Can someone explain to me why projector screens cost how much they do? I dont understand how coated vinyl can command such a price tag. I am basing this off of projector people's pricing for Da-Lite and Draper screens, is there a source/manufacturer that has reasonable prices? Has anyone done a side by side with an expensive screen and one of those they put in every public school classroom for overhead projectors? What gives here?

P.T. Barnum said it best....

You can get great results from a DIY screen! -
Screen material is very very important.
Really there is only one great screen company and every other brand is second rate.
Stewart filmscreens cost alot because they are the worlds best. They are in almost all movie theaters,THX,Disney, etc.
You have to pay for quality.
Buy a cheap screen and you will not see exaclty what your projector is capible of doing. The screen is just as important as the projector itself.Harmony my man......what high end you gotta pay high end.
Fixed screens are much cheap er them motorized. You might want to consider a fixed........Dan
My personal quest is to save to world of bad audio, one thread at a time. -
Exactly what Mantis said, sometimes for certain projectors matched correctly it makes all the difference in the world.
But if you research front projector forum sites you can do DYI screens for under a hundred bucks and the results can be amazing. I personally bought a Da-Lite $100 screen and painted it for $40. It works very well improving my blacks, color and contrast. When I go to a 15 to 20 foot screen i will be painting/finishing a wall.
