911 on the cell phone

I haven't had a cell phone in years and I don't want one. I keep getting the "what if there's an emergency" argument from my family. Finally the little light bulb came on above my head. I retrieved the old Samsung cell phone I had from the closet, installed and charged the battery and turned it on. Surprisingly it gave me the correct time and date. I dialed 911 and voila, they answered.
There ya go, my emergency cell phone will now sit in the glove box with the only number that works.

I guess people forget we never had cell phones in the 60's,70's and 80's. How did we ever survive without a cell phone. I don't know about you guys but I still got my drugs, and still got laid..

Don't forget about those who are of low income and/or has disability.
Btw, for those who still has a home phone, check your phone bills and your calling pattern....you may be able to cut your home phone bill in half simply by calling your phone company.
I hope no one have to ever use 911 service. My one (and hopefully only) experience of calling 911 from home resulted in a fire engine, a police car, and an ambulance showing up within a couple of minutes. Because I was calling from home, the 911 operator automatically knew where I was (as opposed to calling from a cell phone) even though I was completely distraught. Having a home phone just gives me a "peace of mind". -

I was wondering the same thing. If you will it, dude, it is no dream. -
Don't have one, don't need one, don't want one. If someone wants to talk to me they can call me at home. If I want to talk to someone I'll call them from home.
As far as emergencies go. . . if I'm on the road I'll flag down a cop and ask them to call AAA for me.
Oh yeah, I forgot, just for emergenicies, if I am go on a long ride, one hour or more from home, I'll take my wife's cell with me in case the beater has a problem. I even hate that she has a cell phone although she gets 1500 minutes a month for $48. I see that $48 dollars as a waste as we could use it for something we need.
Other than that no cell phone. -

Is that for real? No bill, I just told them I was testing the phone.

I don't know about Canada but I've mistakenly hit the 911 speed button on my home phone several times and never was charged. The police came out a couple of times to check to make sure I wasn't beating my wife or that anything was wrong but never got charged. -

Yep, I see that cell phone money going out the door like we're flushing it down the toilet and with our finances as they are now, I keep bugging my wife to get rid of it. Her response always is that if she gets rid of it, she'll never get the deal she has with Tmobile again. My response to that is, "who cares" we need the money for food! WTF they just don't think like we do! Tmobile will always be there and knowing my crafty wife she can get any deal she wants. -

Well in my case, it is NOT a money issue and it is not a question of being old school. I could win a million dollar lottery and I still wouldn't get a cell phone.
I seem to have developed a very big dislike (read hate) for ringing phones. It could be from hearing the phone ring at work endlessly day in and day out over the years. Add to that the rudeness of people talking on their cell while they are at the service counter giving you their information (I now walk away and do something else till they get off the phone) and friends that place their phone on the table in front of them at a restaurant so they don't miss a call (they've learned not to do that anymore with me btw).
There are so many examples of this social "rudeness" that people have become immune to it. I find it ridiculous that at a family gathering there are numerous cell phones scattered about the dining table like cutlery.
I hate when the phone rings at home too. Inevitably, it will ring while I'm watching a movie and somehow, someway, it ALWAYS manages to ring if I lie down on the couch for that rare nap. Oh, and I nearly forgot, it never fails to ring when I go do my thing in the bathroom.
Oddly enough, I am both ridiculed and praised for not having a cell phone.
One thing for sure, I don't miss having one just as I don't miss having cable t.v. in the house (and no, that is not a money thing either).

911 speed button? For those times when 2 extras buttons would take too long!! -

Joe the only reason why I got a cellphone back in the late 90s was so my Mom could always reach me in an emergency. It does come in very handy when on the road.
Only my family & very close friends have my number. The only time I turn it on is when I am on the road traveling. But I always have it with me cause you just never know.
But the most important thing is I DON'T have a monthly bill. I changed over to T-Mobile & bought their cheapest phone for like $50.00 got a $30.00 rebate on it & got pay as you go. I bought a $100.00 sim card for it, and so long as I go in before it expires in 1 year, I renew it for $10.00 once a year.
So a cellphone doesn't have to be a huge monthly bill for you. Just a one time initial purchase of the phone & card then $10. thereafter.
A part of me would like to update my phone to get one with keyboard but I would have to pay full price for one & the damn things are expensive. So I'll just keep what I have.
So get off your butt & get your own phone & stop depriving your wife of her's because what if you have it & SHE has an emergency & needs the phone. Or is she confined to the house whenever you are out?
It's just good to have one just in case.

Let's see I don't need a cell phone because I have a telephone lan line at home so because I don't want to talk on the phone in the car or in a restaurant or any other public place because I feel it is rude or can't be bothered when I'm at private functions I'm a [caveman]. I can't stand when I'm having lunch or dinner with my older son whom I see infrequently and his cell is constantly ringing, texts are coming across every minute etc interupting out conversation etc. Hell we were at the ball game last week and he must have gotten 20+ calls and texts while there. I was sitting back enjoying the game and the storm. The only reason I was happy he had that phone was it had a camera on it and he captured shot of the storm on it. How about when you are out at a restaurant the creeps at the tables adjacent to you aren't aren't have pleasant conversation with each other, they are all on cell phones having completely separate conversations with other people. What kind of way is that to sit and enjoy a meal with your wife or your friends or your buddies?
What does my post count have to do with not wanting/needing/having a cell phone and expressing my opinion about it and its extra cost in these tight budget days!?!
I had to carry a cell phone for many, many years and beepers for my job and I hated every second of it. Like I said, you want to talk to me, call me on my home phone, I want to talk to you, I'll call you.
Geez, talking about not liking cell phones has become akin to calling ones baby ugly!
Hey you want me to have a cell phone so bad buy me one pay the minutes each month, I'll be glad to take your generousity.;) -
So get off your butt & get your own phone & stop depriving your wife of her's because what if you have it & SHE has an emergency & needs the phone. Or is she confined to the house whenever you are out?
Um NO! . . . and how on the very rare occasion when I have to drive a long distance am I depriving her and keeping her from the need of a phone or an emergency call when I have a phone system in my home that I pay for a hell of lot less than we pay for the cell phone monthly? By the way we only have one running car and that's a beater so, yes, she is confined to the as am I when one of us needs to use it, plus we have to be very careful with it because if it breaks down or one of us gets in an accident we are screwed in that we can't afford to buy not even another beater.
This all doesn't make sense to me.
Hey why not break my stones to get a music server instead of the stone age TT that I love so much!
You folks love your cell phones and all the gizmos that come with it! More power to you. I've lived without one for years and years except for work and I'm doing just fine with out it. Hell TMobile offers my wife a free phone for me on an almost monthly basis with reduced rates on minutes. I don't want it, I don't need it . . .period! Is that so hard to understand? -
My cell phone has bose speakers...I love hearing it ring. I also upgraded the charger to much higher quality wire...the sound quality of incoming calls has much more width and depth, its almost like they're in the room talking to me...amazing!
