I once got two inch high blisters on my shoulder from being out in the sun while peeling from a previous sun burn and they got nasty and puss filled too. NOTHING, not vitamin E, aloe vera, NOTHING prevents the scars.

My blisters arn't quite that big.I wasn't worried 100% about scars, I just want the damage repaired as soon as possible. I don't want this sunburn lingering for days on end. I just feel the longer its there the more damage it will do, plus I'd like to be able to wear my nice colared shirts instead of my walmart ones.

Those big flat clear plastic bandages from the drug store work good. They seal around the edges good. Just clean off the areas where you have put lotion so that it will stick.

Careful with that though, make sure the center of the bandage allows for plenty of air to hit the blistered spots. It will dry them out faster and allow the healing process to continue.
