Making Gasoline Disappear

As if it isn't easy enough to go through a semi-tanker of gas in a month with 6 drivers, 5 cars, 1 dirt bike, a golf cart and 8-1/2 acres of lawn to mow . . .

. . . my youngest daughter is dating a scumbag!

I've noticed fuel input input versus miles driven haven't been matching up in the car my youngest drives to her boyfriend's about once a week since he's home from college this summer.

The family situation there is horrible and I won't go into it, but it's an unemployed single mother with 2 sons/worst home in a nice neighborhood scenario.

The car has a fuel door that opens from inside, but it's been pried open and I found numerous scratch marks on the paint around it.

I talked to the nice neighbors in the area and they confirmed they've seen the boys filling the mom's car out of a plastic 5 gallon gas can on several occasions.

I guess I'll have to pick up a locking gas cap.

Yep, and I always try to keep the tank full because Dads worry about their daughters like that.

I guess he figured I wouldn't notice 4 or 5 gallons gone missing per week, but fuel computers have a strange way of flagging that kind of thing.

I just found out the younger brother was caught siphoning from his neighbor's lawn tractor. I guess the young one is doing the siphoning after dark when he's sure my daughter is inside watching a movie with the older brother and mom.

Um...yeah, if that was my daughter she wouldn't be dating him anymore.

You need to give your number to those neighbors and have them call you. Or if theyre really nice, see if you can get them to video tape it.

She's the youngest of three. From experience, the harder you push one way, the harder they push the other. It will work itself out if history repeats as it did with the first two who are now dating guys I consider worthy to be sons. I just hate to be funding this particular part of the education, but a locking cap should do the trick.

The neighbors never see the siphoning part, they just confirm they have seen the boys filling the Mom's car from a red plastic gas container during daylight hours.

Agreed, I'd find some sneaky way to get my daughter away from that dirt ASAP.

Can't you also tamper with the car and install a contact that would trigger the horn as soon as the gaz door is open (unless of course disabled from the inside of the car)? You make your daugther deosn't know about it. If she comes home telling you some weird happened with her car you'd know eactly what happened. Even better, install a triggered camera and once this happens show to her who is the guilty beast

She's good about not taking advantage of "free" use of a vehicle, but you are right; if it was her $3 per gallon gas in the tank, I'm sure she would confront him about the situation or stop driving there.

I always tell him the shotgun's loaded in the basement every time he comes over.

As far as "punk guy", I'm still working out (6'2" 220) and have decent amount of muscle mass, but he's going to school on a football scholarship and almost my size with 30+ fewer years of wear and tear on him.

Find his Moms car and if she does not have a key fob for the car (if it is fairly old) Take some round tooth picks and push them in all the key holes on the car, do not forget the trunk. Break them off. When she goes to put her key in the lock, the toothpick will mushroom and she will need to replace that lock. Evil I know, but I am from near Detroit, Mich.

Why not tape a note on the inside of your gas cap door warning the MFer's to leave your gas alone and that you know where they live?

If you're SURE it's the boyfriend, try this scenario:

" Say, BF .... let's have a talk. Have you been siphoning gas from my vehicle ? "

    (PROBABLE ANSWER)

    "No !! No way !! "

"Well, I gave you an opportunity to man up, but here's the deal:
I'm sure you're stealing gas from me.
Doesn't matter if you are or aren't, I think you are.
    Therefore you got 2 choices:

    1. If you're wanting gas in order to see my daughter, you can work for it.
Every week you're home from college and want to see my daughter using
your MOM'S car, you can come over and mow my grass.
In return, I'll put a full tank of gas in your MOM'S car so that you can
    come visit my daughter HERE.
    OR
    2. Get out of Dodge.

Those are your two choices. Which will it be ?"

If he accepts, than it shows he's hard-working, willing to do what is necessary to visit your daughter in an honorable way.
If he gripes and groans, tries to tell YOU how it's going to be ("Hey, man, you can't stop me from seeing your daughter") , than repeat your previous speech.

From my skewed vantage point, I'd suggest emphasizing the "MOM'S car" thing.
If he's a decent young man, he'll be embarrassed but ..... he'll go for the grass thing.
If he's a punk, he'll get ticked off, get huffy, and possibly attempt some physical "persuasion".

That'd be worth the price of admission if it allows your daughter to see this guy as he apparently is.

Main thing is: stay cool and have some fun.

P.S. You have my sympathies working with a teenage daughter.
