And that would be the case with the pair of Polk SDA 1's that I just picked up on freecycle.
When I got them home, I set them down and the stands immediately crushed under the weight of the speakers, apparently they had gotten wet and molded and could no longer take the weight, The cabinets were not damaged though.
Alright, so now my speakers don't have stands, but that's okay, I'll build new ones.
So I wired them up to the Carver in my garage, Upon hookup I note a couple things, there is only a fuse in the Stereo HF section on both speakers, but not in the Dimensional HF and there are no caps to put a fuse into for the dimensionals. Also, I don't have an interconnect cable. (whatever that is?)
When I turn the Carver on, I noticed that the Left channel only has one tweet working (the one on the right) and the right channel doesn't have either of the tweeters working. I pulled the other three tweeters and tested them where the right tweeter works on the left channel and all but one worked.
I pulled the stereo HF fuse and put it in the dimensional spot on the right channel but that didn't solve any of the problem.
After all this, I disassembled the speakers and found that someone has definitely been inside them tinkering around. On the back of all the midrange drivers, there is something that looks like stickytak, It's very sticky and has been put all over the baskets. It also looks as if whoever worked on them stuffed a wine cork in one of the chamber holes at the top of each speaker.
When I removed the back board to make sure that everything was hooked up, I found that it looks like someone had tried to repair something at one point. I don't know much about speaker repair so I'm not sure what they were trying to fix, but it doesn't look like they did a very good job.
So my questions are: How do I go about finding a new tweeter. What does the InterConnect cable do? Is it necessary? How do I repair whatever was done to these speakers? (get the tweeters working) How are the innards of these monsters supposed to be wired up?
I've got a friend with a pair of SDA's that are a little bit different than these and they sound great. I don't have much experience with polk equipment other than the center and rear channels in my surround setup, and about the only repair I've ever had to do on a speaker is get a new horn for one of my Klipsch KG4's.
I've posted some pictures of these here: http://picasaweb.google.com/kissmyash933/POLKSDA102#
Thanks in advance for your help!

1) New tweeters direct from polk are $50 each, shipped. I believe the replacement for the SL1000 is the RDO-194. (I may be wrong here.) I would recommend looking for another SL1000 on eBay, as replacing all four is going to be $200.
2) The interconnect cable enables the SDA effect, which uses the dimensional arrays to cancel out inter-aural feedback.
3) No clue on fixing the drivers. I'd say try to get that gunk off there... How to do that, not sure.
4) Wiring diagrams can be found in a sticky in the Vintage Speaker forum here on CP.
Good luck.
EDIT: And just a heads up, in the end, the most cost effective course of action may be to "part out" the speakers. If it ever comes to that, it looks like you have MW6600X's as your midwoofers. -
Thanks, John!
I'm working on cleaning them up, and a friend of mine is going to come over later and take a look at the crossovers with me!
