This was apparently published in Feb or Mar of this year. Jan Didden is a big contributor over at DIY audio and this is probably one of the more interesting and fact filled audio interviews I've read.

The real scoop about the Adcom and Nakamichi/Nelson Pass collaboration as well as some interesting education about simple audio circuits and some other revelations I never knew about. The most fascinating is Nelson's work to to restore/update the electronics in the Ortofon cutting head at Mobile Fidelity in 1991. Absolutely fascinating!!!

Thoroughly enjoyable read if you are at all interested in this hobby, if for nothing more than to hear him talk about the cutting head project at MoFi.

"Appreciation of audio is a completely subjective human experience. Measurements can provide a measure of insight, but are no substitute for human judgment. Why are we looking to reduce a subjective experience to objective criteria anyway? The subtleties of music and audio reproduction are for those who appreciate it. Differentiation by numbers is for those who do not".--Nelson Pass Pass Labs XA25 | EE Avant Pre | EE Mini Max Supreme DAC | MIT Shotgun S1 | Pangea AC14SE MKII | Legend L600 | BlueSound Node 3 - Tubes add soul!

Good article.. thanks for posting. Interesting how he talks of the differences in sound of MOSFETs vs bipolars and how "minimal or no feedback, low-order harmonic characteristic" is more important than low distortion numbers. I like his emphasis on subjective experience versus reductionist measurements.

    Thanks H9.

This is the first article I have read where NP talks so freely about his design work with Adcom. In other articles in other publications, he has seemed somewhat reticent to discuss his work for Adcom. There was even some speculation that NP had some type of falling out with Adcom. I am glad he dispelled that speculation in this article.

Very interesting reading. I'll admit, I didn't get everything...but I liked Mr. Pass's attitude of trying to speak to the ordinary person..with a bit of technical jargon and circuitry thrown in. It also helped explain, to me, the preference people have for the GFA-5800s over the 555s, etc. And it provided some pretty cool pics of Pass....Steve Jobs eat your heart out...this guy's got the jeans, the shirts, but also the hair and a full beard. Takes me back to my own past even though I would assume that Nelson's got me by a decade, there is a lot that is familiar. Looks like a nice guy to hang with as well!
