Sorry if I offend anybody...I'm a novice. Can someone explain bi-wired? and bi-amped? I can understand that it means two wires and two amps, but how is it done? why is it done? Advantages? Disadvantages?
Thanks for the help.
Steve

Okay, I'll tackle this one:
Biwired: There are two pairs of wires going from the amplifier to each speaker, on for High Freqs, and one for Lows. They are separated the entire time, except at the very back of the amp, where they're both connected to the same post. Theoretically, the reduces the interaction of bass/treble frequencies in the wire, and each one then has better seperation and transparency.
BiAmped (passively): You now run a Y-Splitter from your pre-amp out put to a two channel amp for each speaker. Thus it's like bi-wiring but instead of the Highs and lows each getting their own wire, the each have their own amp. Supposedly one step farther than biWiring.
BiAmped (actively): The same as Passive, but the Crossover in the speaker is removed, and an active crossover is put between the pre-amp and each amp. The purpose of this is so each amp only has to amplify a very limited range, and can devote more power to where it needs, thus taking the "specializing" approach of the three methods to the highest level.
Advantage: varing amounts of better sound
Disadvantage: HUGE hassle (especially for active BiAmping), and the latter two require a bigger budget. -
Thanks Guitarhead. I guess that is a future project for me...limited budget right now.Rti70's

One thing I should add- It can only be done if your speakers have two pairs of binding posts, ie. RTi70 & CSi40, It cannot be done if you speaker has only one set ie. RTi38 & RTi28. On a limited budget, it's not too hard to try bi-wiring, but bi-amping is sorta out of the question. I've personally tried bi-wiring, and I didn't notice a significant difference, but other people in the forum have tried it and liked it.
And Welcome to the forum! -
Im currently using bi wire to my Lsi speakes. Yes it did make a noticible improvement. One wire out of the reciver & splits into two pairs at the speaker one for high pass & one for the low pass.
here is a pic of my center speaker bi wired
Im using Monster Cable Z2 bi wire speaker cable. You can see the one wire split to pairs just before the speaker. If you do bi wire or bi amp remember you need to remove the jumpers between the speaker terminals. hope this helps! -
Good lookin pic........Dan
