Peter butt, ok, if it goes to 70 and you listen at 40 you are at 1:00, so a bit over half, I said generally around 11:00 so your pushing it but not outrageously so, in your set-up can you switch to a relative scale?? My Oinker can do that, maybe yours cant, no matter its just a scale. Do you have any idea what SPL you are hitting?? So since we now know your pushing it, you now have some basis for deciding if you want a more powerful unit rather that just wondering, flapping your arms like a chicken outside on the walk, or driving in circles following the ice cream truck, see your getting it, you make decisions based on the direction you need to go, I would get a meter and check what SPL the speakers are hitting with the movies you like going boom boom, or bullets whizzing, airplanes zooming and so on. As you say though with music you are at 11:00, so as you can see the recording level of the software makes a difference, even certain DVD have differences, many have a 3-6 db bump for the center channel built in, lots of little tricks.

I would get a test tone disc and run some sweeps to see if the room has nulls or bumps of certain frequencies, of course I do live in a Rabbit Hole am a bit of an Audio Geek, so keep that in mind, have you read about the THX standards??? For your size room a piece rated as THX select would be good, the better gear usually does not bother with paying Lucas the fee for the rating but for the lesser gear its not a bad idea to get something certified, you can read about it, also Polk as informaion on this site, or just give them a call and ask them, cool folks always willing to help out a customer with good advice. Basically the rating guarantees a certain SPL within a given amount of cubic space, although the certifciation has branched out for money fees and you see things like dry=wall being THX certified and so on, dont get hung up on it, just know about it.

Now you can see in my signature I have some B&K gear for Reel Time Theater, this is good stuff, also Anthem, Parasound, NAD, Sunfire just to name a few if you want to look at them and drool a bit, but read what they say about the gear, the transformers used, the discreet ciruitry, types of resistors, gain control circuit, oh hell, it goes on and on.

But if you dig the hobby then you find the chase, the anticipation, the coveting and finally the acquisition of a piece all part of the fun. Now you want the RTi line.....RT means Reference Theater and that is what you dig, you made a good choice and never let anybody tell you different as they do not know what they are talking about.

edit--one other nice thing about the z-breeze is it will run for 15 minutes or so after you turn the gear off to dissiapate the heat, you set these on top of the piece of gear you are cooling, some folks do use the pc fans, build your own, but i like this little piece, I got mine on the cheap from our flea market, you can look for used ones on Audiogon.

    RT1,

It's not the weekend yet!!...Haven't made it to radio shack for the SPL meter. Maybe tomorrow if the little lady will let me spend a couple of bucks on a "Necessity". She runs the show not me!

    Test tone disc....recommend one please!
"I think i would learn how to swim if you threw me into the deep end daddy" *Sploosh*.....
"Look son, i can't make out what you are gurgling but, thats called flailing....almost like treading water!!"

If i don't get right down into it, i'll never learn and then it will fall to the wayside like riding a unicycle......and potty training:D

Back to brass tacks...so you have finally hinted around the fact that i might be pushing one piece to hard and that the 606 isn't going to be "good enough". This is where we need to be! On a side note, i looked up some of your gear and i have to admit, i can barely read so it was all pictures for me and they looked nice. All i know is i looked up dollar figures and i concluded that you are either a rocket scientist or a p*rn star...nobody should be able to afford gear like that. I'm over here asking about getting a newer/used $500 receiver. ;)

I know AVR's are all personal preference but i'm taking baby steps here. There are all kinds of 807's for just over $500 used...does this make sense. For my applications, should i look at just the 707. I figure they are going to start dropping in price as the new 708's, and 808's start maturing out of infancy and becoming more mainstream. Advice?

    SPL tomorrow....GOING FOR IT!...don't rush me :p

hehehehehe, we all started somewhere, dont get to hung up on the cost of gear, you can have a great system without spending a fortune, yea, I know the retail on my stuff is crazy, but I got most of it used, which is usually at least half off and sometimes a third of msrp. Although I got the speakers new from Polk and these in-walls rock, but not for everyone.

So google Avia HT set up disc or Digital Video Essentials for a couple of set up dics but there are lots of them, I am just familiar with those two, there was another one in my OppO box but cant remember the name right now.

    Happy Saturday Everyone!....Even you RT1 :D

No i haven't gone out yet...its only 10am and i have to mow the lawn!!

Here is today's question. When listening in Stereo 2.1, listening around 35-40 via ipod, is it going to be a problem if i want to drive it harder to say 45-50? Does 2.1 put less stress on the receiver? Can we kick it? The reason i ask is because we would like to BBQ on the deck this afternoon and want to be able to listen to some tunes while doing so. 35-40 is good when in the living room, but not on the deck. I have directed the speakers towards the slider as well for directional support.

I have it connected with a 3.5 to RCA adapter sending it through the CD input.

You can try it, but make sure that you check the heat on the receiver. If it gets too hot or if things start sounding strained or funny turn it down.

Quite frankly, you would be better off just getting a boombox that you can hook up you ipod to, rather than putting your gear at risk.

dont blast the thing to distortion (clipping) so you can hear it at the deck.

well your going to have to get the dreaded manual and read it for your unit, the Zone two though does have connections for speaker connection it has too or it would not be there, your going to have run speaker wire from the unit out to the BBQ or wherever you want your speakers, then you set the machine to zone 2 and walla bita banga you get music on the BBQ.

    Have fun.

No i haven't bought the SPL Meter yet....apparently we haven't needed to head ANYWHERE near a Radio Shack in the past 2 weeks!
BUT, I just came across this @ Amazon.com and wondering if this is the deal i've been looking for?

Marantz SR7002 Receiver on sale for $599

    http://www.amazon.com/Marantz-SR7002-Surround-Receiver/dp/B000X14W4G/ref=sr_1_1?m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&s=aht&ie=UTF8&qid=1280146069&sr=1-1

I haven't been able to look up more specs on it as i AM AT WORK!!....is this what I and many others have been waiting for?!? Do i need to pull the trigger on this, and then sell my Onk606!?! When they say true power "With THX Select2 certification and 110 watts of continuous power per channel (yes, 110 watts from each of its seven current-feedback amplifiers!)"

It appears to have EVERYTHING i could possibly ever need and it doesn't break the budget!!....Little Help Here.....should i post this in the DEAL's of the Week Section?!? I don't want to miss out on this if i don't have to. :D

mrbiron, not exactly sure what you are looking for, but that is a nice step up over the 606. You will be gaining some power, just not a real lot. Even though that model is a couple years old that is a very attractive price for NIB. I would check on warranty if that is important to you. Not sure how important the video side of things are to you but I would see its lack of upconversion as the only weak point. You gain some more (but probably better) power, pre-outs, THX (not huge but IMHO note worthy) and other features you may or may not need/want. While I have not heard a Marantz in a number of years, I always liked their sound, which I think would match up with the RTiA's a little better.

    Thanks APPHD

What my main issue with the 606 is that i have to be very conservative about what i do due to its lack of quality power with 5 channels driven. I stay on the soft of the volume dial and really wanted to get as much out of the speakers as i could while staying on a budget.

Since i still haven't looked up the specs, can the receiver at least pass through 1080 because i have Blu-ray on the other end so i don't need the upconversion. The video is very important as i am a huge movie buff but, also need the audio for the tunes!

I just figured i could get one hell of an upgrade over the 606 with enough room to grow.

Is ear bleeding performance too much to ask for? :D:D

Yes it can pass through 1080P. Ear bleeding performance may not come with this AVR, but I still think it would be a very nice improvement over the 606 at a really good price. I'm surprised no one else has commented on this AVR, usually can not be found at this much of a discount new. It is an older model but I think it has all you need. If you need more power at least it has the ability to add an external amp, then you should be able to reach the hearing loss you are looking for:D

Now that i've finally been released for an overnight stay with my couch, i've been doing some quick research on the SR7002. It seems like it was quite the titan a couple years back but may (just from general comparisons) lack some of the key features that the newer rigs can offer. The main reason i brought it up was the name, $$, and overall power...... mainly the $$

I think i may turn a blind eye to it and watch as it slower becomes extinct like having cash in the pocket.

    Thoughts?.....different AVR in suggestion?:confused::confused:

Thats comforting....i clicked on the link yesterday afternoon and it sent me to the receiver but only showed 1 place to buy new for 1,300.

Will i be missing anything by buying this older receiver? Are there newer features, especially with blu-ray and hi def audio that i need to consider?. This is why i turned to the guru's for assistance on this one. It won't be bad if i pull the trigger because i can turn around and sell my Onk on CL for a quick 150 and recoup some of my losses but, is there a better newer receiver out there for $600?
But there's lots of deals if your willing to put the time in.
I can put the time in, that's not the issue. The issue is while i'm putting time in, papers keep stacking up on my desk and the boss keeps giving me the hairy eyeball. I should really rethink about posting on here during a work day :D

    >>>>>> SPL Meter on order!!!!!
It won't be in until next week. I will then consult the "BRAINS" ie....you knowledgeable people on how to adjust from there.

As far as the receiver....I think i have decided to save some money for now and look towards the holiday season for some off the wall deal that forces me to pull my wallet out.

    or

My brother told me i could barter with him for a Yamaha that he has but i won't know what it is until the weekend. If its quality and he's running a HTIB off of it i will make the swap.
