That card should have an SPDIF out. Use that.

Talked to him about that earlier, some technical difficulties. So I suggested he try out a USB cable from pc to DAC. It's the way I do it with my Decco and it sounds great :)

    I know right?

and yeah my sound card is dumb and doesn't have a "true" digital out. so I would have to use the analog out. I haven't tried the USB to the DAC as I wasn't sure how that all worked but will on Sunday when I get back from el wedding.

You'll need an ASIO driver and if the USB input on the dac is not asyncronous it will pass fan noise and other computer noise through to your system.

Computer based systems do sound just as good as a regular component but extreme care and some knowledge is needed to get the connections right. It's not simple if you don;t know how to do it.

yep and thats been my problem doing this one. I really didn't know how to do it, nor could I find resources to explain it so I'm trying to learn as I go. Originally I wanted to just run digital out from the sound card to the DAC and use it that way. Now its either I have to get a different sound card so I can use the digital out on there or USB connection. not sure which way would be the best to go.

If the usb input is not asyncronous then I'd just get a new inexpensive sound card that outputs straight digital. Now there are some pitfalls there as well based on which operating system you are using. The default is Windows K-mixer which, for lack of a better term "pre-mixes" the signal before final output. You don't want that, you want a direct unadulterated digital signal. You need to set your output to Kernal streaming. It's different for Windows XP, Vista and 7.

I wish I could walk you through it but I had help several years ago and have forgotten where, what the setting are for Windows XP. Have no idea with Vista or Windows 7.

Good luck and don;t pull your hair out.

Don't give up on the sound card just yet- they're a little wonky, but if you've got the driver installed, there's a software switch that changes the output over to digital and you'll need a cable to break out the minijack to an RCA. It's been awhile since I've messed with a soundblaster of that era, but it's possible (just a pain).

...and you'll still want to bypass the windows mixer.

If i remember correctly, winamp used to make most of that pretty easy once you got the sound card figured out.

I'm currently using Itunes because I load everything into iphone and ipod and makes it easier. CD's get imported as lossless then played through itunes. used to use winamp but just annoying have mutiple thing to listen to music.

like I said just want it as simple as possible.
