Had these babies on the stove for 3:45 and they are yum. Nice and salty but not over done. I always buy these when I'm out in S.C. from peanut shacks and they are delicious. Today I went and bought two bags of raw peanuts and decided to serve some up myself. I'll let them boil for another hour or so, refrigerate them and eat them cold. They are outstanding and taste great when drinking a cold brew. You guys in South should know about these.

WHhatt? Those ain't bowl'd p-nuts! You have to buy bowl'd p-nuts from a roadside farmer stand. Fresh out of the pot. I like mine warm.

As a Yankee transplant, I thought they were nasty at first, but those were from eating bad examples. When I finally had them fresh, it was a whole different story. They are wondrous hangover food too. That warm salty juice helps replenish your electrolytes ;)

Associating the things that come in a can to real, freshly boiled green peanuts is like calling a Big Mac a t-bone steak. Valencia or Virginia varieties (the smaller ones with red skins), straight out of the ground (or at least from the farmer's market), brought home and boiled up fresh, are a staple around my house. Had a plateful for lunch yesterday.

Any peanuts advertised as "Jumbo" (such as the ones in the can) are not green peanuts, and are generally mushy, with the predominant flavor being the dirt they are grown in. Avoid them.

And trying to convert haters is a waste of time. Forgive them, Mr. Carver, they know not what they do.

    Exactly!

I'm with billbillw, as an Iowan gone south (pun intended) I wasn't sure what to make of boiled peanuts at first.
Done right, I love 'em. I too stop at the curb stands on the country roads/highways and usually I am not disappointed. Them 'ol farmers know what they are doing. :)

Boiled peanuts. Never could get in to them. Must be a southern thing.

Then again, some transplanted southerners I know think that "soy nuts" are nasty. All they are are roasted soy beans.

They're not too hard to make on your own. I made some today, and bagged them up in zip locks afterward. As mentioned earlier if you can get to a farmers market and buy some raw peanuts you can do it on your own. I made about half lb today and they were outstanding. I just got done eating some and watching a movie. As I said before you can't go wrong with a cold brew in hand. It's like they were meant for each other.

What's the "true south"? Because a large chunk of NJ falls south of the Mason-Dixon line but because of that little bend around Delaware, it's not "southern". But if the line went through NJ, it'd go right through my town. Half of it would be Union, half would be Confederate.

I had a great aunt who was of southern heritage who used to grow a large garden full of peanuts on her farm in IA just so she could have good bow'ld peanuts! I don't remember what variety of peanut she raised, but it had to be a certain variety to be good IIRC.

never heard of them but want to try them....and I know how you feel Ben, WI tends to ahve a lot of people also think they are living in the South but you know, with snow and crap and they don't seem to figure that one out very well.

and that no you are not a cowboy just because you dress like one and have never ridden a horse....just because you have the hat doesn't mean crap (a lot of people in WI think its cool to dress like one but never got on a horse in their life or even know what a rodeo is)

hopefully soon. Probably in July sometime is what I was thinkin'.

and horseradish cheese, ok, shouldn't be a problem....

and yeah just love all the kids in High school that drive around in their trucks that haven't seen an ounce of mud even though they are lifted with the confederate flags flying, man I sure don't miss high school....

and found some of these suckers online seeing I guess there isn't a walmart that has boiled peanuts within a 50 mile radius of me, otherwise I might have ot go visit some friends in TX....

Boiled peanuts taste like dirt. BUT, if you are ever driving thru GA., stop at one of those joints off the highway that sells fresh peanuts...they are awesome....
