The evolution of HDMI

I can't stand this technology. So many variations and modulations; it's ridiculous. There are some fascinating changes coming soon though...

Early next year, HDMI will be incorporating Ethernet transmission through their cables. This requires a specific HDMI cable (a couple of pins are rearranged or something), and I believe they are directional. HOWEVER, this will allow an entire system to be networked by a single internet-accessing unit.

For example: If you have a PS3 connected to WiFi, and running to your receiver via HDMI-Ethernet, every capable device connected to the AVR (including the receiver) will have network connectivity. Kind of cool?

On the negative side... Component video is nearing extinction. As of Mar 2011, devices will be required by the FCC to restrict video output via component to 480i. That's right... a SD analog signal. This goes right along with HDMI's effort to take over the world, and screw over the consumer.

As interesting as it is to learn about the latest/greatest in the industry, I'm ready for THAT area to standardize and give us a break for once.

    Preach on Brother Dane.

Hopefully the report I read is true, that a few major electronics companies are pushing for yet another new standard. HDBaseT uses ethernet, which should have been used all along instead of HDMI.

    http://www.electronista.com/articles/09/12/15/lg.samsung.sony.and.valens.found.hdbaset/

In the mean time, I'll keep all my old gear that passes 1080i over component, just in case. Maybe someday, it will sink in to the movie studios, that no matter what they come up with to deny copies, copies WILL be made. (SACD has yet to be cracked though, go figure)

I kind of look at HDMI as the 'one cable to rule them all' evolution of digital cables. So it really depends on how much you really want all your digital connections to go through one cable, how much you want to chase all the iterations. DVI seemed to handle video just fine. Then they put different types of audio in the cable with some slightly upgraded video in hdmi 1.1-1.3. Now comes ethernet, 3-D, and an audio return channel in 1.4.

Yes, the anti-piracy stuff is annoying. But you can still get pretty far on HDMI 1.1 and analog audio outs depending on your legacy equipment. Basically everything but 3-D.

I do just fine with 1.1 for video and love my analog. I run optical for my HD DVR and my pre/pro handles DD. So no problems here.

Not going to chase this BS, because that's what they want you to do.

I'm well aware of DenonLink... was poking fun at their overpriced Cat5 cable offered a few years back. It was quad-shielded, well-packaged, perhaps a special "audiophile" cable... but still well overpriced at $500.
I believe they sold about a dozen on Amazon... so explain to me how it received so many reviews there???

HDMI sucks ****. I hate it with a passion. The distance factor is killing the industry. HDMI over cat 5 or cat 6 sucks ****.

Using RGBHV with a baul in works but also sucks ****.

    HDMI sucks ****.

I have no way to explain anything on Amazon as I have never looked at the site. I also never knew about the 500.00 Cat5 cable Denon tried to sell. I have used the Denonlink and it to is a very well shielded cat5 cable with rj45 ends. I think it's crap that they are making the manufactures put the kabosh on component cables due to piracy concerns as some people just do not upgrade as fast as the manufactures like ...I'm one of them

I will say, I favor the Cat5 plans versus HDMI. As it sits, Cat5 has never needed cable modifications. It would be a much better, universal solution. PoE is already being implimented in some applications, with good results. The plastic ends are a bit concerning, but no more so than HDMI's loose connection!

So with all this stuff in our houses connected to the internet, how long before we get viruses to brick our components?

There are actually already reports of firmware updates in the Avatar BluRay disk that are restricting the component outs to 480i:mad::mad:

Well Dane I do know they make rj45's that are metal my Denonlink is that way and our IT folks at work only use the metal ends. So if it goes that way hopefully it will be metal ends.

I also see this as a BIG future problem as well. I for one do not want any of my stuff integrated into my Internet connection. The only time my gear well be connected is to get a firmware update period...
