Scary scenario in Gulf...

I think the general theory is that the more dispersed the oil becomes, the less of an impact it has. Spill a gallon in your kitchen and it's quite a mess; spray a gallon over an acre, not such a big deal.

Yeah, but this kitchen spill is the size of a few states. Plus it forms balls of tar, which will be anything but easy to get out of tree's. Unless you wait for the hot sun to hit it then watch it ooze onto your house or car. It'll be very interesting to see how this plays out.HT SYSTEM-

Space lasers.
That'll do it.
LMAO!!!!
Im more worried about space lasers than a giant methane bubble popping and killing us all. Doomsayers like this dont worry me too much. Now you get a bunch of scientists warning of this, Ill raise and eyebrow. Until then, Ill keep my tin foil laser repelling hat handy.polkaudio sound quality competitor since 2005

Pretty interesting, IMO.

Yes, it's is interesting... Strange how it changes shape so drastically from day to day.

I saw some cool monster images in that presentation.
After viewing, the first thing that came to mind was how big it grew, and the lack of urgency from day one from all involved.HT SYSTEM-

Yeah, the Gulf Oil Monster. It'll ruin your life...
I just don't get it. I know it's a hard problem, but come on, they say the hole is the size of a dinner plate. You'd think they could drive some kind of expandable plug into it. The pressure must be enormous. -

Yeah... it is rather odd that the oceans are everchanging like that, isn't it?:pThe Gear... Tens of thousands of gallons of oil through a hole the size of a dinner plate sounds like the equivalent of forcing the output of a full pressure fire hose through a syringe. I cannot help but thing the trillions of tons of water pressing down on the sea floor is only adding to the pressure. The Gear... it's not adding to the pressure, it's helping to restrict the flow. Just think how much would be spewing if it did not have the pressure of the ocean in top of it. Why can't they just put a pipe down there and collect the oil???? I know it wouldn't be easy( think of connecting two garden hose together with the water running). And why do they keep stopping the clean up effort? I know there are risks, but that is why these people make the big bucks.

Because essentially the leak CAN'T be stopped. This is more than just a pipeline...it's an entire underseabed oil pool...it's not just a straight line around the pipe. Stop the flow of oil, and the back pressure on the pipe is going to intensify a LOT...which is going to cause pressure in the well to build up. This is going to cause fissures to open up even more, and essentially burst...then the oil will simply be pumping out of the sea floor and be even less contained than it is now.
They've already tried to plug the pipe using a topkill method by pumping huge amounts of mud into the pipe. Fact is, mankind doesn't have the technology to pump it in there fast enough to efficiently create a plug.
If it was as simple as putting a plug on the pipe, it would have already been stopped. Unfortunately, it isn't anywhere near that simple.mrbigbluelight wrote: »"This animation of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill was created using actual overflight information and forecast models from the NOAA and Unified Command."
