    NIEMI SAID NO!!

I'll be at game 5 for sure unless the hawks sweep:D. It's looking real good that I'll be at game 2 and there's talk of a road trip to Philly for game 4. Game 1 I'll be at my step-brother's weddiing :( who get's married Memorial Day weekend?

I was at game 4 in '92 I was 13 and definitely didn't appreciate what my Dad was taking me too. Just glad I can return the favor now and take him to a game or 2.

Been rooting for Philly since 72 and not going to jump ship now! Even stuck with them though the Cooper-all days! :)

That does put a damper on the otherwise triumphant 72 series.:(

You missed some incredible hockey players Mike! Yeah you had your
Wayne Gretzky's, Mario Lemieux's, and Mark Messier's but Bobby Orr, Rocket Richard, Jean Beliveau, Phil Esposito, Bobby Clarke, Guy Lafleur and others of their ilk just had more competition and talent against them than did the three I mentioned.

I'm leaving out a whole slew of other's but you get my point.

I think we all think that the players from our youth were the greatest. You are right though in that when I think of great players I think of the players from my youth...Lemieux, Gretzky, Kuri, Bossy, Coffee, Hawerchuck, Yzerman, and yes even Lafleur (I still remember)..etc., etc.

I am sure the 10 year olds now will think that todays stars (although stats don't compare) were the greatest 20 years from now.

Having said this the game is soooo different today that I am not sure a lot of those players that you mentioned or I mentioned would be all that successful today...as it is a totally different game. The skills aren't as apparent today because there simply isn't the room for them to be showcased. It is more of a congested game of dump and chase ....however much better than it was just a few years ago.

Is there room for a Denis Savard or a Phil Howsley in todays game?

Anyone not familiar with them can youtube them..I am sure they are there.

    Mike

I forgot to mention Paul Coffee, the young Paul Coffee among the greats and yes Denis Savard can be added there too, I don't know about Howsley but you are right about todays game. I'll tell you what really IMHO screwed up hockey was when I believe the Devils came up with the "trap!" Oye Vey what a boring way to play hockey.

As far as the "dump and chase" goes I always felt that to be an exciting way to play the game. The "dump and chase" goes way back.

Phil Howsley was a very talented offensive D man,Savard was a magician and don't forget one of the most underrated players of that era,50 goal scorer Steve Larmer.

Housley was an important part of Selanne's record breaking season back in Winnipeg. What's the closest anyone has gotten to it since?

I don't think anyone has come close to that many goals period let alone a rookie (I think it was 76, crazy!). I might be wrong someone coulda got close in mid 90's but no one has lately, thats for sure.

    Go Hawks! ;)

Its funny, years ago when the Flyers were so bad we used to call this the "dump and quit."

Alexi Zhamnov was a HUGE reason that Selanne got as many goals as well. He was one of the most skilled players I had ever seen and demanded attention from opponents. Unfortunately, he didn't have the desire to play hard on most nights or he could have been a big star in the league as well. I always thought he had way more skills than Selanne but not the desire. Some of his goals were oh so pretty. He once had a 5 goal night in LA.

The Jets were never an elite team (okay maybe one year,...damn oilers) but they were fun to watch.

Joe, I could not agree with you more that the New Jersey Devils winning the cup was the worst thing for hockey in the recent era. They just killed the game to the point that I could not even watch it. This was this reason that I stated in another thread that I thought Pittsburgh winning the cup again would be good for the game. Whenever, a team is successful all the others like to copy their style.
